25.01.2022 The Mater Intellectual Disability and Autism Service (MIDAS) clinic has recently celebrated its 2nd anniversary as a Mater Service. The MIDAS Clinic is a state-wide service which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of adults with intellectual and neurodevelopmental disabilities through clinical practice, education and research. 24.01.2022 Congratulations to Mater’s Arabic Interpreter Hazar from the Language Services team, who has just successfully obtained her qualification as a Certified Interpreter from NAATI (National Accreditation Authority for Translator and Interpreters) after sitting for a highly challenging test. Certified Interpreter is the second highest qualification under NAATI’S current certification system. Hazar’s inspiring achievement not only demonstrates her dedication as Mater’s in-house Arabic interpreter, it is also a perfect example of how Mater’s Language Services team constantly strive to provide the best quality interpreting services and support for patients with diverse linguistic backgrounds throughout their health journey.

23.01.2022 Respiratory and Sleep Physician Associate Professor Lucy Burr and Neurologist Dr Daniel Schweitzer are collaborating with other leading Australian researchers on a clinical trial using a Queensland University of Technology (QUT) developed light therapy to target cells in the eye aimed to delay the motor function decline of people with Parkinson’s Disease. Treating and supporting people who have cancer is a truly phenomenal job and there are so many different roles which play a fundamental part of the journey. 23.01.2022 There was a pitter-patter of little feet around Mater's South Brisbane campus last week... The staff and children at Mater Early Learning celebrated the Big Walk for Little Steps in an effort to promote physical activity! Dressed in colours of the rainbow, the children followed picture clues around the early learning centre to complete a walking course and at the end each class received a certificate for taking part.

22.01.2022 Meet Clinical Midwife Rachel from Mater Mothers’ Hospital, who has played an integral role in helping families welcome children through the #COVID19 pandemic. Rachel and the team of midwives have gone above and beyond to support families during such a difficult and uncertain time. She said the pandemic has created anxiety for many parents who have been concerned for their newborn babies. She said the midwifery team has been providing additional support to families to help them through and said while this time has been difficult the parents have handled it with amazing resilience and strength.



22.01.2022 Following the destructive storms which made their way through the Springfield community recently, Mater Private Hospital Springfield Manager Support Services Chrishan Perera reached out to the YMCA Springfield Lakes Community Centre to offer support and to see if there was anything the site could do to help the community. Early this week the team delivered trays of sandwiches and cakes to the centre and were overwhelmed not only be the gratitude of the staff, but by the huge support that they have been providing the community by way of food, insurance claims and assisting with grant applications and housing.

22.01.2022 Time to meet another of #Mater’s standout teams as this week we are recognising the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for their ongoing efforts throughout our response to #COVID19. Whilst adapting to caring for critically ill COVID-19 patients and maintaining maximum protection for staff, the #ICU team set up a rapid plan to get ready for a potential influx of severe COVID-19 cases requiring intensive care. Preparing for the worst saw the department ready to expand into new spaces,... nearly double bed numbers and stockpile equipment and supplies to greatly increase capacity, as well as rapidly upskill staff and provide specialised training to staff from other departments to be ready for redeployment to ICU if needed. Director of Mater’s Intensive Care Services, Nai An Lai said the department had always worked as a team, but doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and support staff across ICU working so closely has been one of the best outcomes throughout COVID-19. Whilst we are physically apart and socially distanced, emotionally, we have never been closer as a team.

22.01.2022 Today is #WorldClinicalTrialsDay which seeks to recognise the doctors, nurses and scientists who conduct clinical trials and thank them for the significant impact they have on improving public health for generations to come. Mater Gastroenterologist Dr Yoon-Kyo An explains how important clinical trials are to informing new medical therapies and promotes the work of the of the inflammatory bowel disease clinical trials unit which she leads. The recipients included Gary Mackaway who was presented with an award in recognition of his 40 years of service by Mater CEO Dr Peter Steer and Mater Board Executive Chair Francis Sullivan AO. 21.01.2022 Our celebrations for National Volunteer Week (NVW) continue as we recognise Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers. From Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd May 2021, NVW will celebrate the significant contribution of Australia’s almost six million volunteers who selflessly dedicate over 600 million hours to help others each year. Meet the wonderful volunteers Robert and Judith from Mater Private Hospital Redland who dedicate hours of their time to helping patients. One of the most important roles our volunteers have been helping with over the past year has been screening patients and visitors into the hospital from our Volunteer Information Desks.

