24.01.2022 PROGESTERONE is an female reproductive hormone that prepares the endometrium for the potential of pregnancy after ovulation. It triggers the lining to thicken to accept a fertilized egg. It also prohibits the muscle contractions in the uterus that would cause the body to reject an egg During the cycle if the woman does not become pregnant, the corpus luteum breaks down, lowering the progesterone levels in the body. This will trigger menstruation to occur. If the woman does ...conceive, progesterone continues to stimulate the body to provide the blood vessels in the endometrium that will nourish the growing baby Women who have low levels of progesterone may have abnormal menstrual cycles or can to struggle to conceive because the progesterone does not trigger the proper environment for an embryo to grow. Signs of low progesterone include: Abnormal uterine bleeding Irregular or missed periods Spotting and abdominal pain during pregnancy Frequent miscarriages PMS with breast tenderness and anxiety. Chronic stress is also a big contributor to progesterone levels. When your body is stressed, it works to produce higher levels of the hormone cortisol which manages stress in your body. Because progesterone is the precursor to cortisol, when cortisol levels increase, progesterone levels decrease. If there is too much stress in a woman’s life this can lead to progesterone deficiency, causing the above hormonal symptoms and also may be a contributing factor to anxiety Beautiful Art by @vellarosaart

20.01.2022 Take care of yourself The most important relationship is first the one you have with yourself This relationship is based on how well we can connect with what we need, how we show up in the world and connect with our external environment. Whether that be with food, stress, relationships and so on. Often this is learnt behaviour from our childhood and early experiences in life. Somewhere along the way we lose touch with our inner world and therefore become unable to listen to... the signs and symptoms that the body might give us either emotionally or physically. These are my top tips that I have found useful! * Schedule and plan your time in a week. Make space around things that you need to do. Don’t fill your day with a never-ending list. In this weekly plan make time for the following: food shopping, meal preparation, exercise. * Make time for 20 min daily meditation, reflection, podcast, bath, reading in the sun or whatever else it is you like to do that relaxes you. * Get to bed early most nights, 10pm at the latest! * Move your body and exercise at least 3-4 times per week. * Read books, listen to podcasts and watch less TV. * Watch your self-talk, is it negative? Does it blame others for how you feel? Try to think daily about the good things you have in life and feel gratitude for these. * Eat a good breakfast, every single day. * Eat a beautiful home cooked meal on a Sunday night to have good energy for your Monday morning. When you take care of yourself, then you can give more to others and the areas of your life that need your time and energy. Visual art: @visualpotions

19.01.2022 "A wound is the place where light enters you" - Rumi So far 2020 seems to be the year that all of the darkness within our world and within ourselves is coming to the surface. To live more in truth means that we must break free of any illusion that we carry in belief, thought or perception. Let's be honest, we are so good at being so busy that in the past we may not have ever allowed our illusions to be shattered. When everything is stripped back or material wealth has bee...n lost, are you happy with just you? Now is the time to get really clear and make adjustments so that we never forget the lessons of this challenging year Can't wait to see all of our beautiful patients back in the clinic again soon x See more

15.01.2022 CLOVES The oldest recorded medical use of cloves,240 BC, comes from China, where it was used as a remedy for diarrhea and bad breath. Clove has antiseptic properties and is considered to be useful for infections of both bacterial and viral nature. Research shows that the essential oil in Cloves is effective against bacteria such as Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, and Pneumococcus. Cloves are beneficial for the digestive system by reducing cramps and can help to ease flatulence The astringent properties of the tannins present in Cloves might be useful for treating diarrhea. * Try using this spice in your cooking or chai tea! Only use herbal medicine tinctures under guided supervision of a trained Herbalist.

15.01.2022 Choline and Pregnancy Choline supports the brain function of both you and your growing baby, studies have found that it can also enhance your baby’s neurological development throughout infancy. Choline deficiency has been linked with neural tube defects in children, adequate choline intake throughout pregnancy is essential for ensuring the healthy development of your baby’s brain and spinal cord. Choline is present in high amounts within animal products such as meat, eggs and fish. If you eat a vegetarian or vegan diet, these plant-based foods contain lower levels of choline but it can be found in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus and spinach.

13.01.2022 Christmas digestive tips! It is so easy to overindulge at this time of year. With all the Xmas catch ups you can nibble and drink your way to bloating, flatulence and constipation. Here are a few of my favorite tips: Drink Apple cider vinegar in water either before or after Xmas drinks/eats Drink lots of water in general... Buy some liver detox herbal teas: Dandelion root, Milk Thistle, Burdock and add some peppermint or lemonbalm for taste. (Or contact your Herbalist for a special liver/digestive tonic!) Take Magnesium and B vitamins Make up a warm drink using the following: tepasoon turmeric 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar Squeeze of lemon juice teaspoon honey Pinch cayenne pepper Image: le.monadas.bohopicnics

13.01.2022 Rehmannia This beautiful plant makes it’s way into many of my herbal tonics. It has many beneficial actions that support the body especially in this modern, at times, crazy world! I will turn to Rehmannia when a patient may show signs of burn out due to stress, inflammation and slow digestive motility. Rehmannia has been shown to be beneficial in the following clinical presentations:... Menopausal symptoms Rhuematiod arthritis Depletion due to stress and when in need of adrenal function support Insomnia Constipation As always it is recommended that you take herbal medicine under the guidance of a trained herbalist! Rehmannia is contraindicated in patients taking therapeutic immunosuppressives for treatment of autoimmune disease. See more

