25.01.2022 Oats, a true nervous system tonic. A go-to for burn out, exhaustion, anxiety, nervousness, and depletion. I’ve been splashing this into a lot of mixes lately because of its nourishing, warming and soothing properties. ... If you feel like your nervous system needs some restoring, rebalancing and rebuilding, perhaps you would also benefit from the beauty of lovely oats.

23.01.2022 One of the many pearls of wisdom shared by Petrea King at the @biomedicanutraceuticals oncology summit last week. Healing should involve body, mind and spirit by reigniting a sense of purpose, fostering connection with yourself and others, regaining control over responses to life and a deep reverence for this life. Focusing solely on the injured body part, the disease or affected organ does not offer an individualised plan for true wellness.... You are not your body, you have one. #naturopathicmedicine #healingjourney #mindbodysoul #centralcoastnsw

17.01.2022 I was hesitant to speak about this topic but I get asked what I think about the covid-19 vaccine and vaccinations in general quite a lot and like I tell everyone: It doesn’t matter what my opinion is, it matters how you feel and how informed you are to make your decision. What I think is important is to understand that there are a number of available vaccines for covid-19 and their ingredients and the way they work is quite different. Some are using DNA sequenced from the c...ovid-19 virus, some use modified viruses similar to covid-19, and some are using lab-made proteins based on the covid-19 virus. They each act differently in the body and so theoretically have different pros and cons. My first piece of advice would be to find out which one is available to you and how it works from your doctor. If you decide to go ahead with the vaccination, help your body prepare for an immune response. For those of us who have stronger immune systems (17-65 yrs) research suggests we are more likely to experience symptoms from the vaccination because our immune systems are mounting a much stronger defence to this new substance. Probiotics and certain nutrients may assist with minimising your risk of having these symptoms but it’s also important to be gentle with your body after having any vaccination. Your immune system is working super hard, especially for the 48 hours following, to do its job of locating, identifying and processing this new substance. Rest, drink lots of water and don’t have any big plans for intensive exercise or a late night out. Most of us have had vaccinations throughout our life and been completely fine, whereas some have had reactions either immediately or over the long term. Try not to let fear guide you in either direction. Other people’s opinions should not influence your health. The decision needs to be personal and individual.

15.01.2022 Hempseeds used to be considered a by-product of the textile/fibre industry however it has now come to light the immense nutritional qualities of internal consumption for these little beauties. Hempseeds are composed of around 25-35% lipids, 20-25% protein and 20-30% carbohydrate depending on where and how it was grown. They can be consumed whole or pressed into an oil with more and more products coming such as protein powders and milks. 90% of the lipids are unsaturated fat...ty acids with 70-80% composed of poly-unsaturated fatty acids the good stuff! Hemp also sit perfectly in the omega 3 to omega ratio of 3:1 5:1. Scientific research has shown that hempseed proteins contain all of the essential amino acids required by humans. They are particularly high in glutamic acid and arginine which are great for heart and nervous system health. The carbohydrate content of hempseeds is low starch and a good source of fibre. They also contain good levels of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, manganese, and zinc, as well as antioxidants. Seriously, is there anything these little guys can’t do? #nutition #hempseeds #hempoil #protein #naturopathy #centralcoastnsw #newcastlensw

09.01.2022 It is sometimes suggested in my practice that cutting out dairy may be beneficial for your health particularly if you are experiencing problems with your skin, digestion, sinus or period pain. If dairy has been a big part of your diet for a while, looking for alternatives may be overwhelming. There is so much choice now! Here is some brief info on cow’s milk alternatives that may help with your decisions:... Hemp: + high in protein + good nutrient profile + environmentally sustainable - harder to find +/- nutty/earthy taste - can be expensive ($7 per bottle) Almond: + some protein content - not great for the environment - often has a lot of thickeners and additives - can be inflammatory for people with nut sensitivities or who are autoimmune + tastes quite mild + affordable price ($4 per bottle) Rice: + generally a safe milk for allergies - low protein and fats + environmentally sustainable - has often got a lot of additives +/- tastes quite sweet + affordable price ($2 per bottle) Coconut: - low protein + high in healthy saturated fats (but you do not want to over-consume) - canned options often have BPA (toxin) lining + taste is mild-sweet + affordable price ($2 per bottle) Oat: - low protein +/- no fat content - not recommended for anyone with gluten sensitivity +/- oaty taste +/- mid-range price ($5 per bottle) Soy: + good protein content - not suggested for anyone with hormonal imbalances - often has a lot of additives and thickeners - most soy beans are genetically modified - unsustainable environmentally +/- mid-range price ($5 per bottle) I think it’s nice to switch it up rather than sticking to the same thing every week. Why not keep an eye out for what’s on special or some brands to a combo of two different milks together. #dairyfree #nutrition #naturopath #centralcoastnsw #almondmilk #hempmilk #coconutmilk #soymilk #lactosefree

09.01.2022 The vagus nerve runs from our brain down into our gut and has an important role in regulating balance within various areas of our body. Around 20% of the vagus nerve fibres are efferent which means they send signals from the brain out to the body. That means 80% of the fibres are afferent, sending signals from our organs back to our brain. This is what we refer to as the gut-brain connection and one of the links between our gut health and anxiety or mood disorders. Vagus ne...rve stimulation refers to any technique where the nerve is manually stimulated. There are specific devices that can be surgically inserted to conduct electrical impulses onto the nerve which have been shown to be effective for children with uncontrolled epilepsy. However, there are also less invasive options out there which have shown useful for those who may be experiencing depression, anxiety, gut health issues such as inflammatory bowel disease, wide-spread inflammation and heart conditions. Due to the location of the vagus nerve running from our face, down our neck into our torso, activities such as humming, gargling or singing can stimulate the nerve manually due to the vibrations impacting on the nerve. Research has found a reduction in the heart rate of choir singers and a direct association with certain notes in their music with states of relaxation. Chanting Om also stimulates the vagus nerve which suggests that monks may have found a body hack to support their immune systems while meditating many years ago! This could also explain why yelling and gruffing can be so remedial during times of stress. Exposure to cold is another way to stimulate the vagus nerve and can be as simple as blasting cold water at the end of your shower or if you’re up for it, plunging into a cold pool, ocean or river. Next time you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed or a little unwell, try splashing your face with cold water or singing your favourite song and see how this makes you feel. #stressrelief #vagusnerve #guthealth #naturopathy #centralcoastnsw #newcastlensw
