16.01.2022 Thank you to Swan River Dressage for organising the Gala Dressage on the weekend at Brookleigh Outdoors. It was fantastic to have FEI Judge, FEI rider & EA Level 2 Coach Kerrie Swan-Bates travel over give us all such helpful feedback, I was thrilled that the highest score Max was awarded in his 2 Medium Tests was Kerrie's score of 67.5%. Congratulations to the riders who achieved PBs over the weekend, especially Abby Ross & Melissa Atwell. Thank you to the organisers, Steward...s, writers & other volunteers who made the weekend possible. It's always valuable to take horses like Max to new venues where there are lots of things to look at, this was a good training opportunity for him. Max was very lucky to win one of Lorraine Atwell's beautiful bespoke cushions (see pic) - a really special prize which I will treasure! Thank you Lorraine & Mel Melissa Atwell for all the work that went into these gorgeous hand made prizes!

14.01.2022 Thank you to Ryan Ball for taking some lovely shots in early March at the last event Max, John & I are likely to go to for quite some time. My test was very forgettable, but I did learn a valuable lesson - I learnt I should not try to ride a test at 7.15am Saturday morning after a busy week finishing work late on Friday then trying to prepare for a show. The most memorable part was my warm down! Thanks for your help strapping #Lauren Ball & can I recommend people to go to Ryan’s website to see his amazing photos - Ryan’s Astro and Action Photography

11.01.2022 Hartpury Festival of Dressage was just as fantastic as always, super team of judges and officials for the week, then to cap it off, the International Dressage Officials' Club arranged a visit to Carl Hester's yard the day after - a huge thank you to Suzie Hoevenaars, Isobel Wessels & Maria Schwennesen for this amazing opportunity. As you would expect, everything at Carl's is picture postcard perfect - beautiful gardens, fields, stables - in a word, horse heaven. It was an eno...rmous privilege to watch Charlotte riding a stunning 5 year old first, then Valegro, while Carl talked about his training philosophy and many facets of dressage in his usual wonderful effervescent, humorous, enthusiastic & positive way. Charlotte told us whenever she needs a lift, she rides Blueberry, she said he is so lovely to ride, he always gives her a pick up! Charlotte had not ridden Valegro for 6 weeks, (Carl said 'the kids ride him' meaning the 3 younger people who ride there for Carl have the opportunity to develop their riding skills) but Charlotte & Valegro were still brilliant together all the same - their work included doing some gorgeous half passes, piaffe, passage & transitions in & out, & lots of stunning one time changes on a 20m circle! It was the day after a huge week at Hartpury CDI for everyone at Carl's, but everything was immaculate - what an incredible team they are! I am enormously grateful to Carl, Charlotte, Alan & the rest of their team for making themselves available when I am sure they really would have preferred to have a quiet day. Everyone from IDOC really appreciated having this fabulous visit! Thank you! #WendyBarker

02.01.2022 Riding the stretchy trot circle The EA Rules say: ‘as the neck stretches forward and downwards, the mouth should reach more or less to the horizontal line corresponding with the point of the shoulder.’ (p. 27, 2020). His nose should come slightly in front of the vertical. This is just the right amount of stretch to require a horse to lift his back and use his core muscles while still maintaining his longitudinal balance. Balance, meaning he will keep approximately 50% of his... weight balanced on his hind legs and 50% on his front legs. You are asked to show stretching on a long rein on a 20metre circle in the current EA Preliminary 1B, 1C & in all three of the EA Novice Level Tests. This movement has been included in these tests because stretching is good for all horses, just as it is for human athletes. It is always worth double marks. The coefficient is there to reward combinations who can demonstrate relaxation, suppleness, a consistent elastic contact with the rider’s hand, obedience & balance. In other words - 'throughness’.
