25.01.2022 RECYCLING IN CoPP During the pandemic the council have notice a quarter of the yellow bins have things they shouldn't have in there. There have definitely been other priorities lately, but if you do want to double check what should and shouldnt be in your yellow bin, you can check by clicking on the link below. To help improve the quality of your recycling, from this month, you may see Council Officers checking what materials are in your yellow bin and leaving tags to remind you if there’s something in there that shouldn’t be. And if you’re doing it right, they’ll reward you with the chance to enter a monthly prize draw to win a voucher!

We would really like to support a local artist and so are asking any local singers out there, professional or not, to apply for the position. Great banter in between songs is encouraged. You wi...ll be required to record the event yourself and we will place it on our Youtube page for Seniors to access on the event date. We will pay the performer $400 for the final recorded piece that will only be used for the Seniors Week Event. Please reach out to anyone you think might be feeling alone, start a conversation with a stranger while waiting for your coffee, or smile at your neighbour you have never spoken too. 18.01.2022 Vladimir from our English class is sharing his experience during Covid in Melbourne. MY LIFE DURING COVID-19 by Vladimir The pandemic essentially changed our mode of living. Different restrictions have prevented us from meeting friends and gathering people together. Nobody can predict when it will stop.... Now I only connect now with my friends and colleagues online with ZOOM. I belong to 5 Russian-speaking clubs and associations, so we have meetings online every weekdays. Moreover, I was invited to attend meetings, organized by the Consulate, the City of Port Phillip and the City of Glen Eira. Four days ago, for the first time in 5 months, I was invited to a restaurant because my friend was celebrating his birthday. More than 40 guests came to celebrate this event with him. The City of Glen Eira posts me regular health messages and I can join the Glen Eira online events. One event was with Nicole Jenkins who guided us through the history and impact of British royal wedding gowns over the last 170 years. Their Home Library Service brings books and other materials right to my front door. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Consulate could not celebrate traditional Carers’ Week together in person this year. However the City of Glen Eira has been offering a range of online activities. I can do exercises in the morning using my hands to improve their range of movement and strength. All exercises can be done sitting in a chair. It is also very important for me to go for a walk every day. Now some restrictions have been further reduced. For example; we don’t need a reason s to leave home and we can travel any distance, but people should work from if they can. Face coverings are mandatory indoors, unless an exemption applies. Face masks must be worn in settings such as on public transport, including when waiting at stations, in care facilities and in shops. Up to 50 people can gather outdoors from any number of households. Face masks are still recommended when physical distancing cannot be maintained. I hope all restrictions will be cancelled in the next 3-4 month, and we will be able to return to the activities that we were doing before the pandemic.

18.01.2022 What a perfect day to have an English class in the garden! We sure did miss seeing these happy faces in person.

18.01.2022 WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING IN LOCKDOWN by Amandine from our English Classes During the lockdown, I have been focussed on how our community can continue to consume local and organic fruit and vegetables. Organic fruit and vegetables are hard to find in normal times, but even harder during lockdown. I have spent some of my spare time working on this question. ... Firstly, the fresh fruit and veggie markets arent in the same place each week so they are hard to find or to reach. Fortunately, I have found that there are local producers, seasonal products and also organic products available near me. I prefer not to buy my fruit and vegetables from the supermarket. The supermarket notices say proudly grown in Australia, which is great, but Australia is a very large country and we often ignore where the produce is coming from. Also, organic products from the supermarket are over wrapped which is bad for the environment. We have the same problem in France. In June, I wrote to the Glen Eira Sustainability Service to try to explain what I think we could do to promote locally grown organic produce, but I am still waiting for their reply. I have been in Melbourne for 9 months and I realize I havent been able to get to know my neighbours, especially now with Covid, so I tested my idea with them and I searched for a farmer who would like to deliver to us. I introduced them to my idea of delivering all the veggie boxes to the same address. This would create some friendly chat time when each person picks up their box at home. Each week I continue to send a message to families in my area to share the blog link with the vegetable selection. At the same time, I started sharing bunches of oregano cut from my garden. I wrote a kind message which I hung on my front garden fence along with the bunches of free oregano. It was a success and I received great feedback from one of my neighbours, so I did that again with some quarters of cabbage. So now you can see how I spend my spare time trying to get to know my neighbours during lockdown and share my love of organic fruit and vegetables with them.

