25.01.2022 A big CONGRATULATIONS to Kerrie Hughson (nee Small) from the Class of 1996 who has recently become Partner at local accounting firm, Sinclair Wilson. Kerrie is the third female to join the team of 18 Principals at the firm, and one of only four women who lead accounting firms in Warrnambool. Kerrie’s new role sees her co-leading the firm’s Self-Managed Superannuation Fund Division, a team she has been with since 2006. Drawn to working with people, Kerrie enjoys the relation...ships that evolve through the consulting process. Now she is relishing the additional challenge of staying atop of economic and legislative changes to guide the rest of the team. While to Kerrie it seems like a lifetime ago, she vividly remembers her excitement of starting at Emmanuel College. Kerrie was part of the first Year 7 class to start at the newly formed Emmanuel College. I was so excited to get there in Year 7. Although I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t get a turn of being at an all-girl’s school. I had really lovely friends, I had great teachers she explains. Initially convinced that she wanted to be a lawyer, Kerrie started a Commerce/Law degree at Deakin in Geelong. However, this wasn’t to last long. Kerrie quickly found where her skills were best put to use, and switched things up to a straight commerce degree and has never looked back. It also allowed Kerrie to return to Warrnambool to study an option she far preferred. Following her graduation in 1999, Kerrie moved to Melbourne for a Graduate Assurance and Advisory position with one of the esteemed ‘Big 4’ international firms Deloitte. To get a picture of the size of the organisation, she was one of more than 100 graduates added to their Melbourne office in that year! After two years in Melbourne, it was her family that motivated Kerrie to return home, and saw her quickly join Sinclair Wilson as an auditor. Kerrie hopes to inspire other young women and Emmanuel College students to challenge themselves beyond their own expectations. Women often don’t apply for things because they don’t think they can tick every box. They should give it a go and see where it leads. #emmanuelalumni #connectedasone

25.01.2022 In Term 3, several Emmanuel College brass band members competed for the first time in the Online Victorian Bands' League Solo and Ensemble Competition. This is a statewide competition that is usually held in Melbourne, but like most events this year, it was held virtually. Instead of playing 'live' on a stage with an accompanist or other ensemble members, all students had to submit a video of themselves performing at home. The competition attracted more than four hundred e...ntries from all over Australia. Representing Emmanuel College were soloists: Year 9 students Alyssa Miles O'Bray on Tuba and Rose Harvey on Trombone. Year 10 students Samara Herpich on French Horn, Quaid Hinkley on Euphonium and Libby Gass on Euphonium. Our brass teacher Mrs Jessica Finnigan also participated in the competition and commended the effort and commitment put into this project by the students. The results of the competition were just announced in the school holidays. Alyssa and Samara each received 2nd place in their respective instrument sections. Libby and Quaid also created a 'virtual' euphonium duet together, also receiving 2nd place. All of these soloists worked together to perform virtually as the Emmanuel College Brass Ensemble, creating their entry of "Hawaii 5-0 theme song." The band received 2nd place for the Junior Ensemble section. What a fantastic effort! Congratulations to our Emmanuel College brass band members. We are so very proud of you and of our school music program.

25.01.2022 A warm Congratulations to our students who were awarded Merit Badges in our Year 11 virtual assembly this week. Under the current Covid circumstances it has been really difficult for students to obtain merit points, so we are exceptionally proud of students who have managed to earn merit badges in 2020. (Please note that Certificates and Badges will be mailed through Australia Post next week.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vy0MDywwEEg&feature=youtu.be

