24.01.2022 A big congratulations to @unstudio_architecture and @coxarchitecture for winning Melbournes landmark Southbank Precinct overhaul. Their vision for the $2 billion project includes a pair of twisted towers called Green Spine. As the largest single-phase project in the history of Victoria, Australia, the Green Spine is designed as a state-of-the-art, mixed-use environment centered around innovation in architecture and design.... Green Spine will feature greenery and outdoor spaces realised in natural materials, while the towers other glazed facades will punctuated by french balconies towards the base, transitioning to shading fins as the building rises. A residential tower soars to 356 meters, crowned by a publicly-accessible Future Botanic Garden, while a hotel and office tower reaches 252 meters. Green Spine will stand more than 30 metres higher than Australias tallest building the 322.5-metre high Q1 tower in Gold Coast, and 50 metres higher than the Eureka Tower Melbournes current tallest building. #melbourne #architecture #greeneryinthecity #worldbeaters

19.01.2022 Energy Saving Tips Series With energy bills ever increasing we thought wed share some simple and easy ways to reduce the bulls and keep more money in your pocket for the things you actually want! Tip 1: Set the fridge just right.... Every degree lower a fridge or freezer is set uses 5% more energy. Ideally, set the fridge between 3 to 4C and the freezer between -15 to -18C. Speaking of fridges, Berlin-based artist Ralf Schmerberg constructed a giant igloo make from 322 old refrigerators to raise awareness of the need for increased energy efficiency. #fridgloo #sometimesitsthesmallthings #energytips

17.01.2022 Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing an overview of how we can assist builders, future home-buyers or renovators in making the most out of your design choices to optimise thermal comfort, lower energy bills & greenhouse gas emissions. Thermal comfort is achieved if most occupants do not require any artificial heating or cooling to feel comfortable with the current temperature in the dwelling. Hello, cheaper power bills! Design objectives and responses are unique to eac...h of the eight main climate zones in Australia as defined by the National Construction Code. The following provides a brief description of each NCC climate zone as pictured: Climate zone 1 - high humidity summer, warm winter Climate zone 2 - warm humid summer, mild winter Climate zone 3 - hot dry summer, warm winter Climate zone 4 - hot dry summer, cool winter Climate zone 5 - warm temperate Climate zone 6 - mild temperate Climate zone 7 - cool temperate Climate zone 8 - alpine NatHERS divides these climate zones even further into 69 regions which are built into all NatHERS accredited software and are important for accurately calculating the thermal performance of homes modelled with the software. Passive design utilises natural sources such as the sun and cooling breezes in combination with the orientation of your building on its site, shading, insulation and the design of the building itself including the roof, walls, windows and floors. Stay tuned as we explore the different effects of design choices on your thermal comfort. #thermalcomfort #energyefficiency #energyadvanceau

16.01.2022 Deciding on a roof colour and material has a significant impact on the appearance of a house. When we assess a building, these choices can have a surprising amount of impact on the thermal performance. In the hotter climate zones from the North Coast of NSW upwards, a light coloured roof will provide heat reflection resulting in greater thermal performance of the household where lowering the cost of cooling is the priority. Whereas southern states have the primary concern of ...heating in Winter, a dark coloured roof is desired to help soak up the suns heat and release heat into the evenings. While this is fairly common knowledge that dark absorbs heat and light reflects it, the type of roof and insulation you select also plays an important role. Tiled roofing allow for air leakage and water & dust vapour to flow into the roof space, which decreases the effectiveness of ceiling insulation and can cause condensation problems later on. However, it also provides greater sound insulation, radiates heat when the temperate drops and has a greater lifespan especially in coastal zones in comparison to steel. Products like roof sarking can be installed to protect from the wind & heavy rain, improve thermal performance and help your house resist bushfire ember attack. Colorbond roofs have a wider range of light colours, lower minimum roof pitches and are sealed against air and rain, providing higher protection especially if you are building in a bushfire prone area and greatly reduce air leakage. Heat also dissapates quicker with a Colorbond roof, which will impact differently according to your climate zone goals. Anticon and other roof blankets can be added to metal roofing to reduce any condensation, increase the roofs acoustic & thermal performance and fire resistance. With so many styles, colours and upgrades available, one easy way to decide is this: Do you like the sound of rain on a tin roof?