20.01.2022 Across Mater the organisation recognises the outstanding contribution volunteers make to our ministries however, behind these volunteers lies an equally dedicated group of Mater people who are responsible for the coordination, support, training, administration and recruitment of our volunteers. 19.01.2022 Children from Mater Early Learning have been celebrating #NAIDOCWeek with a range of different activities put together by the centre’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Project team. Activities involve children learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture is through natural play using items they have found in their communities like leaves, bark, rocks and more. It is important to us at Mater Early Learning to have Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander per...spectives embedded into the service and programming everyday but they especially love to celebrate NAIDOC week. NAIDOC week is a great week for Educators and Teachers to plan learning and activities for the children to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements. As the next generation it is so valuable for our children to gain understanding and knowledge of our First Nations People and how important their culture and history is.

19.01.2022 Every year, #Mater receives breast care cushions and drainage bags from the volunteers at Zonta Brisbane East for women and men who have undergone breast surgery. In recognition of #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth this October, patient Andrea Stark pictured here with Nurse Alana, shared the difference these specialised support resources have made to her journey with breast cancer so far. The fact that volunteers have sat down and made something for somebody like me is just gorge...ous. The pillows give me extra comfort and the drain bag makes me feel more confident to go out it looks like a beautiful made accessory, Andrea said. Mater is grateful to all the #Zonta Clubs who volunteer their time to make these resources, bringing that little bit of extra comfort to patients undergoing breast surgery. 19.01.2022 Adding to our awareness celebrations, #FootHealthWeek runs from 12-18 October with this years’ theme of, ‘Get Back on Track - Fit feet for a better YOU’ which seeks to highlight how podiatrists help those who are inactive or limited by pain, get back to movement. Mater Podiatrists Amy Jones and Prue Haslett work in the High-Risk Foot Clinic at the Queensland Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic (QDEC) with diabetes patients who have diabetic foot disease helping to get them back on track. 17.01.2022 You would never think how debilitating a hand injury could be until it happens to you. Our hands play an integral role in our lives as a quarter of the motor cortex in the human brain is devoted to controlling the muscles of the hands. The Occupational Therapy department at Mater Hospital has a dedicated Hand Clinic designed to help patients recover from hand injury or illness impacting their hands while improving overall hand function and helping them get back to their daily tasks. Oncology Nurse Deb Harrison explains pancreatic cancer can be difficult to detect due to the location of the pancreas in the body and the fact the symptoms can be varied and subtle. 14.01.2022 10 May 2021 marks 160 Years since Mater’s founding Sisters of Mercy first landed on Queensland shores from Ireland. Under Mother Mary Vincent Whitty’s guidance, the founding Sisters not only established a Mater presence in Brisbane in South East Queensland 160 years ago, but in Rockhampton in Central Queensland and in Townsville in North Queensland. The pioneering endeavours of Mother Whitty and the Sisters of Mercy evolved into the Mater Mission and services that guide and inspire Mater to this day. Mater can all be very grateful for their wonderful grit, devotion and example.

13.01.2022 Each year we celebrate #PerioperativeNursesWeek which runs from 4 till 10 October presenting an opportunity look back on the last year at the contribution our perioperative nurses have made to our hospital. This year has presented our perioperative nursing team with a challenging and changing environment which they have handled exceptionally well. Earlier this year when elective surgery was reinstated our teams did an amazing job to ensure the backlog surgeries were completed. 13.01.2022 Last week the Occupational Therapy team at Mater Private Hospital Redland celebrated #OccupationalTherapyWeek by demonstrating to staff members and visitors various activities and therapies they do with their patients to help them #rebuild, #recover and #reengage in their health journey and promote the positive impact of occupational therapy in our communities.

13.01.2022 The team from the Mater Cancer Care Centre in South Brisbane, have recently been thanked for their outstanding care of a gentleman with intellectual disabilities who has also been battling cancer. His family have thanked the team for going above and beyond in his care ensuring he had the same staff to treat him at each appointment, making his environment as soothing and calming as possible and incorporating his favourite toys, songs and games into the day to make treatment less stressful. They have praised the collaborative efforts from the oncology doctors, nursing staff, occupational therapists, social workers, catering teams and in home nursing support who worked together to make this all possible. The family shared their heartfelt thanks with the team and is a wonderful example of how our teams support their patients.

