22.01.2022 Great news about Spinal Discs! A study by Belav (2017) found that running is actually beneficial for your spinal discs. It had long been thought that the forces on the spine from running would cause wear and tear on your spinal discs. The new evidence found that the disc tissues adapt to exercises such as fast walking and running. The spinal discs were found to be more hydrated and slightly thicker! Zhong (2017) reviewed 11 studies and found that in 66% of patients who had a bulging spinal disc who received conservative treatment (that is no surgery!) that the disc reabsorbed. More research is needed in this area but the take home message is that many disc bulges resolve without surgery!

14.01.2022 Use it or Lose it! As we age there is a gradual decline in muscle mass and strength and this is accelerated after the age of 60. This could lead to a higher risk of falls, difficulty walking and a reduced ability to perform everyday tasks around the house. As the muscle is lost it will be replace by fat which can clearly be seen on the MRI. But when masters athletes in their 60s and 70s were studied who had maintained an active intense exercise program, it was found they... had very little loss in muscle mass!! There are significant health and social costs associated with loss of muscle mass and strength and ultimately this may lead to admission to nursing homes when a persons function declines. So, the phrase use it or lose it is true and all the more reason to keep active as we age!

13.01.2022 Should Surgery be the last option? Knee and Hip replacements cost the system over $2 billion per year in Australia and a Victorian study found that between 1994 to 2014, the number of hip replacements performed went up 175 per cent, while knee replacements went up 285 per cent. Insight had a great discussion recently which highlighted the role that Physiotherapy can play in helping people to relieve symptoms without surgery! https://www.sbs.com.au/ne/insight/tvepisode/joint-operation

13.01.2022 The majority of our clientele at ninth wave are over 30 years old. Getting older does not mean you cannot train heavy. Getting older does not automatically lead... to the weakening of the body. It does however mean form, technique need to be prioritised and programming needs to be smarter, rather than simply chasing more plates in the bar. At 65 years, Alan is a prime example of this. With his willingness to work hard and our coaches smart programming for the past 3 years, he is now squatting heavy no matter what the tempo and how long the pause, and deadlifting 130kgs for reps with no injuries our niggles. Getting people to their goals without injury is or priority. When will you start? It is never too late until you say that you will do it tomorrow. See more

12.01.2022 Key Points in Tendon Rehabilitation Pain reduces the elastic capacity of the tendon which reduces performance Excessive or high intensity training may induce tendon overload... Management must include strategies to control pain and reduce aggravating loads Gradually increase the load as you progress through rehabilitation If you feel more pain in your tendon the day after exercising then reduce the load!

10.01.2022 Dont Ignore that sore Hip! One of the most important areas of your body to not ignore pain!! Letting hip pain get out of control can lead to significant issues with mobility and that can be a very slippery slope!! ... Some of the conditions we specialise treating: Bursitis: Pain giving you trouble sleeping on your Hip at night Tendinopathy: Pain into the buttock that is constantly aching Impingement: Pinching in the hip area Osteoarthritis: Aching, difficulty walking and putting on socks in the morning When you leave pain untreated, the muscles become overactive resulting in locking in the joint and accelerating the damage to your vital hip structures. There is good evidence that reduced hip strength and hip pain or arthritis are risk factors for falls in the elderly population and if you have impaired walking and balance then there is 10 times higher risk of having a fall. In people who required hospitalization for falls, a study found that 51% of patients were discharged to a nursing home. Bottom line: Dont ignore your pain until its too late. Your mobility is the most important thing

The study followed 50 injured athletes and found that starting physiotherapy 2 days after injury instead of waiting 9 days reduced the time to pain free recovery and return to sport by 3 weeks! ... The take home message is that early rehab when you have an acute injury will get you back to sport sooner!

04.01.2022 Preventing Running Injuries A significant factor leading to running injuries is a rapid increase in the amount of training, this is because soft tissues have not built up the capacity to tolerate the increased load. If you are a runner and planning to enter your first half marathon or maybe you are just getting into running then an assessment by a physiotherapist can be helpful to determine any bio-mechanical factors that need to be addressed. ... When injured you only need to stop running when it will have a negative effect on the length of recovery, otherwise the break should be as short as possible to maintain fitness and the load capacity of soft tissues. A good measure for runners is to monitor symptoms, if pain does not settle within 24 hours then running distance should be reduced. A physiotherapist can also advise on strength training and changes to running technique to allow you to continue running while recovering from Injury.
