07.01.2022 Did you know that women and girls in Timor-Leste receive less education than men and boys? Just 20% of women are paid for their labour and most women are denied their voices in decision making which makes them more vulnerable to alarming rates of violence. 59% of women in relationships have experienced partner violence and 80% of women are not paid for their work. Most women in Timor-Leste are excluded from the workforce and do not have the chance to earn a stable income Tha...t’s why @empoweraid have partnered with @proema.timorleste to train and empower young women in the skills of hair and beauty services. At our training salon in Dili, the Pro-Ema girls have learnt skills in line with Australian standards for hairdressing and beauty, and they will be graduating in June this year. They already have a rented premises to train and work from, however there are a number of start-up costs that we need to cover so they can start working once they graduate with the goal of becoming self-sustainable. These costs include: air conditioning unit, a washing machine, small refrigerator, product replenishment supplies and a living allowance for the students until they graduate.
