25.01.2022 I had a very insightful but scary chat with Bond University's Dr Wayne Petherick who says the entire world (including councils and parents) are too hung up on the risks of an activity when they should be looking at the benefits of it, say allowing kids (of appropriate age) to play outside in cul-de-sacs etc. "...Evidence is clear that we’re becoming less social and losing essential brain function that governs social behaviour and importantly, problem solving parts of the brain, he said. Some people are attributing the reduction in mass of the frontal lobe of the brain to a lack of social interaction, with people being online more."

13.01.2022 Remember the Gold Coast's amazing young 23yo one-armed mechanic? He is now a state finalist at the Queensland Training Awards this Friday. He's also on the hunt for a sponsor to tune up his beloved wheels (because he's on apprentice mechanic wages) and he did have one lined up but they pulled out after a TV station cut the plug he gave it on air.... so it's back to the drawing board. Maybe the legends at 1029 Hot Tomato might be able to share Alex's story, see if they can't drum up a sponsor? Let's get Alex a tune up, it costs anywhere from $900-1500.

12.01.2022 A CLOSE friend of Gold Coast shark attack victim Nick Slater has told Bulletin reporter Emily Toxward that Nick was loved by all that knew him. The gravity of this tragedy will be felt by the Surfing community from Newcastle to the Gold Coast for eternity, said Jasmine Robson. Nick was loved by all that knew him. A fun loving guy who lived in the water and relished every moment. He died doing something he loved at one of his favourite beaches and we all have to take comfort in that. Clearwater Surf owner Steve Del Russo shared two photos of Mr Slater holding a longboard, with the caption: RIP Nick my thoughts are with your family and friends. Such sad news. Nick was a great guy and a customer who picked up a new log only last week.

09.01.2022 This afternoon I felt honoured to be invited to attend the celebration of Ash’s life... An amazing Gold Coaster who passed away at just 23 because her life-threatening melanoma was misdiagnosed. I hugged Ash’s mum Tracey and we cried as I hugged her and whispered that a mother should never lose her baby girl. I can’t imagine her and Tony’s grief. But Ashleigh wanted her message to be heard loud and clear, and I am committed to making this happen.... Be that squeaky wheel, make sure you always get a second opinion from a doctor if you think something doesn’t feel right. You will never be forgotten Ashleigh. See more

09.01.2022 Not everyone is happy that Queensland schools will end their year two days early. My kids are! What are your thoughts?

09.01.2022 Hey fellow parents, I wrote an article about how our local council can give out $667 on-the-spot fines if people have basketball hoops in cul-de-sacs or anywhere on council land after a mum of 4 was told to move hers after someone complained. Now I’ve seen heaps of hoops on streets etc and I encourage my kids to get outside and play around quiet streets near our house but nearly 200 people were like.. ‘Good job council’ ‘Take your kids to the park’... ‘The hoop is a hazard (when it clearly wasn’t) ‘What an entitled woman etc’ And it got me thinking about how different it was back when we were kids, we were encouraged to go outside and play, and cul-de-sacs were the best place to hang. I’d love your thoughts? Should kids be allowed to be kids and play outside on cul-de-sacs and quiet streets? Shouldn’t kids be allowed to be kids? Or do no longer want kids playing in streets? (Please tag Gold Coaster if you can)