12.01.2022 As Australia heads into winter, it’s important not to become complacent with your sun smart behaviour. In Queensland, the UV index measures above a 3 almost every single day, meaning the amount of UV is enough to cause skin damage quickly. This means that sun protection should be used every day of the year. Professor Brian Gabrielli of the Mater Research is an expert on skin cancer and said in addition to sun smart behaviour you should get regular skin checks by your doctor ...and ensure you watch your partners and loved one’s skin for unusual spots or changes to their skin. We meet Gina, who was diagnosed with melanoma in her early 20’s who shows us how skin cancer doesn’t discriminate but thanks to the work of Brian and his medical research team she has responded well to her treatment. 12.01.2022 On #InternationalNursesDay we meet Tilana Van Deventer who has worked as the Nurse Unit Manager of Perioperative Services at Mater Private Hospital Springfield for nearly three years. Tilana shared she wasn't always interested in nursing but as soon as she walked into a theatre she was hooked with a special love of obstetrics, gynaecological and plastics procedures. 09.01.2022 Today is #WorldAIDSDay and we are looking back to the actions of the Sisters of Mercy who offered their care to those in need throughout the 1980s HIV/AIDS pandemic. In a public statement they said ‘the Sisters of Mercy wish to offer compassionate, non-judgemental support to those who need it. 08.01.2022 Aspiring healthcare worker and #MaterEducation student, Tanita is balancing senior high school, study, casual work and sporting commitments, but has made time to give back to the community throughout the challenges of the pandemic. Inspired by speaking to her own grandparents, Tanita has this year launched a program to create and write greeting cards for the elderly who may be quarantined, and suffering from loneliness during COVID-19. 08.01.2022 Meet Leigh from the Mater at Home Dietetics team, she provides individualised nutrition care to Mater patients once they have left hospital where she supports them with their treatment and recovery all in the comfort of their own home. Leigh works closely with the Mater Breast Care Nurses supporting breast cancer survivors prior to them undergoing breast reconstruction surgery ensuring they are in optimal health before their operation. 07.01.2022 The #Mater family in Townsville recently came together with locals to celebrate one of the original Sisters of Mercy, Sr Catherine Cuddihy for her 45-year commitment to the communityknown as one of Townsville's greats. In celebrating her retirement, Mater Health Regional Executive Director Gerard Wyvill said Sr Catherine is a much-loved and well-respected member of the Mater family. Sr Catherine epitomises our Mater Mission and Values, with her love and compassion for ou...r Ministry something that she will be forever recognised for, Mr Wyvill said. Not only is Sr Catherine an unsung hero across our hospital for her countless hours of generous work over 45 years’ of service at Mater, but she is also an inspiration to the entire community of Northern Queensland for her unwavering commitment to generosity, selflessness and unconditional care." Now looking back on her years as she celebrates stepping into retirement, Sr Catherine stands at 75 years’ of age just as the Mater in Townsville stands for its 75th year too! 04.01.2022 Meet Mater’s Language Services team, comprised of two dedicated coordinators and eight qualified interpreters who provide in-house interpreter services in Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Persian (Farsi) or Dari, the most commonly requested languages. Language Services Manager Ling Ling Holloway said having interpreters on site means she and her team can build a rapport with their patients and support them throughout their medical journey. 04.01.2022 Two highly specialised medical departments have come together at the Mater Queensland Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic (QDEC) to improve and streamline care for patients impacted by very rare and serious medical conditions. Teams working in Metabolic Diseases and Neurology departments have collaborated in a new clinic responding to an increasing number of referrals for patients with mitochondrial and other disorders affecting both metabolic and neurological systems. 02.01.2022 Mater Early Learning Centre are ensuring the next generation grow up with a sustainable, future-focused mindset! The team have recently become one of only five early learning centres across Brisbane to join Brisbane City Council's Waste Smart Kindy programan initiative encouraging early learning centres or services to make changes to increase resource recovery and decrease the amount of waste being sent to landfill. Children and staff from the centre were officially inducted... into the program by Councillor Kim Marx and awarded a compost bin for the centre, along with educational books relating to waste, recycling and sustainability. 02.01.2022 #GlobalHandwashingDay (Oct 15) serves as a yearly reminder that #handwashing with soap and water is one of the best steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to othersand amid the ongoing #COVID19 pandemic, this year has reminded us all that handwashing is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of a virus and keep us all safe. Mater’s Director of Infectious Diseases, Dr Paul Griffin said he hopes thorough handwashing becomes a lasting habit well ...beyond COVID-19 and gave his top three reminders on effective handwashing. - Always aim to use warm or hot water over cold, having your hands covered in this water for at least 1 minute as this provides the best chance of killing unwanted germs. - The most important times to hand wash are after using the bathroom, before and after preparing or eating food, after sneezing, coughing or using a tissue, and, before and after having close contact with someone. - When in doubt, carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you to use frequently during the times you may not have access to soap and water. The very first patients were welcomed into Mater Mothers' and the first baby born on February 2nd 1961fifty years to the day after the first patients were cared for at the Mater Public Hospital. 01.01.2022 A highly-specialised team of researchers from #MaterResearch have begun clinical trials to find a first-of-its-kind vaccine for a deadly respiratory virus, most dangerous in babies. As the first group in Australia and only second across the world to commence research of this type, researchers are aiming to provide a maternal vaccine for the Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV as it is commonly knownwhich currently has no treatment or vaccine and is considered the second biggest killer to malaria for infectious disease-related deaths in infants under one year.