24.01.2022 Year 10 student Jaylen Brown was invited to attend the Australian Senior Mens Wheelchair Basketball Team, known as the Rollers, camp in Canberra. Whilst Jaylen is not vying for a place in the Rollers Paralympic Team for Tokyo 2021, he was invited as an opportunity to experience the high performance environment and to push for future selection in the Australian team. Congratulations Jaylen, what an honour! In further basketball news, Basketball Victoria has announced player...s for its State Development Program. Emmanuel College Year 8 student, Molly McLaren and Year 9 Matilda Sewell both made the high performance pathway for Under 16 girls. In the Under 16 boys Charlie McKinnon and Kane Rae-Rentsch of Year 8 and Finn O'Sullivan of Year 9 made the cut. George Stevens and Harry McGorm of Year 10 were named in the Under 18 squad. Given that these Emmanuel athletes all had time off the basketball court in 2020, it is impressive that they were able to shine whilst representing Warrnambool Basketball Inc. We wish these students good luck in State selection. Emmanuel College looks forward to students getting out on the court in both interschool basketball competitions and the Year 9 and 10 elective Basketball Academy in 2021. 23.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone in our wonderful Emmanuel College community. We all made it to the end of Term 3! Today's video is a warm and fuzzy celebration of our constant companions and furry friends whilst we have been at home. Meet the dogs of Emmanuel College! Enjoy the holiday break and the easing of restrictions. We deserve it. ... https://youtu.be/KW4UvcZ6TdA See more

22.01.2022 It was wonderful to see an extra curricular activity occur for some lucky students last Friday. Emmanuel College participated in the annual Catholic Schools Chess tournament against four other regional Catholic schools. Due to corona virus there was, of course, only one way to participate - online. In the real world, chess players would normally play a game of approximately 15 minutes, but in this virtual tournament each game was set at 6 minutes per match. This challe...nging change in time requires players to think, process and make a move almost 3 times quicker than usual. Chess Coach Mr Andrew McKenzie was very proud of our chess players. They played well and faced strong opposition. Emmanuel College and St Patrick's College, Ballarat were neck to neck right to the last round, with the final result seeing Emmanuel College placed second. We congratulate Emmanuel College participants: Jacob Gome, Martin Wohlers, Anh Dang, Max Rea, Khang Dang, Sebastian Hintum, Kuyan Bowden, Charlie Clancey, Ayrton Wohlers, Reuben Knoll-Miller, Dalia Manytuil and Jamieson Mueglitz for all participating from home and well done to Year 12 student Jacob Gome on being the first placed individual player of the competition. 21.01.2022 Emmanuel’s VCAL students are not allowing COVID19 restrictions hinder them from completing their projects and contributing to the wider community. Earlier this year VCAL students, Ruby-Lee Cook, Grace Dowd and Riley Ford, contacted Emma House, a domestic violence community service, to ask if they could do something to help the children that are displaced due to domestic violence a crime that has risen significantly during the pandemic, according to the Australian Institute ...of Criminology. Emma House responded with a request for some packs to be made up for girls between the ages of six and eight with essential items and some special treats. The students happily obliged and set out to search items and cost them to enable packs to be put together. Together they overcame a few obstacles thrown at them by the COVID restrictions and managed to put together these wonderful packs. Emmanuel’s VCAL Coordinator Brendan Donahoo said, The students have taken great leadership and initiative in seeking out a community organisation that they can support while navigating the challenging logistics during COVID 19 restrictions of project-based, hands on learning as part of their VCAL program this year. Their original plans were to seek donations and fundraise before the pandemic hit. The project was paused until we knew what was happening with remote learning version. They’ve picked it back up this time around and to ensure the project followed through to success, items have been purchased and sourced locally with support from the Emmanuel Learning Support team as students can’t get out to purchase themselves. If it is received well by Emma House and there is more demand the team will explore scaling up or producing more with donations and fundraising once we’re back at school face-to-face. Congratulations on your initiative and community spirit Ruby-Lee, Grace and Riley!

19.01.2022 In 2019 we added to the now well-established Inspiring Alumni by acknowledging the achievements of our younger alumni who are achieving highly in the early stages of their careers and are making significant contributions to the community. 18.01.2022 Each Homeroom at Emmanuel College was invited to submit a photo into the "Best Homeroom Photo" competition, run as some fun during extended Homeroom class on RU OK? Day. There was fantastic creativity and great use of technology in the photographs submitted. 9B are even holding up the names of residents that they wrote to in the May Noonan Memorial Hostel for the Aged in Terang. How delightful! Thank you to our homeroom classes for participating. It will be interesting to look back in years to come and recall the time when going to class via Zoom and Google Classroom was the norm. Which Homeroom do you think should win the competition?