15.01.2022 Hello everyone, I'm Victoria. I work as a computer tutor at ESNLC and deliver computer classes for non-English speaking students. Several years ago, at the Centre, we developed an EAL Desktop computers course and started our first class for the Russian-speaking community. It has helped immensely for members of our community aged over 60 to learn information technology in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere in their native language. Currently, I run several online classes and the a...udience has increased to 50 people. During the lockdown, I hosted a series of free Zoom webinars for the Russian-speaking community across Melbourne and one-to-one support to help seniors feel more confident in their devices and technology and I taught them how to use Zoom. My work and volunteer experience have always been associated with teaching and began in 1998 in Ukraine. For 12 years I was a lecturer at Kharkiv National University of Radioelectronics delivering software design and data analysis courses to university students. Then I moved to Australia following my husband. I volunteered as a tutor in the Biostatistics module of the distance learning system for the non-profit Peoples-uni. Being a stay-at-home mum for my two boys for over 7 years I felt that I needed to update my skills and I did a Certificate IV in TAA to become a trainer in Australia. I love teaching and it brings me great pleasure to share my skills with other people. My motto is - the more you give, the more you get. That's why in my spare time voluntarily I do mentoring, tutoring, research, and supervise students, and I participate in startups, I teach high school students in maths, adults in computers, and I teach Russian as a second language. It is more than helping with homework or taking tests. It's about empowering people and changing lives. This is what I do. I am currently volunteering as a Volunteer coordinator and Computer trainer for several non-profit organizations in Melbourne. Being a volunteer helps you create a positive impression, makes you more innovative and creative and gives you a range of useful skills. During my stay-at-home time, I actively developed my hobby - making beaded jewellery. Just before lockdown I organized a jewellery-making group at the Centre and believe we will continue it as soon as we return to the Centre. I like working for a community house because it gives me the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself and use my skills and knowledge to assist in the empowerment of people across the area where I live. 13.01.2022 Our English class are dreaming of the end of the pandemic. Please dream along with us! MY DREAM HOLIDAY IN THAILAND by Jazz I am very happy that the government has unlocked lockdown. Now I am able to travel around Victoria. My husband asked me where I would like to go for a holiday. I told him that I would like to go to Thailand. He said that would be OK, so here is my dream holiday in Thailand.... When I arrive in Thailand, I will see my son and I would like to meet up with my granddaughters. They live in Bangkok. The older one’s name is Valentin, because she was born on Valentine’s Day. She is 13 years old. Valentin is beautiful, just like me! My second granddaughter’s name is Maysa. She is 11 years old. Maysa likes to cook like me! I want to take them to Rayong beach. Rayong is a tourist city with a beach. Rayong has delicious seafood and very good restaurants along the beach. We stay at the Amornphan resort. After that we will go back to Bangkok and I will take them shopping for anything they want! After that, I will meet my sister in Saraburi. My sister has a lovely family. She has a son called Kafue. He is 16 years old. I will stay with her family for 10 days. My sister’s area has waterfalls and a forest that is so beautiful. After that, I will meet my friend in Prachin Buri. Her name is Lek. She is my best friend. We are planning to travel together to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai by van. We will be in the north of Thailand for about 7 days. After that, we will travel to the eastern part of Thailand to Ubon Ratchathani. Ubon Ratchathani is a province along the Mekong River that separates Thailand and Laos. We will sit and have dinner at a restaurant on the Mekong River. The restaurants here have a delicious fish menu and they serve papaya salad. After that, we will travel around Ubon Ratchathani for another 7 days before we go back to Prachin Buri. At the end of my trip, I will go back home to Bangkok and meet up with my relatives. I have an uncle and aunt who I would like to see. I will come back to Australia after about one month in Thailand. I hope my travel dreams will come true and when I return to Australia I really hope I will not be detained for 14 days in hotel quarantine. Thank you very much for listening to my dreams.

13.01.2022 This term our English class dreamed of their perfect holiday. Please dream along with us! MY DREAM HOLIDAY: Adventures in Australia by Kate Today is a wonderful day. 12.01.2022 HELLO SPRING LOCKDOWN by Sky from our English Classes I still remember when the SARS epidemic happened in China over 17 years ago. At the time, as a result of doing my work well, I was rewarded with two tickets to travel to China; one ticket for me and the other for my mum. Unfortunately, we couldnt go because of the SARS epidemic. Instead, my Thai company paid compensation to its employees, including me. Last December, while I was living in Melbourne, I heard the news about... the Coronavirus outbreak in China that quickly spread worldwide. My travel plans were interrupted again. I couldnt go to visit my close friends in Sydney, Brisbane or New Zealand and I couldnt go back to Thailand to visit my family. I felt really disappointed . No matter what happens, I must be strong and remain positive. The cold winter has passed and now spring has arrived. I look at nature to show me the way. The grass is green on the hill, I can breathe the scent of nice fresh air and I can feel the breeze touch my skin, which makes me very happy. When the warm sun comes out, little camellias come into bloom. We have glimpses of warmer weather, there are flowers blooming, bees buzzing, and birds chirping and with lockdown almost over (I hope), we can start to enjoy the excellent weather. I have a lot of activities to do; cooking, dancing, singing, watching TV, reading books, exercising, talking, and meeting with friends on Zoom. My husband and I love dancing and singing together and we both have a sense of humour. I have noticed that my husband has been eating too much chocolate. I said to him, I worry about you, please dont eat it too much. I tried to hide it, but he found it, so I had to find another way to stop him eating it. I wrapped elastic bands around the block to make it more difficult to get the chocolate out. It was successful! Now he only eats two pieces of chocolate a day.

