24.01.2022 This looks like a perfect way to connect with new mums.

24.01.2022 Who's up for a not-so-fun game of manipulation and coercion bingo? I'll post my scorecard in my stories. #Repost @doulasforhumanrights Thank you Jul...ie Webb @julie_web00 at What I Wish I Had Known About Becoming a Mum for this very real and very important info graphic. This is what we need to change. Firstly we must acknowledge that this is the reality for many birthing women/people. We must hold providers to a higher standard of care. We must educate birthing women/people of their rights, their ability to recognize this behavior as a continuum of obstetric violence and how they can reclaim their rights, ownership, power and autonomy of their body and experience #obstetricviolence #maternitycare #humanrightsinchildbirth #birthtrauma See more

24.01.2022 Confused by the news? Keep on breastfeeding! There have been some very sad reports of breastfed babies being separated from mothers and weaned because their mo...thers are infected with Covid19/Corona virus. There has also been advice to pump breastmilk and feed expressed milk to your baby instead of breastfeeding. The thing is, if you are infected with any illness your baby has already been exposed and as you produce antibodies to viruses and bugs your baby will receive these germ fighting substances through your milk. This is protective to your baby. Breastfeeding not only helps protect your baby against illnesses from you but to illnesses from other people, for instance, at child care. If your baby is exposed to a bug (even if you arent exposed), the transfer of his saliva to your breast will trigger your own lymphatic system to produce antibodies to those bugs and help protect your child. This is why you would keep on breastfeeding (although you can wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing) and not wean or express instead: your baby receives the best protection from direct breastfeeding. Besides, there is extra work and worry to make sure all pump parts, bottles and teats are scrupulously clean, especially if you are infected. If you are an exclusively pumping Mama, your baby will still receive immune factors from your milk and by kissing your baby (how can you resist?), you will ingest bacteria from her skin so you will make antibodies against these bugs too. If you are mixed feeding, even small amounts of breastmilk/breastfeeding are helpful in boosting your babys immunity - studies show that just a teaspoon of breastmilk contains over 3 million germ killing cells! More good news is that if you are breastfeeding a toddler, there is no use-by date on the immune factors in your milk. In fact, during the second year, the immune factors in your milk will be more concentrated, just as your little one ie becoming mobile and mixing with more people (and germs). Every bit of breast milk is protecting your baby so if you are breastfeeding but considering weaning, please reconsider continuing to breastfeed, at least through the next few months to boost your babys immune system from these extra bugs in our environment right now.

24.01.2022 Loving this take on Spinning Babies birth preparation exercises, incorporated into family life.

24.01.2022 Ever thought that perhaps you should write a letter or take steps to improve birthing choices For women, well now is your time to shine. Safer Care Victoria are inviting consumer input in response to the below guidelines - pay particular attention to the exclusion criteria for waterbirth ie VBAC, previous PPH and shoulder dystocia (I might be wrong but I cannot find scientific evidence for these exclusions - I understand that with a history of of previous pph it might be reasonable to get out of the bath for 3rd stage but not be excluded from a waterbirth). Please share, share and share agin to ensure the voices of women are heard.

24.01.2022 Probiotics in pregnancy: are they useful? "The human body is loaded with bacteria, both beneficial and non-beneficial. When non-beneficial bacteria out-numbers... beneficial bacteria we see symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, thrush, skin conditions and infections etc. Probiotics are living microorganisms that help maintain balance in our digestive and immune systems. It is well researched that they are supportive to digestive processes and in reintroducing good bacteria that have been lost to antibiotics. How do they assist in pregnancy? During the first trimester women often experience nausea, vomiting, and food sensitivities with higher levels of stress and possible antibiotics. Pregnancy hormones also affect food absorption and gut motility. These factors all contribute to the altering of our good bacteria. Women often complain of heartburn, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation and thrush which may be helped by the introduction of probiotics. Taking a daily probiotic may: - Reduce colonisation of the vagina by pathogenic bacteria and yeast - Improve digestive processes and overall gut health - Reduce vaginal Group B Streptococcus colonisation rate - Stimulate the immune system - Optimise a mothers gut flora prior to birth Are they beneficial after birth? When your baby is born their gut is sterile and they receive their bacteria firstly from the mother. Many studies have concluded having a strong and healthy bacteria colony prior to birth greatly reduces the likelihood of eczema, asthma and allergies for the child. Additionally, probiotics can help relieve or reduce breast pain and discomfort associated with mastitis. My answer? Yes, there are beneficial! .. there are specific strains and probiotics for pregnancy and breast feeding." Dr Marcia Bonazzi - Obstetrican and Gynaecologist

24.01.2022 I have attended a few homebirths in which the parents have used this method with success. If I had my time over again I would give it a go. Maybe some families would like to share their thoughts and experiences below.

