22.01.2022 An Emerge year in review No doubt scrolling through your social media feeds today you’ll find a lot of 2020 reflections, many shadowed by the C Word. And while Emerge was most certainly impacted by that big ole virus and gave us a few solid scares, covid-19 may have in its own unique way been one of the best things to happen to us. ...Continue reading

22.01.2022 There’s always a fair amount of challenge down at Emerge; usually related to funding, reliable volunteers a shortage of resources, emergency accommodation or another crisis.. hell its what we signed up for But this week just felt like one of those that kept reminding us why we do what we do. In the last week I’ve cried about a billion times with pride for some of our young people’s light bulb moments; when a lady walked in and asked to have a photo with A young person ...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Awesome to have our little mate James helping out in the kitchen today and boy was it a busy day! James is a bit young to be a permanent employee, but he’s absolutely a part of our Emerge family. His favourite dinosaur is a T-Rex and his favourite Emerge memory was when our youth workers gave him his own phone. ... Most Thursdays he comes down and gives us a hand in the cafe, washing dishes, clearing tables or hanging with the older kids soaking up their positive journeys and learning how to stay out of trouble he’s an amazing helper, and always helps us keep on top of our bustling little cafe. We meet lots of young people in our community of all ages, sizes and with all sorts of stories; what’s important is that we can stick around so we can be a safe place when they need us. Help us keep helping kids like James by popping in for a coffee or meal with a side of social good for youth who need a hand

21.01.2022 I was out shopping yesterday at Officeworks, loading up on materials to do some goal vision boards with our Oakey boxing crew when I was approached by a lovely lady who handed me a $50 note. At first I was a little confused by the gesture and asked what’s this for she replied, please just keep looking after those kids, Thankyou for what you do $50 down at Emerge can go a long way, a few crisis meals to warm a belly, a few hours of crisis support with a youth worker, a ca...re package of hygiene items, food and staples, a mobile phone so that we can contact them, a bus ride home to a safer place, an overnight stay in our lighthouse room and lots of other things we provide down at Emerge. It’s been a tough year and we officially have cancelled every extra fundraising event we had planned for 2020. Now it’s down to the business we raise in the cafe, donations, and crossing our fingers for some small grants we’ve applied for. Yesterday, this lady’s generosity did something more than just provide some practical resources to our kids; she showed me once again that the community has our back and in turn the backs of our youth who need a hand. Keeping kids safe, out of jail and reaching their potential. Without you guys there is no us.... Thankyou

20.01.2022 Yesterday we were blessed to receive a massive donation delivery of gorgeous grass fed beef to our cafe from Bill Ryan from Acacia Downs Beef. We are able to fill the freezers in our youth residential house house 360 our cafe freezers of gourmet sausages for our big brekkies, and some beautiful roasts for our Emerge Long Table dinners on Thursday nights Thankyou so much Bill, we appreciate your support for our young people

17.01.2022 Have you tried one of our grilled chicken burgers yet? Delicious grilled chicken, bacon, sundried tomato and aioli on a toasted bun Every single one is served up with a side of social good for young people who need a hand, and that just tastes better

17.01.2022 Today I (Jen ) headed to the Brisbane Youth Detention centre to meet with staff to greater develop our relationship with the youth justice system and reach our goal of keeping kids out of jail and reaching their true potential. You might not know this but about 15 years ago, the concept of Emerge was based around an alternative to detention project that was then running in the Northern Territory. Of course it’s evolved and changed over time, but I must admit there’s a speci...al place in my vision for kids involved in the youth justice system. It’s pretty cool to see the commitment from varying government bodies to work with grassroots organisations like us after seeing all of our good work and unquestionable success with kids involved in the youth justice system. It was awesome to take a tour, visit some of our kids currently in detention and learn more about what’s currently happening in detention centres, and what is coming next. I couldn’t help but think about all the kids I grew up with and how things might have changed if they’d have been able to access something like Emerge way back then... I continuously pinch myself that I’m able to live my dream and show that youth work and the way we care for our children as a community can look different Oh and I promised a young man a job when he’s released early next year... so I really need your help to make sure we still have a cafe by then See you soon at 1 Station Street for a coffee or breakfast/ lunch with a side of social good

17.01.2022 Everyday at Emerge we meet incredible kids who’ve been dealt a crappy hand and are searching for a way to live a better life. The need is rising with 8 young people contacting us in the last 24 hours alone for support for high risk situations. (Most of these under 17 years of age) We believe that all it takes to help change a young persons life is one caring adult that shows up and does whatever it takes, for however long it takes. ... With at least 130 young people homeless on any given night, the highest youth unemployment rate in the country and a high youth incarceration rate in our state, our work is more important than never before. Emerge is preparing to support over 60 young people through the next 6 months through employment, outreach support, crisis resources such as showers, washing facilities, meals and care packs and accommodation in our house 360 residential facility. We need your support to help us keep showing up. Some ways you can help Pop into our cafe for a coffee or a meal with a side of social good Order your catering for the end of year period with us (we’ve been working on some awesome individual offerings to be covid safe) Build a care package for a young person; pantry staples, a Christmas present, new socks or drop into the cafe for some more ideas Consider a tax deductible donation as a one off or regularly. Keep an when our for our online fundraising campaign launching in a few weeks! Thanks for being in our corner, we can’t do it without you

16.01.2022 Farewell, Miss Tia About 3 1/2 years ago, this beautiful indigenous young woman came bounding through our youth hub doors; brought to us to attend our box off the streets program (kicking and screaming with loads of attitude I might add ) It was pretty easy to see she had been through some stuff, covered in scars of self harm and a kind of closed off demeanour, I knew instantly she was going to put a wall up. ... Through late night phone calls; where she was on the roof running amuck for her residential care workers, tears because she was struggling with her mental health or her uncertainty of where life might take her next we’ve seen it all with her, and what a journey it’s been. When we piloted our social enterprise cafe inside an old folks home; she was quick to jump in, it was then we noticed just how brilliant her leadership skills were (and how much she shone in developing friendly relationships with the old folks) When we started our cafe in Station Street, we knew she’d be the perfect fit for a junior team leader. It hasn’t always been perfect; at Emerge we become like a family so there’s been days we’ve had to deliver and be delivered real talk, some days mental health just finds a way to interrupt, but every other day and in between?... She’s grown and blossomed into a young woman determined to live a better life in the future. Taking the opportunities we’ve put in front of her and moving into a big and beautiful life ahead. So many of our regular customers have told us how privileged they’ve felt to watch her grow, and we too have seen her shine and conquer, But the only way Emerge works, is when our kids transition into another opportunity, when they are strong enough to stand without us (even though none ever truly leave our Emerge family) She’s bold enough to say yes and brave enough to believe in their own potential now and that’s exactly why we do what we do. While it’s not good bye forever, because that’s not how we roll at Emerge; we say farewell from our cafe miss Tia and wish you all the best in your something new