17.01.2022 Today is RU OK? Day. Whilst it's a national day of action, today we particularly remind the Emmanuel College community that every day is a good day to ask, Are you OK? 2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and someone in your world might be struggling with life's ups and downs. Starting a conversation and staying connected can make a really positive difference. All students were invited to check in with our new Wellbeing tool "Skodel" and watch a video message made by some of our Year 11 and 12 Leadership group (who have proven themselves to be exceptionally resilient this year.) #RUOK?

15.01.2022 Splish Splash! Days like the Emmanuel College swimming sports carnival are important days of absolute fun for our students when we live in unpredictable times. There were activities galore for both swimmers and non swimmers alike including novelty pool events, art activities, a barbecue, chanting and you could even sign up for public speaking events. Students filled the hillside at AquaZone dressed in their house colours sporting tutus, t-shirts and face zinc in red, blue, ...green and gold. A big Congratulations goes to the McAuley House who were the swimming sports champions today! See more

15.01.2022 The Victorian Premiers' Reading Challenge was an extra curricular activity that was able to proceed at Emmanuel College in 2020. The Challenge encourages young Victorians to pick up a book and get into reading by asking challengers to complete fifteen books by September. Emmanuel College encourages our students to participate in the Premier's Reading Challenge to foster and develop a life long love of reading. We congratulate the students that participated in the challenge in 2020 as it finishes this week. LRC Coordinator Mrs Margaret Sinnott looks forward to presenting students who completed the challenge with their certificates in Term 4. Cody Brown of 7I joined in by reading books from John Marsden's "Tomorrow When The War Began" series.

13.01.2022 Seventeen Year 9 and 10 students from the Emmanuel Surf Lifesaving Academy Class were assessed for their Bronze Medallion Lifesaving Certificate today. The Royal Surf Lifesaving Bronze Medallion is recognised across Australia as the minimum standard for a qualified lifesaver. Students had to display many practical requirements such as demonstrating effective CPR, swimming competency in multiple different strokes, towing a patient, survival rescue techniques and basic manag...ement of a suspected spinal injury in shallow water. Students were assisted in this intense process by teacher and local surf lifesaving life member Mr Michael Owen. Mick has mentored and trained dozens of local teenagers through the Bronze Medallion process in his forty years of participation in Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club. Emmanuel College also thanks WSLSC member and alumni Marli Blackney Noter (Class of 2009) for assessing the competency of students. Congratulations to the students who were awarded their Bronze Medallion today. What a wonderful resource you will be to our community patrolling Warrnambool and Port Fairy beaches this Summer. 13.01.2022 WEDNESDAY WHO'S WHO In 1980 our Year 11 CBC boys were making the most of the extra freedoms that being a senior student bestows. Ranging from having access to a radio/cassette player; to being permitted to have their lunch in the Botanical Gardens; to dance lessons with the girls of St Ann’s College. Who can you spot from Year 11B from our CBC Class of 1981?... #wednesdaywhoswho

11.01.2022 R U OK? DAY In 2020 it was especially important for Emmanuel College to celebrate RU OK? Day. It's clearly apparent that due to coronavirus, restrictions and the move to remote learning, that many of us are not feeling okay, but that's okay! The Wellbeing Team, the Year 12 Teaching Team and the College Leadership Staff combined to deliver some special treats to each and every one of our Year 12 students and to all of our staff working at home. The care packages were deliv...ered across the region from Port Fairy to Nirranda, Koroit to Laang, Purnim to Merrivale. The heartfelt gift was an acknowledgment that both virtual learning and remote teaching has its ups and downs. Emmanuel College wanted our Year 12 students to know that the school is here to support them through their studies, and it's staff to know they are very much appreciated. The surprise packages were met with much excitement, being an unexpected difference in the daily grind of studying and working from home. Delivered on a day when the sun was shining, with kindness and appreciation in the air, RU OK? Day felt like a celebration of positivity. We are so proud of all of our students efforts in these unprecedented times. We can't wait to throw open our doors and welcome everyone back. #ruokday2020 #lifeisajuggle See more