23.01.2022 For those who have only remotely entertained the idea of birthing at home Corona Virus may lead you to revisit this thought. To discuss Homebirth further call Amanda on 0433545775

21.01.2022 My heart sinks when I chat to an excited mum to be about the possibility of birthing at home to have them end the conversation with I just need to convince my partner. For this reason I am always on the look-out for resources that may help this process and I am thinking this interview may be helpful.

21.01.2022 I dont think there is a single person that can say that COVID has not rocked or for some shattered their boat but I do love Ruths reference to the COVID silver-lining, the opportunity to have uninterrupted bonding time with your baby. Time to snuggle on a comfy lounge and simply adore our bubbas. I have a friend who has always said things are never all bad and that is certainly true of these times. Women and families have been able to bond beautifully with their newborns, many mamas are more rested than they would have been otherwise and many women have been blessed by beautiful empowered Homebirth they may not have planned otherwise. Hope you are feeling blessed today

21.01.2022 Why didnt I think of this!!

21.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day!! Family walk and breakfast in bed complete ready and waiting for a Mothers Day baby Happy Mothers Day to you all!!

21.01.2022 It is difficult to separate birth and family and why should we?

20.01.2022 To maintain professional support and access second midwives I have been a part of The Melbourne Midwifery Collective for the past 18 months. Together our team has adopted a response to Covid-19 which is outlined in the below attachment. Other community supports that may also be useful to families at this time are also listed.

20.01.2022 For anyone who has been declined a referral for Homebirth care this post may be useful. Please also let the Australian College of Midwives know of your experiences so that they can advocate for both women and midwives.

20.01.2022 This is your last chance to get involved and send your email to Greg Hunt MP asking for continuity of midwifery care in the community. At close of business tomo...rrow (Friday 12th June, 2020) we will close this campaign, but jump in quick and send your emails! https://homebirth.good.do/midwivesathome/ See more

20.01.2022 Doing a thing, a big fun cool thing. You know how the world LOVES to tell women horror stories about childbirth? Yeah well one of my favourite past times is the... complete opposite, where I tell pregnant women all the insanely beautiful, miraculous moments Ive witnessed in birth and beyond. I need your help to put together a resource for women that fills their hearts and souls and wombs. If you have had a baby in New Zealand, and would like to write your birth story in your own words (or any other significant moment in your childbearing/postpartum journey) I would love to hear from you. Slide into my DMs for more info. You dont have to be a writer. I will do all the editing. You can stay anonymous. Lets do a big fun cool thing together and change the narratives we give women around birth and motherhood. Cool cool cool yeah. Thanks wahine toa. (Also midwives if any of your women may like to contribute, Id love to talk to them!) Edit: I would also LOVE to hear from partners. Its so lovely to hear the other parent tell their own version of events, just make sure you have consent to share! See more

19.01.2022 Dads may think breastfeeding means spending less time with bub, but feeding is only a small part of being a parent. There are many other ways for dads to be involved.

19.01.2022 For anyone visiting my page and considering Homebirth this may be a good option.

18.01.2022 Our beautiful friend @emmaisaacs is currently in labour with her sixth baby, and has decided to live stream her homebirth. Head on over to her Instagram and che...ck out her stories... This is Emmas sixth homebirth and she wanted to share her birth with anyone who it might help to see a positive birth, in real time. Thank you, incredible woman, for spreading the word about positive birth with midwifery continuity of care. WE LOVE YOU EMMA!!! See more

17.01.2022 It looks like it is going to be quite some time before face to face childbirth education classes are offered again. I can highly recommend these classes. A big thank you to Bs generosity at this time.

16.01.2022 Families participating in birth pulls on my heartstrings. This image totally reframes the view that many women and families have of birth. If you would like to explore birth infused with love, faith in self to birth well and an opportunity to create your birth space call privately practicing midwife Amanda Schmidt. Homebirth and early labor care prior to a planned hospital birth available Ph:0433546775.

15.01.2022 The Future of Homebirth in Australia Panel Q and A

14.01.2022 I am thinking this will be well worth travelling for. I encourage women on this page to muster a car load of local mums to attend this event.

