24.01.2022 A great Mothers Day for Tess as Tessie wins on debut at Spreyton. Well done Nan! Another highlight was Sanction King for Vu and Amanda who have been long time stable owners. It was a nice double for the stable on Sunday.
24.01.2022 The stable enjoyed a successful day at Spreyton today with the Larter family and their talented gelding Fragment first cab off the rank scoring again after his good win at the track a fortnight ago. His record of 6 wins and 7 placings from only 15 starts is an example of the quality of horses bred by the very successful Woodlawn Park Stud team. Well done again. Next up it was 4 year old I Am Invincible mare Garland winning in a surprisingly determined fashion , after lookin...g as though shed run 2nd at best very close to the winning post. Originally bought by the Armidale Stud team as a broodmare prospect , Garland will continue racing for some time yet. Congrats to Craig Newitt on both winners and a big thank you to our stable apprentice Breaana Smith who has done so much work with Garland. The Whishaw clan were at Spreyton in force today including Ros who sought out Craig to say a big well done You cant beat a winner to make people smile! See more
22.01.2022 Champion galloper Admiral overseeing the next bunch of racetrack stars in the early days of his retirement. We are hoping he can pass on some of his champion qualities to these youngsters. #Admiral #champ
22.01.2022 A great Mother’s Day for Tess as Tessie wins on debut at Spreyton. Well done Nan! Another highlight was Sanction King for Vu and Amanda who have been long time stable owners. It was a nice double for the stable on Sunday.
21.01.2022 Its been a newsworthy 5 days with our stable apprentice Breaana Smith winning her first race of the new season on Sunday at Spreyton aboard Gee Gees Jet. Well done Breaana ! Then yesterday Barry made the trip to Warrnambool to see our great Admiral who has been in Victoria for some months under the brilliant care of Dr Brian Anderson pictured here with him. Initially with Brian at Ballarat , Admiral had a small issue rectified several months ago and he is now in just fantast...ic condition under the watchful eye of Brian and Warrnambool based Matthew Williams. Yesterdays trip to Victoria was the first time Barry and Admiral had been together for quite a while but seeing the horse in such great order made the long drive from Melbourne worthwhile Now back under saddle Admiral feels like a 3 year old hes so well and loving it according to Matt today. Admiral returns home on Wednesday and will join Derasa Kwai Chillout and Jubilance who all return to the stable next Monday. Spring and summer racing isnt far away now! See more
21.01.2022 The $50,000 Tasbred 2YO on May 19th is the target for smart filly Deroche who resumed with an easy win in Launceston on Sunday. Starting a hot favourite, Deroch...e sat outside the leader Dixies Boy before surging clear on the home turn to win comfortably from Still A Star and Fitzwilliam. Deroche, by boom sire Needs Further has now raced five times for three wins and two minor placings. Shell go to that $50,000 race in a fortnight and then shell go to the paddock and have nine weeks off and then we will get her ready for her 3YO campaign, trainer Barry Campbell said after the race. Top jockey Craig Newitt had little to worry about during the 1200-metre event. She came out of the gates like a bullet and as soon as I asked her to just come back off the leaders she really settled nicely and she had the race won a long way out. In a warning for her opposition on Sunday week, Newitt predicts the flashy chestnut will improve from the run. Deroche was one of three winners for Campbell, he also saddled up Axion in a BM64 over 1600 metres and Enzian who returned to the winners list in a 1200-metre BM64. Needs Further also finished the day with a treble and sired a trifecta when Buzzered won from Full Knots Ahead and Oh So Needy. Buzzered has proved a difficult horse to train but it seems Group One Jockey Anthony Darmanin may have the key to the 3YO. Weve had other jockeys on her in the past and she wont run a drum (placing) for anyone but Darma and I think its because he nurses her and keeps her happy, trainer Cameron Thompson told Tasracing after the win. Pint-sized mare Coronation Pia scored a narrow but impressive win for Troy Baker and fiancee Siggy Carr early in the day while 8YO Step The Pedal showed she might not be ready to retire with a last-to-first win in the 1400-metre BM72.