15.01.2022 Clear solar panel windows are the future thanks to this Aussie company! Perth based company ClearVue has developed technology allowing visible light to pass through a pane of glass, while the invisible wavelengths of light are deflected to the edges of the glass where they are converted into electricity. Researchers from Edith Cowan University are conducting scientific-technical study on the global-first clear solar glass structure at the Warwick Grove Shopping Centre in Pert...h. The Northern entrance door atrium has been updated with 18 ClearVue PV triple-glazed low-e power generating IGU panels which are providing power for lighting in the atrium and outside signage, with leftover energy charging a battery. Our technology presents a paradigm shift in the way glass will be used in building construction, automobiles, agriculture and specialty products. Glass will no longer be just a component of construction but also a renewable energy resource. - Victor Rosenberg, Executive Chairman Solar energy could power the entire world, but it accounts for only 0.2%, with the bulk of the worlds energy requirement being met by non renewable resources at 78%. With businesses and individuals across the globe looking for new ways to reduce their carbon footprint and harvest renewable energy sources, this technology could transform the way the world uses glass in residential and commercial buildings. #renewableenergy #solar #clearvue #futureofenergy #australia #innovation

11.01.2022 Thousands of South Australian households now have access to $100 million in State Government subsidies to pay for the installation of home battery systems. The Scheme will directly reduce electricity costs for the 40,000 households that purchase a subsidised household energy storage system. The installation of the systems will reduce demand on the network (especially at peak periods) and lower prices for all South Australians.... The subsidy varies according to the size of the battery and is capped at a maximum $6,000. A home battery system allows you to store excess power generated from your solar panel installation for later use. This means, for example, that if you are out during the day, you could store unused power in your battery and then draw on it in the evening. By doing this you save money on your energy costs and bills. It also helps to reduce demand on the electricity grid. #solarpower #yourhomeisapowerplant #thewayofthefuture

10.01.2022 The CSIRO had launched a new data portal to track residential energy efficiency progress to support the next wave of sustainable homes as part of the national science agencys centralising of a vast amount of energy efficiency data that will underpin key decision making, training and awareness. Around 11.4% of Australias emissions can be attributed to households, and with construction continuing at a steady pace, the AHD Portal can pinpoint where energy efficiency efforts ...are on track, and where they may need increased focus. The Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS), a measurement and compliance system for energy efficiency administered by the Australian Government, has provided the data for the portal. 195,000 new homes were built in Australia in the past year; Overall, Australian homes are increasing in size, with an average floor area of 132 m2 (this includes houses and apartments); The average newly-constructed home had an energy rating of 6.2 stars. This is an improvement since the introduction of star ratings in 2001, when the average home was estimated at 1.8 Stars. This translates to an annual saving of approximately $560 in energy bills and 2.3 tonnes of CO2 equivalent (tCO2-e) in greenhouse emissions per house. #energyefficiency #nathers #green #anotherstepforward

05.01.2022 There are so many examples of stunning architecture around the world that are testaments to humanitys creativity and ambition. But not every imaginative design comes to fruition. In fact, some of the most unique and inspirational architecture in history never made it off the drawing board. Here are seven city structures that you might not be able to visit but can finally see brought to life in all their glory. ... 1. The Triumphant Elephant (Paris, France) Everyone who has ever visited Paris has seen the famous Arc de Triomphe but it almost looks dull compared to what could have stood in its place. In 1758, architect Charles Ribert drew up imaginative plans to build a giant elephant, which visitors could climb into via a spiral staircase. 2. The Illinois (Chicago, USA) Frank Lloyd Wright went above and beyond with his Chicago tower proposal, produced around 1957. The mile-high tower was expected to provide housing for over 100,000 people, fitting almost 20,000 cars and 180 helicopters. 3. The Walking City (London, England) City designs dont come much more futuristic than Ron Herrons Walking City, which was published in the mid-1960s. The buildings were pods on legs, which would be artificially intelligent and able to walk to wherever they were needed, even connecting with other cities, if necessary. 4. Hotel Attraction (New York, USA) Antoni Gaudis magical architecture can be seen all around Barcelona, and in the early 20th century, a couple of businessmen from the Big Apple wanted to bring some to their city. Gaudi designed Hotel Attraction, with conical towers and a star-shaped sphere. #whatcouldvebeen #bizarrouniverse #architecture #amazingimaginations Credit: @OnStrideFinancial