14.01.2022 I have been at it for almost 18 years and still not getting it right but I have to say that on Mothers Day to be enveloped by the deep love of my family reminds me that I have done ok. Love deep and happy Mothers Day to all you beautiful mothers!!

14.01.2022 A fellow midwife posted this today and I couldnt help but repost- the heart and life of a midwife. I still chuckle from time to time when I reflect upon that time years ago when I decided to become a midwife - oh so naive!! Who am I? I hold secrets no inquisition could extract... I hold worry in my head and hope in my heart I mix with the mucous and blood that forms life I understand surrender and the desire for control I have learned to walk confidently in the fog and softly in the sunlight I hold the hand that rocks the cradle and rules the world I watch the universe created in an instant I haunt the endless first blush of dawn I sit at the cross roads of life and death I am the soft hand on a face I am the smile through the tears I am the arms absorbing the sweat of life I am the watchful eye over the sorrowful face I am the laugher of womanhood I have been here since time awoke and I will be here when time closes I have been paid poorly, treated badly, burned at the stake but I am still here I am a midwife... Happy International Day of the midwife written by Hannah Dahlen

13.01.2022 #HomebirthAwarenessWeek2020 Because of contemporary cultural messages about how dangerous birth is, I can understand why homebirth is not an option many women c...onsider. Nonetheless research around the world suggests it’s one that should be more widely considered. Recent Australian research comparing home and hospital births tells the story: for low-risk women choosing homebirth we see no increased risk for babies, but stark differences in intervention rates. Of the women who planned homebirth 10% transferred to hospital for necessary interventions, emergency caesarean 2.5%, instrumental birth 2.5%, epidural 3.2%, episiotomy 2.9%. In contrast, for low-risk women choosing hospital the rates were caesarean 12.5%, instrumental birth 17.5%, epidural 27.5%, episiotomy 21.2%. Merely by choosing a hospital, a low-risk woman increases her chances of intervention. Of the homebirth women 95% had spontaneous vaginal births, while only 70% of women birthing in hospital did. This difference between 95% and 70% might already seem stark but it’s important to note, too, that the figure of 70% for spontaneous vaginal births in hospital doesn’t equate to normal physiological birth. It merely means the baby was born vaginally without the use of forceps or vacuum, so this 70% statistic can also include induction, augmentation, artificial rupture of membranes, managed third stage and other procedures. In contrast, the spontaneous vaginal birth statistic of 95% for women choosing homebirth equates predominantly to normal physiological birth. These positive stats are reflective of homebirth research worldwide. Yet in Australia, in contrast to other countries and despite the evidence of its safety and benefits, homebirth is neither routinely promoted nor easily accessible. Hence the need for an ‘awareness week’ and for me to maintain my passion for promoting homebirth. Happy Homebirth Awareness Week 2020!

12.01.2022 In response to the escalating Coronavirus and womens concerns surrounding attending appointments in waiting rooms and birthing in hospital environments, I would like to offer a range of services to women of South Gippsland. I am able to offer pregnancy checks in your home, face-to-face birth preparation, labour and post-birth care to reduce hospital stay and opportunities to birth at home. Please share this post to ensure women in your community are aware of this option for care. Call Amanda to explore options for you. PH 0433546775.

09.01.2022 POSITION during labour and birth makes a difference to each womans unique physiology. This is a great visual demonstrating the descent and rotation of the fetu...s with the mother in an UPRIGHT position. Hurray! Reposted from @themindfulbirthgroup Visualisation is such an important part of keeping calm and relaxed. It helps to take our mind off of what is out of our control, and in this case its the mothers natural expulsive reflex to birth her baby. This incredible video shows mums body and baby working together to birth baby in the most comfortable way for both of them Some women find it helpful to visualise baby moving in this way at the birthing stage, others find the letter J helps them to direct their breathing, and some like a waterfall visual. Choose something that works for you and use it when you start feeling the natural urge to bear down #visualisation #birthvisuals #mumandbaby See more

09.01.2022 As I reflect upon recent years as a midwife in private practice 95% of my clients are those seeking Homebirth care. Choosing to birth at home is one way to journey towards an undisturbed birth, another alternative is to seek the support of a privately practicing midwife to walk alongside you, to support you as you negotiate a minefield of hospital guidelines and medical opinions. I look forward to expanding my practice in this way to provide women with the opportunity to write a personalised birth plan, have early labour midwifery care at home prior to attending hospital for birth and ongoing birth support after admission to hospital. For more information call now on ph:0433546775.