11.01.2022 The students of Year 9 Systems Engineering are well on their way with billy cart construction! This Year 9 elective subject builds on skills learnt in Year 8 and being a year older, they are able to utilise some exciting specialist equipment. Over the next weeks the class will prepare and stockpile lots of individual components and then begin to assemble the billy cart using workshop skills and welding. Pictured here is Jaymee Dumesny finishing a steering component and Joseph Conlan using the metal lathe to produce an axle bushing.

10.01.2022 WEDNESDAY WHO'S WHO In 1992, history remembers the political debate and negative sentiment around the relatively recently introduced VCE in Victorian Schools reaching its final heights. Senior Campus Coordinator at the time, Mr Paul Tobias noted its impact, commenting the anti VCE campaign waged in the media did little to increase the confidence of the Year 12 students, however, results indicated some very good performances. Who can you recognise from the Class of 1992, ...who are remembered for their dedication and courage? #wednesdaywhoswho

09.01.2022 In a year that has been disappointing on many levels it’s great to have things to look forward to in 2021. Our fantastic Learning Resource Centre at Emmanuel has already been recognised as one of Australia’s best school Libraries but it is about to reach a whole new level of best! In September the College signed a contract with Fairbrother Construction and the team is already hard at work. In 2021 an expanded and redeveloped Learning Resource Centre will reopen with multi-zo...ned, multi-purpose learning areas catering for individual learners and groups for independent and collaborative work. World renowned Library Consultant, Kevin Hennah, was engaged to guide the LRC team to develop a vision of how the space, technology and collection will evolve in order to maintain relevance and continue to support the educational program into the future. Science facilities at the McAuley Campus are also being expanded and redeveloped in 2021, including the addition of flexible learning spaces. Our College is on a path of continual improvement with clear plans for its future direction. We can’t wait for students to experience learning in these facilities. See more

09.01.2022 On Father's Day today we send our love and prayers to all of the Fathers, Grandfathers, guardians and role models in the Emmanuel College community. We thank them for their wisdom, advice and Dad jokes. We appreciate them for mowing lawns and putting bins out. We love them for being a bank, a taxi, a coach, an umpire, for their involvement in junior extra curricular activities. We applaud them for helping out with remote learning. We miss them if they have passed away. Happy Father's Day to all Dads - our super heroes! Enjoy our video, made with love. Feel free to tag someone you know in it! #HappyFathersDay2020

08.01.2022 WEDNESDAY WHO’S WHO In 2013, Year 8’s were enjoying the school camp in Melbourne. The three day camp involved visits to the Aquarium, Melbourne Zoo, Shrine of Remembrance, Victoria Markets, Sky Deck and the MCG and participated in a number of activities including city orientation, ice skating and a river cruise. Who can you recognise from this group of Year 8 campers, who are now part of the Class of 2017?... #wednesdaywhoswho #emmanuelalumni

08.01.2022 Emmanuel Art students support sustainability! Year 10 students Kiri Hawkes, Caitlin Williams, Halle McDowell, Arley Street and Ruby McKenna showed great enthusiasm, repainting pre-loved canvases, giving each old canvas a second chance to become a brand new artwork for another Emmanuel art student. Each year, sadly, many canvases are left behind in the art room, unwanted by out-going art students. Now, with the generous support of students like the crew pictured here, these c...an be creatively reused and avoid becoming landfill. The students were so enthusiastic with the result, they even preferred the new-look canvases with cool and interesting textures compared to the plain, brand new ones. Well done students on your commitment to reduce, re-use and recycle. See more

07.01.2022 Enjoy watching our Year 12 Merit Badge Assembly where our merit award winners were presented (virtually) with certificates and badges. To have earned a merit badge during the school circumstances of 2020 is exemplary. As a school community we wish our heartfelt congratulations to these students. Our entire Year 12 cohort of 2020 should be so proud of themselves for their dedication and application to their VCE and VCAL studies in difficult circumstances. We look forward to having them all back on site as they countdown their final school days. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAUofWCRjeg&feature=youtu.be