12.01.2022 WOMENS HEALTH WEEK FREE YOGA CLASSES Hi all, This is Pat Plum here. Prior to Covid, I was teaching Deep Relaxation classes at Elwood St Kilda Neighbourhood Learning Centre. And this week I will be offering two free online classes for women, as part of Womens Health Week. These classes involve no physical poses or movement (and videos can be left on or off). 10.01.2022 Our English class ended the year by dreaming of their perfect holiday. Please dream along with us! MY DREAM TRIP BY JUNE Hi everyone. Today I would like to talk about my dream trip.... There is a place where I’ve always wanted to visit abroad. This place is Key West in the USA. Key West is an island in the state of Florida. It is about 6km long and 3km wide, located 145km from the mainland of Florida. Key West was also home to Ernest Hemingway, a famous American author. Key West and the mainland are connected by the Seven Mile Bridge. The Seven Mile Bridge is used in many movies but is mostly famous for the explosion scene in the movie True Rise. From personal experience, my husband and I had planned to go on a trip to Key West for our honeymoon. We decided on this location because I had watched a beautiful sunset from Key West on TV, which intrigued me and made me want to visit there. In order to get there, my husband and I flew from Japan, all the way to New York. My plan was for us to visit New York first, then fly to Miami and drive to Key West. We enjoyed New York - we saw the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, the Metropolitan Museum and many other places. On the morning of our departure to Key West, I was watching a program on TV. The program talked about a hurricane that was happening in the area of Key West. They showed traffic jams on the Seven Mile Bridge, which was the result of many people attempting to escape from Key West to the mainland. However, at that time, my English skills were much worse so I didn’t know when the hurricane had happened, thinking the TV program was just a documentary. I asked my husband This program is talking about a hurricane, when did it happen? He answered, Now! My husband called the hotel in Key West, and they told us that the hotel was closed due to the disaster. I was extremely disappointed, because we had to make Plan B. Since our honeymoon, I still haven’t had a chance to visit Key West, however it is still my dream trip location. I definitely want to go there someday with my husband or the whole family.

09.01.2022 LIFE IN LOCKDOWN with Vivien Atkins "At the first whiff of Coronavirus (a student returning from holidays in Wuhan!) I wondered whether I should buy some more hand sanitiser. So, off to the supermarket I go and what did I discover empty shelves, NO toilet paper or flour! Surely we didnt need to panic. As the first lockdown approached I spent a lot of time making sure my 93 year old Mum was okay. We didnt want her going out, so shopping was organised and plenty of books bo...rrowed from the library. I too, managed to get to the library the day before lockdown and stocked up. I enjoyed the first lockdown the slower pace of life where, instead of rushing around everywhere, we walked around the local area every day and met so many neighbours that we hadnt seen before. It was a very friendly time, lots of meet and greet with good physical distancing. There were rainbows on footpaths and teddy bears in windows. Zoom has allowed me to continue teaching and keep some routine at home. It was a steep learning curve but worth it just to see how happy the students were to see each other again. Weve met children, partners and pets and coped with wonky internet connections. Its been great for keeping spirits up. Along with the decluttering and some extra baking, my big project during this Covid pandemic has been knitting. I have knitted a baby pram blanket for my great niece who arrived in June. Luckily, we got to meet her the day before the second lockdown! The second lockdown has been more difficult. The news is grim, the weather is colder and theres so much uncertainty about the future. I decided to ration how much news I watch. I also decided to support my local bookshop and buy a few books now that the library is shut. So, book group continues on Zoom, I have a take-away coffee to support my favourite barista and Im making sure that I get my 1-hour of exercise every day at the park where the dogs and kids are having fun."

09.01.2022 I love our community! A kind person has taken the time to thank their hardworking essential postie for delivering all of their letters to their grandma during restrictions. They even included a packet of lollies.

