25.01.2022 Misadventures with turmeric. If you ever see a blog post about how amazing turmeric is for your hair, I warn you now, that is for black or brown hair. Definitely not grey I'll-take-any-colour-you-put-on-me hair. Sheesh. Lesson learned. Happy to have been the guinea pig for you. Never thought I'd be so desperate to get my grey hair back!! . 18.01.2022 New class - starting Monday June 8th Core and back strength is so important it's a wonder we get around life without needing more of it... until of course we do. As the mother of a child in a wheelchair I've spent twelve years lifting and moving pretty heavy weights (bodies, wheelchairs, equipment etc) around and experienced many and diverse instances of back pain. ... Yoga benefits back pain in so many ways - stress reduction and management, strengthening, flexibility and general well-being. The addition of targeted excercises for core and back strength has made all the difference for me and I look forward to sharing it all with you. 17.01.2022 Chai is more than a yummy drink it's an opportunity to ingest volatile oils from the real spices (IRL!) that assist with digestion & immunity. In Ayurveda it's a 'rasayan' a drink for longevity. Need I say more?? Oh yeah actually I do... the stuff you buy that is powdered chai or flavoured chai does not deliver this potent package of goodness. The spices need to be boiled then the tea and milk added after. Need a recipe?? I make mine with seasonal adjustments This current batch has some fragrant rose petals gathered from neighbours and friends (who don't spray their flowers) to help with cooling my naturally fiery Pitta temperament . 14.01.2022 So much heart-warming cuteness in the yoga room this morning! This is not usually what doing yoga in Australia looks like ... Little Dusty was rescued from the pouch of her mum who'd been hit by a car. Lovely Mez found him and has raised Dusty (much like a newborn with multiple feeds daily and nightly) and he's now about 4 months old. And he's just starting to learn to hop! He's drinking a marsupial formula provided by Healing Hands Wildlife Care Western Australia.... 11.01.2022 Healing Plant powders on pretty teaspoons... These three are definitely in my top three most recommended to my Ayurveda clients. With stress and grief and challenging times these ones need to be a cupboard staple. ASHWAGANDHA - aka Withania Somnifera - is one of the best anti-aging & vitality herbs. It's crucial for people who are overworked and over-stressed. SHATAVARI - translated as "she who possesses a thousand husbands" boosts vitality and is especially rejuvenative fo...r women. TRIPHALA - a blend of three herbs in one this is a formula for assisting in digestion, elimination and rejuvenation. They can be taken in warm mylks or water and I add mine to my breakfast porridge so I don't forget! And they aren't gross. Important to mention because some herbs are really so powerfully stinky you just won't take them. The best medicine really is the one you actually take And how lovely are my teaspoons! Who wouldn't want to take their rejuvenative powders with such loveliness on show....

10.01.2022 Digestion, Yoga, Ayurveda & YOU Ayurveda is an ancient science of health and longevity that has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years. It has a foundation of recognising digestive capacity (or in Ayurveda ‘agni’ which translates as digestive fire) as the lynchpin to good health, immunity, longevity and balance. Ayurveda guides each individual according to their unique constitution (called Dosha in Ayurveda) and there are three doshas, called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. We... all have a combination of all three with one that predominates more than the others. Each of the dosha constitutions thrive with their own unique balance of diet, exercise and lifestyle and as we move away from what our natural state of balance is for our own unique constitution we can then suffer from ailments that can be remedied by a balanced approach. Like increases like ; opposites balance. Our lifelong constitution will never change but we will all at one time or another be sent off balance from our personal constitution by our lifestyle, changes in diet or habits. To come back into balance we work out which particular area is out of balance (Vata Pitta or Kapha) and then follow the protocol for bringing that particular dosha back into balance. For example . A typical predominantly Vata individual is slender regardless of height, has prominent joints, dryish hair and skin, thrives with busyness and lots to do and dislikes cold weather and environments. They are usually sensitive folks who can be erratic, forget to eat and suffer with digestive complaints, anxiety, insomnia, PMS and dry skin. For a person who is suffering with Vata-related complaints of bloating, digestive pains, dry skin, arthritis, sleeplessness, forgetfulness, monkey-mind erratic thoughts and a feeling of being all over the place they would balance out with some Vata-pacifying habits such as: keeping warm (especially around the neck and ears); eat warming cooked food; using particular warming sweet spices like cinnamon; slow down and seek routine as much as possible and follow a yoga routine that encourages steadiness and stability - holding poses a little longer and using plenty of blankets or even a hot pack on the belly to encourage warmth and stomach relaxation during savasana. 09.01.2022 Every Tuesday night is Shakti yoga night. Week after week we cycle through the elements and the chakras to bring awareness to parts of our energy-body-mind that may be feeling out of alignment or stuck. We use the flow of the elemets and chakras in yoga asana poses plus the subtlety of mudras and intention to allow energy to flow and gather. And my Ayurveda training usually has me popping in a few comments about seasonal connections here too. Shakti yoga is gentle but powerf...ul. Tonight we are at the element ether | space | akasha. Space holds everything unconditionally. We encourage equanimity here. 06.01.2022 As we change seasons outwardly it's also time to take a look and see what's happening for us internally. Excess heat held from a build up of Pitta in summer might be causing skin rashes, inflammation, intense emotions or reflux. Once we've balanced that out (kitchari mono diet for a few days and particular herbs or plants specific for pitta) we then prepare for the season ahead and theeeeen get on top of the one after that - yeah I don't want to think about winter yet either but that's how we roll in Ayurved!