07.01.2022 In Term 4, three of our Year 7 classes moved to new class rooms in the H block whilst our LRC building works continue. The walls were looking very bare upon moving in so 7C English Teacher, Mrs Karen Hetherington set about filling the walls with student work. 7C have been studying the novel "Fog a Dox" by Australian author Bruce Pascoe. As much of this year was spent learning online, this was a good old fashioned paper and pen project. The students were set some group tasks of making posters analysing the main characters and plotting the story line. The resulting work is now filling the walls of Classroom H5 and it looks fabulous. We hope your are proud of your work 7C!

05.01.2022 Cats of Emmanuel on Facebook! Our pets have loved the extra care and attention that comes with us adhering to restrictions and staying at home. We thought you might like to meet some of the cats that are keeping our staff members good company, whilst they work from home. Feel free to share your much loved cat pics with us in the comments! #catsofemmanuel

04.01.2022 WEDNESDAY WHO'S WHO For the last week of Term 3, our Wednesday Who’s Who is a call out for information! Any St Ann’s girls you can name here will help us improve the recording of our history. We believe this photo was taken during the 60s and most likely features girls of the Class of 1971. You might find your mum, your aunty, your sister or your nan! Let’s see how many we can name!... #wednesdaywhoswho

04.01.2022 GRANDPARENTS DAY HITS THE SPOT! One of our absolutely favourite days on the Year 7 calendar each year is when we throw open our doors for Grandparents Day. Sadly, this was yet another event that was unable to proceed in its regular format in 2020 due to Covid 19. Instead our Year 7 classes have been busy rehearsing and preparing a musical piece for their families to view and share with grandparents, special friends and extended family. Here is a sneak peek at Class 7E for... all to enjoy. Remembering that most of the Year 7 Music classes this year have been conducted online, what an amazing effort by our students and Music Department to sound so good! (Keep an eye out for all of the Year 7 Grandparents Day videos which will be released via email directly to parents soon.) https://youtu.be/g0gBCMm23Dk

04.01.2022 WEDNESDAY WHO’S WHO In 2008 the College completed extensive maintenance works across the campuses, one of which was the remodelling of the courtyard now dedicated to the past Principals of St Ann’s, CBC Warrnambool and Emmanuel College. As for our Class of 2008, Year 12 Coordinator at the time, Mr Michael Barling, noted following the graduation dinner. One of the most striking observations from this night was that dance skills in our graduating class have obviously skippe...d a generation. With our graduating parents proving to be just a little too adept, coordinated and graceful on the dancefloor when compared to their children. Keep trying kids! Who do you recognise from Year 12 R9, and have their dancing skills improved? #wednesdaywhoswho #emmanuelalumni #connectedasone

02.01.2022 Despite only finishing school 4 years ago, young farmer and alumni William Rea (Class of 2016) has already caught the attention of the United Dairyfarmers of Victoria (UDV) being named as a 2020 scholarship recipient to participate in an annual study tour of New Zealand. Funded by the Gardiner Dairy Foundation, the UDV Study Tour takes young Victorian dairy industry representatives to New Zealand to expand their knowledge of the local and global industry and develop their lea...dership skills. New Zealand is recognised as the world's largest exporter of dairy products, making the tour a terrific opportunity for developing farmers to see first-hand some world class agri-business practices. William is looking forward to meeting up with other young members of the dairy industry and seeing different farming styles in terms of management and produce. I was chosen for the scholarship because they saw me as a future leader in the dairy industry as I aspire to be a farmer/share farmer in the future. The UDV have offered this as an opportunity to encourage and promote the rewarding careers the dairy industry can offer to the next generation he explains. William is eagerly awaiting to set off to New Zealand, however major national and international events have seen the tour put on hold since February. We were meant to go early in February, but it got postponed because of the bushfires. UDV were carting hay to help. William says. Shortly after, the international travel ban was put in place to restrict the spread of COVID-19. Until we all get the green light to travel again, William continues to start his day at 6:30am to milk on his family’s Allansford farm that he co-manages. I’ve been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to co-manage one of the farms, which has been a great way to grow my business management and planning skills. You never do the same two things every day. You’re always doing something different. You’ve got to jump in and do it all he highlights. #ConnectedAsOne #emmanuelalumni