08.01.2022 Our Beautiful Community People have been doing small acts of kindness that make a very big difference to others. Sam has left out bunches of flowers for people to take to brighten their day.

08.01.2022 DAYS OF LOCKDOWN by Kate from our English classes This is a hard time for Victorians, particularly families. We cant travel, eat out in restaurants or go far away from our residence, which has changed peoples normal lives. Fortunately, my husband is staying in Australia with us during this time. Stage 4 restrictions are being enforced due to the increasing number of new virus cases. I have mixed feelings, both anxious and nervous. Staying at home means we have more spare ti...me. One day, the weather was nice, there was no wind and it was warm. I dragged my husband downstairs to walk around Albert Park Lake. We met our neighbour outside the lift. He was going running along St Kilda beach, because he said his belly has too much sugar in it and he found he couldnt tie his belt because he has stayed at home for such a long time. We laughed and said we had the same problem. I saw a flock of birds standing up on some wood in the water when we walked around the lake. They kept the same distance from each other which looked like social distancing. How amazing! Now Stage 4 has begun. My son has to stay home and do remote education. Im busier than before. I get up early to make breakfast for the family, join English class on Mondays, learn new words and do exercises every day. I enjoy doing exercise because it always fixes feelings of sadness and boredom. It gives me strength and makes me happier. One thing I should do is keep this going, and then I will have more happiness.

06.01.2022 Hi I’m Sue! I’ve been in my role of Volunteer Coordinator at ESNLC since February this year. Having grown up in country Victoria, service to others and community support has been embedded in my dna, and volunteering has long been part of my life. I’ve worked in volunteer program management in various not for profit organisations for over ten years. I absolutely love working with volunteers and supporting the unique energy they bring to the programs they’re involved in. ESNLC is a very warm, friendly, inclusive place to work. It’s a wonderful blend of passionate staff, community members - and animals - coming together to support needs of the local community. I’m enjoying being part of this team and contributing to the vibrant neighbourhood of Elwood.

06.01.2022 Today is World Statistics Day! Here are some stats that make us happy.

06.01.2022 Our English class are dreaming of a post covid life. Please dream along with us! MY DREAM HOLIDAY PLAN by Amandine Today, I would like to share my 2020 dream holiday plans with you. A project of this magnitude is a unique opportunity to get away from it all.... First, I think we need to do a checklist because after spending more than a hundred days in lockdown, we have all forgotten how to have a good time outdoors and we have even forgotten what season we are in! Then we have to sort through all the dusty dreams stored in our minds. to remember all the things we wanted and planned to do that dematerialized with the lockdown; re-open all the wonder boxes that were so hard to give up; restart all the projects we have had on hold for months, and allow ourselves to dream again. First of all, we are planning to stay with our families and our friends in France for a while (forgetting any necessary quarantine). For me there’s no better time than just sharing in daily life - the walks, breathing in the seasonal smells, sharing our thoughts and cooking together. France is really far away and we know how tiring the trip is, so we hope to do a big loop around the world taking time to see some of its beauties. I think about the Great Wall of China, so long, so majestic and such an incredible building achievement. It would be amazing to see the whole construction and realize its scale, but this is impossible except from space such an amazing accomplishment. Another amazing construction is Angkor Wat in the north of Cambodia. It is an incredible building - like a French Cathedral. I am fascinated by the strength of this place and so impressed with the physical investment of the people to build this place of prayer or the Aztec temples in Mexico that reveal to us the fantastic early mathematical knowledge that created such an enduring and ancient temple. Now that I have made new friends in this class who come from other countries, I would like to discover their countries too. I would like to travel much more but I think about my carbon footprint. Actually, that is one of the reasons why we decided to move to Australia for three years - to reduce our tourist footprint in this place. We love being free. It is not so much about the happiness of succeeding in achieving all our projects, but just the freedom and the hope that they will one day come true. I think a great part of travelling is meeting the people, understanding their thinking and finding out how they see life. I am very excited to hear what you’re all dreaming about. Take advantage of these dream times. Amandine

04.01.2022 This week Josh Burns MP Macnamara visited one of our English classes on Zoom. It was a great opportunity for the students to meet an MP, for some for the first time but also an opportunity to show how important these classes are at the moment. Our EAL classes are not just about learning English, but help those who may not have family in Melbourne to support each other, share resources and understanding about Covid and restrictions that may be difficult in a second language and keep students engaged in their community. The Zoom classes have brought students even closer together as they see each others homes, meet their children, pets and partners and share their home lives. Our amazing teacher Vivien is working hard to keep things going and is a touchstone in these difficult times for many.