09.01.2022 Does anyone else have concerns about the number of women receiving iron transfusions in pregnancy? This perspective iron stores and supplementation is worth consideration.

07.01.2022 Time for a new pinned post I think this little baby has just turned one! WELCOME!! Im so happy youre here! I thought it was time to re-introduce mysel...f and my services as things are changing pretty quickly around here. I am a social worker of almost 15 years, postpartum doula and parent educator and am passionate about supporting maternal mental health from pre-conception through to parenting older children. I am a matrescence nerd and love talking with women about their experience of their transition to motherhood. I support women during pregnancy and in the early weeks and months after their baby is born to have a beautiful postpartum period filled with love, support and rest. Unfortunately our Western culture does not revere pregnancy and the postpartum period in the way many other cultures around the world do and this can lead to many new parents feeling exhausted and overwhelmed due to a lack of support. I, amongst many others, think it is time for a paradigm shift and I am excited to be a part of this social change. My vision is that all new parents enter parenthood feeling confident, relaxed and supported and that their postpartum experience is a positive and peaceful one. Speaking to many new parents I know this is rarely the case. I love supporting couples to make this possible. I also love supporting parents to navigate the challenges of parenting kids up to age 6, through offering connection, listening to feelings and non-punitive discipline (boundary setting). The services I offer changed a little due to the pandemic, however I am excited that I have now resumed in-home support. Below you will find all the services I am currently offering. 07.01.2022 Encompassing all I love about Homebirth

07.01.2022 I want to shout out to all my beautiful midwife colleagues who have done exactly this - changing the world one birth at a time. We cant seem to change the system despite wholehearted efforts but we can change birth one birth at a time. Happy International Midwives Day.

07.01.2022 This Sunday. Thanks to the Homebirth advocates for collaborating with this piece. And of course, all the consumers who have happily been interviewed about their experience of homebirthing during covid-19. Link to segment: https://m.facebook.com/story.php

06.01.2022 The battle continues. Please take a moment to remind Greg Hunt of his responsibilities to enable women and families to access Medicare funding for private midwifery care. Womens birthing needs have been considerably ignored during recent months and that is not OK. I love the movie Made in Dagenham - a movie every woman should watch. Given that women equate to approximately 50% of the population it shouldnt be so easy for our government to ignore our needs. Come on girls time to stand together and stand firm.

06.01.2022 During this Pandemic - lets try and remember the importance of respecting childbirth physiology - and to only intervene when necessary. Here are some top tips... from wonderful midwife Evony Lynch https://www.all4maternity.com/optimising-normal-birth-tips/ Claire Feeley Anna Coonan-Byrom Hannah Tizard Lesley Page Sheena Byrom Alicia Burnett Milli Hill Nicky Grace Indie Kaur Kemi Johnson

05.01.2022 I am certain this couple has no regrets, unlike families who have experienced unplanned separation during births for so many reasons; partners needing to care for children who are not allowed in the birth room, support people with fevers, only one support person allowed in the birth room & partners no allowed to stay overnight post-birth. This is all before we consider the mamas sent home to fend for themselves with nothing more than a phone support. My heart bubbles with joy as I read about the experiences of women birthing at home that otherwise wouldnt have made this decision.

01.01.2022 I took a sneaky peak at Bs last class and loved it. Highly recommended

01.01.2022 5 hours labour. . . 41 weeks gestation. .... . 42 years of age. . . As a 43 year old homebirther, I think this is cool. . . Reposted from @midwifejohunter BIRTH: it’s outrageous what happens when you leave it alone. (I particularly like the last hashtag Jerusha ) #repost @jerushasutton ...... @jerushasutton: Meet Amy. Just shy of 42 years old. First baby. Homebirth. 41 weeks gestation. Rocked a 5 hour labour. In Amy’s words.... I had to do A LOT of mental preparation and re-education around the normality of labour and birth after many years of being an institutionalised hospital based midwife who was too scared to have her baby in a hospital setting During her pregnancy and re-education she found inspiration and strength from @badassmotherbirther (like many clever women do - we love you Flor!). And earlier in the labour her hilariously gorgeous partner Pete printed her a special mantra for her birthing space - scroll through and check it out. What he wrote was right, there absolutely was a BADASS MOTHER BIRTHER IN THE HOUSE. Welcome to the world Charlotte Sophia.