01.01.2022 Students in Year 9 Art were set the task of designing an artwork on the deck of a skateboard. Part of the task was to investigate the history of skateboard artists and artwork before creating their own unique and wonderful design. "One of my goals for my skateboard deck was to include super bright colours and make the deck look cool, simple and fun, which I feel I achieved. " Amy Ryan 9F "In my skateboard design I added value / contrast and pattern on the bottom side of the... board with the black and white checker pattern." Caitlin Williams 9F "I used Line to create the different sizes of shapes along the path using thick and thin lines. I used a wide range of what I would call happy colours because they’re bright and welcoming and represent how I feel when going to China town with my family." Natalie Wong 9F The completed skateboards look absolutely rad!

01.01.2022 An amazing effort by Emmanuel College teacher and member of the Class of 1985 Mark Owen, who put his body to the test this week by completing an 9.6 hour activity challenge to raise money for brain cancer. Mark, and fellow CBC alumni Peter Day (Class of 1982) walked/ran along the beach from Killarney to Port Fairy, then biked along the rail trail from Port Fairy, via Koroit to Dennington, then kayaked along the Merri River to the breakwater, then ran along the beach to the su...rf club, and finished with a paddle in Lady Bay. If the course itself wasn’t gruelling enough, the boys faced strong winds of up to 26 knots in the early legs of the challenge. However, this didn’t deter them from keeping an even pace to get them to the end. I think we’re in Warrnambool, you’ve got to get in to the wind. I love hills and I love the wind, Mark comments. Mark originally initiated the project as a way to inspire some physical activity in his Year 10 students, who had missed out on their school camp due to COVID restrictions. The plan had been for all Year 10 students to challenge themselves with a 18.8 walk and to raise money for brain cancer charities, such as the Crystal Lee Foundation and the Robert Connor Dawes Foundation. Supporting brain cancer foundations lies at the heart of many of our Year 10 students, of whom many went to school with Pippa Rea at St Joseph’s Primary School before she passed away at age 11. Pippa was the first patient to benefit from the work of Robert Connor Dawes Foundation. Leading Mark and Peter’s support crew was Pippa’s mother, and campaigner, Virginia Rea (St Ann’s Class of 1988). Seeing Virginia so pumped for it, it was uplifting, Mark says. Mark was also joined by students, Jase Napean and Isaac Owen, who made the course seem easy, when they rode their bikes home afterwards. Mark, or Mr Owen, is continuing to encourage his students to set their own physical challenges by completing a further 18 days of training throughout September. Some students are setting the benchmark high, planning to individually accumulate 200km by running throughout the month of September. You can still support Mark in his fundraising efforts during September. Go to: www.connorsrun.com/my-fundraising/16048/team-pippa #connectedasone #emmanuelalumni #connorsrun #rcd

01.01.2022 Religious Education Teacher, Mr John O'Sullivan organised a letter writing project for Emmanuel College students to connect with Lyndoch Living residents. Mr O'Sullivan was delighted with the response when over sixty five students volunteered to participate in the activity. Students wrote letters about themselves, their families, their hobbies and interests to keep the spirits of elderly residents high whilst aged care homes are experiencing lockdown restrictions. The letters were delivered to Lyndoch Living by Mr O'Sullivan and distributed by staff. It's a small act of kindness for our most vulnerable community members during a pandemic that can hopefully make a huge difference. #bekind

01.01.2022 Who are the coolest kids in the school? Well it appears 7I are too cool for school! Mr Tim Cain, Homeroom teacher of 7I used his Homeroom Zoom time as an opportunity to connect with his class with some creative choreography. The result was super cool 7I!