04.01.2022 THEYRE NOT JUST WORDS A good life is made up of many unique components and for every individual those components can vary. One component is how we use words on a daily basis. Many of these words are spoon-fed to us and we regurgitate them to make sense and communicate with others in an all fitting society. Currently we hear and use the words lockdown, curfew, war on virus, stay the f%*k home, stage 4, restrictions, active cases, death toll, isolation. These words are on repe...at in our minds everyday at the moment. Have you ever had an argument with a friend or partner about a word? Ive seen bar fights break out over a disagreement about what is actually blue and what is green. Ive had two hour long verbal arguments with a partner only to find out we both had a different interpretation of a particular word. About 3 years ago, someone very wise named Ruth, told me about Emotos rice experiment and the impact words can have on living organisms because of their energetic trajectory. The words LOVE, HATE, IGNORE saw a vastly different outcome on the physical existence of exactly the same rice. For 30 days Emoto, Japanese researcher carried around 3 identical jars of cooked rice but he spoke to them differently. I encourage you to look up the results. If we are constantly exposed to words that induce dire, grave negative emotion then isnt the result going to affect our state of being? Here are two sentences that can mean perfectly the same thing, but feel very different: We are in state of lockdown, stage 4 restrictions means you cannot travel, you must wear a mask or you will get a fine. We are in a state of protection, this high level of care means you are encouraged to stay with loved ones and look after them and yourselves. We support you through this important time to be safe. So we thank you all for the care you are showing in this time of protection. Every time you stay at home you are demonstrating your love for your family, friends, community and even everyone you have never met.

02.01.2022 This term our English class dreamed of the end of the pandemic. Please dream along with us! The activities I am planning to do after the Corona virus lockdown. by Emil Nobody knows when the corona virus will end so I can’t plan my future with any certainty. However, now that things are improving and some restrictions have been lifted, I would like to change my life in the following ways:... 1. Resume playing walking football in Caulfield Park. This version of football is a team game that can be played by men and women and it has a 55+ age limit, which means you have to be older than 55 to play in the team. There are a number of other restrictions in the rules of the game, for example, you cannot run, you can only move at a brisk pace. I have been pleased to play football because the team treated me very well despite my lack of experience. Players who were over 55 didn't notice my mistakes, in fact, they regularly praised me for good passing of the ball or defending against attackers. There is only one player on our team older than me. He recently turned 84. I made friends with him because he is the only one on the team who speaks Russian. 2. My dream is to visit the Blue Pools in the Moornappa Forest (3 hours by car from Melbourne) where there is a small lake and a bungee. A bungee rope is a rope tied to a tree that you can use to swing and jump into the water. 3. I also plan to visit Noojee which is a town in Gippsland, 120km from my house. I know a forester there who has a sauna and you can jump right from the hot sauna into the Mountain stream’s cold water. If you go to Noojee in autumn, you can collect oil mushrooms on the way. 4. I would like to resume my weekly pool and sauna visits in Melbourne. 5. When I visit Phillip Island, I watch the surfers ride the waves with envy. I would like to try to do this. I know that surfing requires practice and it requires not only strength but also dexterity. My grandson has a nice surfboard. When it gets quite warm I will try to "catch some waves" and stand up on the board. Last year I managed to ride the wave but I couldn’t stand up, I just lay down on the board. Hooray! Life is getting better! I hope it will get even better soon and without masks!!

01.01.2022 FREE CHILD CAR RESTRAINT CHECKS- ELWOOD Get your child car restraint checked for free by a Professional fitter who will ensure your child car restraint is installed and is being used correctly, as well as educate you and your family so everyone is equipped to check that their child is safe in the car every trip. ESNLC is proud to host the Safe Seats, Safe Kids Program for the Port Phillip area. NHVic and Kidsafe Victoria acknowledges the support of the Victorian Government f...or the program. Correctly fitted child car restraints and booster seats play a crucial part in protecting children from serious injury and death in the event of an accident. Alarmingly, 70 per cent of these are not correctly fitted or used, making injury around seven times more likely. Click on the link below and search for Elwood St Kilda Neighbourhood Learning Centre as a location and book. Every Friday from 10-2pm at the front car park of 87 Tennyson Street, Elwood 3184. To ensure the safety of all that attend, we would remind everyone to use the standard government guidelines at the time of booking/confirmation, i.e. social distancing, washing hands/sanitizing hands between every client, and being very clear about if you have flu-like symptoms, do not attend, cancel your appointment. https://safeseatssafekids.com.au/venues-mec/