04.01.2022 Taking into account features such as the sun and wind is important when deciding where to position your home. Homes should face north or as close to north in all climates except tropical areas. This gives the structure the most exposure to the beneficial winter sun, and walls and windows can be easily shaded during the summer months. The NatHERS software tool allows for variation in shading cast by eaves, pergolas and surrounding buildings year round. Solar access is how much... your north windows and roof get sun exposure. Windows that face the north allow greater solar access, making your home warmer in the winter months. Is it most beneficial for the living, dining and kitchen areas to have north facing windows. The ability to chose a location for the dwelling with a clear space in front of your north windows is affected by the size and shape of the lot. Preserving this area north of the windows is vital to providing good solar access to the north windows. Windows allow natural light, views, and fresh air. They can also improve thermal comfort year-round if they are well-planned. North facing windows with effective solar access can diminish winter warming bills by up to 25%, and outer shading can obstruct 80% of summer heat increase through windows. Winter heat loss can be minimised through double or low-e glazing, while summer heat gain can be minimised by external shading and suitable sizing & placement of windows.

03.01.2022 Perth company @clearvuetechnologieslimited has developed world-first clear solar-glass. This breakthrough is a potential game-change to solar harvesting not just in Australia but around the globe. The glass is embedded with nanoparticles that work to draw out 90 per cent of the ultraviolet (UV) and infrared rays from the sun, and transfer those rays to solar cells embedded on the edge of the glass panels. The rays are converted into energy, while allowing 70 per cent of visib...le light to pass through. One square metre of the glass can produce up to 30 watts of power. With further R&D, they expect generation to reach 50W per square metre. Combining this technology with the advancements in solar batteries and existing roof-top PV Cells could eventually turn every Australian home into a mini Solar Power-Station. #solarpower #thefutureisbright

01.01.2022 Decreasing our Carbon Footprint Energy Tip 2: Energy Vampire Devices Despite decreasing 68 per cent in the past decade, standby power is responsible for 5.9 per cent of Australias total residential electricity consumption. ... According to the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, standby power consumption costs the average household almost $100 per year. In addition to the standby cost, these hungry devices are also responsible for almost 2.6 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. The Takeaway? Even though it may be a hassle, switch you applicances off at the wall when not in use. Developing this simple habit could drastically reduce your monthly bills. 01.01.2022 With Christmas almost upon us, we thought wed share our top ways to save a little money on your energy bills and have a positive impact on the environment over the holiday period: Replace your old lights with LED. They use 70% less energy than traditional bulbs and last longer. Solar and battery operated lights are becoming increasingly popular and are ideal for those places where you dont have access to a socket. Putting your lights on a timer or is a great option too.... Limit the times you open your oven door. We know its tempting to keep having a peek at your Christmas ham, but keep the oven door shut as much as you can. Its also a good idea to make large batches of food in advance. Dont put the oven on just to make a few mince pies - stick something else in there with them too. If you are using the stove, keeping a lid on pots uses up to 70% less energy. Use the BBQ whenever possible Plan to cook and eat outdoors as much as possible during the holiday period. Itll help reduce energy costs and provide a great festive atmosphere. When youre indoors try to keep the temperature somewhere close to 25 degrees, as each degree of cooling can add up to 10% to your running costs. Defrosting and freezing food Defrost food naturally overnight rather than relying on the microwave to do the job and allow warm foods to cool down before sticking them in the fridge and the freezer. Switching off appliances Dont forget to switch appliances off at the wall when youre not using them or before you go away for the holidays. Despite decreasing 68 per cent in the past decade, standby power is responsible for 5.9 per cent of Australias total residential electricity consumption. #christmasiscoming #energyefficiency #christmaslights