13.01.2022 CHAMOMILE One of the beautiful well-known benefits of chamomile is its ability to ease a troubled mind, whether it’s related to stress, anxiety, or depression. A staple in the current climate I would say! Having trouble with sleep? Chamomile acts as mild sedative, the flavonoid apigenin found in chamomile binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the brain, helping to promote sleep. As well as being wonderful in relieving stress, chamomile is also known for beneficial effe...cts towards digestion. It contains anodyne compounds, which are both anti-spasmodic and carminative to the gut. It may be helpful to relieve a whole range of gastrointestinal complaints, including constipation and diarrhea, intestinal spasms and stomach pains. Chamomile is a key herb in supporting the gut-brain connection due to its mind-relaxing properties and support to the parasympathetic nervous system/Vagus Nerve. Which when in balance will positively impact the way we process and digest our food. See more

12.01.2022 6 key functional steps for healthy GUT function: 1. Salivary amylase secreted by the salivary glands helps to initiate carbohydrate digestion, so make sure you chew your food properly and slowly! 2. Good levels of Hydrochloric acid (HCL) in the stomach are needed to break down protein and for anti-microbial action. Also needed to ensure adequate bile release from the gall bladder! Manage stress and ensure good levels of B6 and zinc to support HCL levels!... 3. Bile release from the gall bladder is important for healthy fat metabolism and peristalsis. Step 2 helps with step 3! 4. Healthy structure of the small intestine lining, villi and micro villi are important for carbohydrate metabolism, immune activation and absorption of nutrients. This means gut integrity is important, no leaky gut please! Your gut health practitioner can help you work out if this is an issue. 5. Healthy gut bacteria is essential for healthy immune response, protection from free radicals and breakdown of nutrients. Eat lots of probiotic rich foods, we love @gagasforguthealth 6. A healthy bowel function includes a transit time of around 14 hours and at least 1 bowel motion per day that sinks, is medium brown in colour and is fully formed in one piece!! If you are having issues here and the obvious steps like increased fiber and water is not helpful, reach out!! We love your guts Image: Gaga's Gut Loving Ferments

10.01.2022 Morning Rituals How you start your day can either contribute to the flow or the chaos you may experience. If you start your day in 'fight/flight' rushing to get out the door without time for breakfast already your body and nervous system is surging with cortisol and adrenaline. ... Consider the following to enjoy a day that feels productive and flows: 1. Go to bed 30 min earlier the night before. 2. Get up 30 min earlier. 3. Drink a large glass of water on rising. 4. If time allows, move your body in a way that you enjoy for at look least 20mins. 5. Eat a nutritious and balanced breakfast. Plan for this so you are not trying to think of what to have in the moment. Other things I personally enjoy!: Journaling Watering the garden Listening to nature sounds via Insight Timer If you can start your day relaxed and calm, it can change the flow of your whole day! @inthebarrelphoto

10.01.2022 For us Melbourne folk, we are now a few days in to our second lockdown due to Covid. Yes, it is disappointing to be here again when we thought we were getting some sense of normalcy back. My heart goes out to those facing increased hardship due to the current circumstances. After letting myself feel my emotions rise up I am now ready to put a plan into place about what to do with this time! For me this is a time to sit down with a warm drink and write, draw or work on other ...projects such as content for various technology platforms or learn a new skill or take an online course. You could consider starting a journal, a blog or learn to broaden your cooking skills. Learn to meditate or get out into the garden. In the past we spend so much time running from here to there that we have forgotten how much joy and contentment can be found in creative outlets. See more

08.01.2022 "I tune out of all the noise and confusion of this world and tune into a space of infinite peace and love inside my heart" - unknown. The journey inward can lead to more peace and contentment if you are brave enough to face what is beneath the surface. When we can see that the outer reality is a reflection of the inner world we can begin to tend to the wounds that bind us to this reality that we may not enjoy. This is work worth doing because your peace and contentment is worth everything xx

02.01.2022 APPRECIATION POST!! I love when I get patients feedback that their Doctor or specialist has approved of what I am doing to support the patient’s health. This has been especially apparent in the area of GUT HEALTH.The Complete Micorbiome Mapping test seems to get the tick of approval because it is evidence based! Want to get to the root cause of your gut issue? Have you been to more than one health practitioner for answers?? Let me tell you a little secret The FODMAPS diet ...is not always the answer and, in any case, it should be only part of a gut healing program. You need to understand the full picture and uncover issues within the functionality of your gut and within the microbiome. You need answers and proof!! Contact Emma to discuss further in a 10 min complementary phone chat on 9893 5514 or book online: https://www.empoweredhealth.com.au/

01.01.2022 LIBIDO through Menopause You have the ability to feel vitality at any age. This includes your sexual energy. If you are peri-menopausal or post-menopausal that does not mean that you have to let go of your vitality or libido. You just need to know how to support your body through this transition. Your cyclic oestrogen is declining, so to do other hormones like testosterone and progesterone. Your cortisol levels rise and this can be a potential reason for weight gain around ...the middle, low sex drive, insomnia and low energy. I like to recommend the following nutritional supports to assist this hormonal transition: Red Maca powder @formulahealth Greens Boost @formulahealth Magnesium and Activated B vitamins Omega Fatty Acids and Evening primrose Herbal Medicine: this can assist in providing a buffer for declining hormones with no side effects! See a herbalist (like me!) to have a mix made up specific to your needs! Art by: Women of Illustration
