17.01.2022 OUR PEOPLE | MotherSafe is a State-wide service where we take calls from consumers and healthcare professionals regarding concerns about exposures during pregn...ancy and breastfeeding. By training Im a paediatrician and I have an interest in birth defects and their prevention. I completed a two year fellowship in Toronto at a service that was similar to MotherSafe, so we modeled it on that. Ive seen an increase in women and health professionals awareness of the need to plan pregnancies, so they can address concerns about potential medications before getting pregnant. Women with underlying medical problems who are often given quite scary advice about not taking medication might actually compromise their own health because they think its safer. That may not necessarily be the case. MotherSafe is all about making sure people understand that there are options and to seek advice so they can make informed choices , Debra Kennedy, Director, MotherSafe, Royal Hospital for Women. https://www.seslhd.health.nsw.gov.au//services-clinics/dir Royal Hospital for Women Foundation

11.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS FROM THE TEAM It is with great regret we announce that Dr Robert Favaloro has officially advised of his retirement. Dr Bob has been the heart and soul of Engadine Family Medical Practice for over 40 years and will be sorely missed by both patients and staff alike. This most certainly marks the end of an era and we wish this very special doctor and his wife Gail all the best in the coming years. Dr Maneesha Kapuwatte and Dr Wah Khaing have recently joined the practice and we welcome them to help take up the mantle.

10.01.2022 FACE MASKS AND CORONA VIRUS (COVID-19) | NSW Health does not recommend the routine use of face masks in the community. People who have possible symptoms of coro...navirus or who are in a period of home isolation should wear a surgical face mask when seeking medical advice and when in the same room as another person. You can protect yourself against coronavirus in the same way as for any respiratory infection by: making sure to clean your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub covering your nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing with tissue or a flexed elbow avoiding close contact with anyone with cold or flu-like symptoms. You can find out more information by visiting NSW Health - Novel coronavirus https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//dise/Pages/coronavirus.aspx or calling the National Coronavirus Health Information Line 1800 020 080

08.01.2022 OUR PEOPLE | I started my nurses training at St George Hospital in January 1978. Ive been working here on and off ever since. I worked in the ICU for 25 year...s and loved it. Now, Im a Patient Safety Manager, working in the Clinical Practice Improvement Unit (CPIU). Our team monitors patient safety issues and the quality of patient care. The team helps with the investigation of serious clinical incidents and also manages complaints. We try to make sure that the organisation is doing the right thing. Were looking at what we can do to improve to keep our patients safe. I have seen many changes in my time, including the move from paper-based to electronic records and the subsequent benefits. I also saw the transition from hospital-based training for nurses to university-based training. Some of the nurses I worked with who came out of university-based training were fantastic. I liked their critical thinking. Over the years Ive been a patient here myself, as well as several of my family. I had both my children here and have seen a couple of my grandchildren born here. I think the people and teams I have worked with have been absolutely brilliant, not just the clinical teams, but also in the CPIU. I like to help people. Thats what has kept me here. Marie Hodgetts, Patient Safety Manager, Clinical Practice Improvement Unit, St George Hospital. #HeartofCaring #OurPeople St George Hospital, celebrating 125 years of service to our community.

07.01.2022 Dont put off medical appointments. Hospitals and GP clinics are safe, and here to care for you and your family. If you do have any concerns about COVID-19 just ring ahead beforehand and make sure you get the attention you need.

06.01.2022 MOSQUITO WARNING | High tides and dry weather have resulted in an increase in saltmarsh mosquito numbers along the Georges River, prompting a health warning to ...residents and visitors to the area to cover up. Saltmarsh mosquitoes are potential carriers of the Ross River and Barmah Forest viruses and routine mosquito monitoring by the SESLHD Public Health Unit this week has found the numbers of mosquitoes in the area to be very high. While there have been no locally-acquired cases of the viruses confirmed to date, people need to take due precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes.
