25.01.2022 Serbian folklore. "Once upon a time people thought that humans have four stages, just like mother earth, that has four seasons. The stages were about aging so the stage 1, childhood was about being a kid. Today everyone wants to be young and beautiful And that it lasts forever. The world is full of fake smiling, full of makeup faces, painted graves, And the opposite of that is Babaroga. She is a forever old granny with a horn on her forehead. She is a creature that is fine w...ith being old, a creature that doesn't want to be young. The child of The Big Baba, a sinister god-like creature, whom people called Granny to prevent it from getting angry and killing them all. Behind Baba the only things left are names of places and plants, toponyms, and the most precious of them all, Babaroga. Babaroga is old, like grandmas usually are, and she's ugly. She has a loooooooong biiig hook-like nose, no teeth, a hump on her back, giant ears, and, like I said earlier, a big horn on her forehead. That's why her name is Babaroga (Serbian for horn granny) She never shows up when the sun is up, so her main time is night. And that's when she comes for children. The only alive relative of Babaroga is her sister from Russia Baba Jaga Baba Jaga lives a bit better than her sister who's home is a cave, she lives in a house with chicken legs. Baba Yaga's eyes hurt a lot, and she gets even more pain when she thinks about her poor sister in Serbia. They love each other, like every sisters, and they get in a fight only when figuring out who is older. Babaroga visits kids at night. But she doesn't eat them like parents say. She covers them with blankets, helps the nightmares go away. If the child wakes up she looks at them evily and says a loud BU! Or a BA!, scares the child. She knows that it's better for children to be afraid of her than of the world that awaits. Babaroga is modest and humble. In some countries they call her Babaruga." See more

09.01.2022 Last night I added some more detail to this mural at our local daycare.

09.01.2022 At the end of this article there seems to be some guesswork about why faeries are akin to bread. In many cultures there are ancient rituals and mythologies around fertility , the harvest and bread baking and breaking. Well before the ideas of communion or built up civilization, there were faerie / nature harmonious ceremonies for fertilizing the fields. Gifting the fae with your bounty is an offering to ensure their assistance with more healthy harvests. ... If ye feare to be affrighted, When ye are (by chance) benighted, In your pocket for a trust Carrie nothing but a Crust: For that holy piece of Bread, Charmes the danger, and the dread.