21.01.2022 So many words could be said about these two grand Ladies.. but ..the only words we will use..Is "We Love Them"..xxx
20.01.2022 Congratulations are in order to the team at Armidale Stud on the big win by their 4 year old mare Garland at Spreyton today. By boom sire I Am Invincible, Garland has only relatively recently arrived in Tassie after her early racing in NSW and Queensland. Purchased by David and Rhiannon Whishaw to join their extensive Armidale Stud broodmare line up Garland looks to have more wins in store before taking up the next phase of her career. Whilst on the subject of congratulations a big well done ( again ) to our rising star stable apprentice Breaana Smith who is now becoming quite familiar with the winners circle these days after yet another winner today at Spreyton. Breaana is fast developing into a stylish and very successful young rider. A big well done today from all the Ensign Lodge team
20.01.2022 It was one of those memorable days at Spreyton today when our stable apprentice Breaana Smith rode her first winner. Well done ! With only a handful of race rides to date and with the great sense to regularly ask for guidance from Craig Newitt over the last few months Breaana rode Kanji for Kaye Milne to win the second race at Spreyton today and showed that her race riding skills are coming along well. Congratulations on the milestone and a day youll remember forever Breaana.... Great job ! Were all so happy for you. Two races later and it was Craig Newitts turn to salute the judge again on our talented 3yo filly Enzian. Making it 3 wins from 4 starts this preparation, Craig and Enzian sure know how to find the line. The daughter of Armidale Studs very successful Needs Further, Enzian looks set to reach higher grade races later in the year. Well done Bill Hayes and Margo Smart on racing yet another really nice horse together and to breeder Jenny Watson who sure knows how to breed a winner. See more
19.01.2022 TRAINER Barry Campbell saddled up odds-on favourite Balearic (pictured) in a class two handicap (1400m) in Hobart on Sunday but before the race, he was unsure w...hether the price was a true indication of his winning chances. Balearic started at the cramped odds of $1.50 but as most of his best form had been produced on wet tracks, Campbell was wary of the firm rack that had been upgraded from a good 4 to a good 3 by the time Balearics race was due to be run. But the Hall of Fame trainers concerns were unwarranted as the gelded son of Smart Missile had no trouble with the surface and cruised to an effortless 1-1/4 length victory over His Nibs ($15) and second-favourite Ivoryman ($3.10). You always worry when tracks get upgraded in the firmer direction when you know your horse prefers rain-affected ground but we obviously had no need to worry, Campbell said. Craig (Newitt) said the horse let down really well and was not troubled by the firmness of the surface. Its nice to know because we could run into more firm tracks in Hobart if we get a really hot summer. Balearic is one of three horses Campbell had come into his stable recently that used to reside with Chris Waller in Sydney. Newitt was full of praise for the four-year-old gelding. Like Barry, I was a bit concerned how he might handle the track but he was really good on top of the ground and finished the race off like a horse going places, Newitt said. Campbell said he was unsure of where Balearic would appear next but suggested me might be tried over 1600 metres.
19.01.2022 Our 3yo filly Derasa ran at Flemington yesterday and did a very good job at her first try up the Flemington 1,000 metres straight. Craig Newitt was full of praise for her effort running 4th of the 15 runners defeated by less than half a length and post race commented that she looked for the bend more than once in the run. The race was run in quick overall time of 56.79 seconds with the last 600 metres run in 32.73 Thats motoring ! The filly comes home now for a couple of weeks and might return for one more run at the end of the month. Thanks to Joanne Taylor the Chris Waller stable foreman in Melbourne for looking after us so well. See you again before too long. Thank you to Paul Colaci for the great photos through co owner Clare Pettit.
16.01.2022 Delighted to have Admrial return to the stables this morning.
15.01.2022 The last 2 months of 2018 have seen some of our talented horses reappear on the track and several new potential stars have won a number of races on end including Garland who surprised us a little winning 3 on the trot from early September. The daughter of I Am Invincible was bought by Armidale Stud for breeding purposes but that career is on hold at present. Next up it was 4 year old gelding Balearic bought as a tried horse by his owners who also won 3 in a row commencing mid... September. The son of Smart Missile is back in work to recommence racing this preparation next month. Over this same period the Larter family enjoyed success with their talented gelding Fragment as he won 3 of 4 starts ( 2nd in the fourth ) and has now nearly topped the $100k mark. Craig Newitt was a regular in the winners circle on each of the three and his work with our team has been tremendous over the last 12 months. At the beginning of December Craig and Brendon McCoull represented Tassie in the national jockeys challenge in Brisbane and were victorious reminding the rest of the group that Tasmania produces great riders. Whilst Craig was away Victorian rider Dean Yendall came to Spreyton and won on Hes Rushin for the Kirkup clan and in a slashing display he also drove 4 year old mare Jubilance to win the second last on the program that day. Our highly promising stayer Eastender also returned to racing and though short of his best distance he nearly pulled off the Golden Mile. Dean was full of praise for the gelding as he heads to the Devonport Cup. Derasa then won the Open sprint at Elwick showing that she loves a fast run 1,000 metres race. Enzian and Kwai saluted at Mowbray in mid December with excellent rides by Brendon McCoull and Craig Newitt respectfully. Onto the final meeting of the year and Froggy produced 2 gems to win on Breathtaking ( with the blinkers turning her form around ) and then in a driving finish Its A Battle got there by the narrowest of margins. Overall its been a very satisfying 3 months for the team with huge thanks to our brilliant owners and very hard working staff for making it all happen. We wish you a happy time over Christmas and the New Year with your family and friends. Hope to see you in the winners circle soon !

13.01.2022 SPREYTON trainer Barry Campbell will saddle up some of his 2018-19 carnival contenders in trials at Longford tomorrow. Campbell will present his talented mare D...erasa and major cups contender Eastender in trials one and three respectively along with Chillout, Jubilance Enzian, Royal Flo and lightly raced three-year-old filly Kwai. Derasa has not started since her last-start third at Caulfield in June while Eastender will be having his first solid hit-out since winning the St Leger (2600m) in Launceston in March. Eastender will line up in trial three and he is destined for another cups campaign while Derasa (trial 1) is expected to be aimed at the Group 3 Bow Mistress in Hobart (1200m) with the Newmarket also a possible destination first or second-up. Chillout was very competitive in open company over sprint distances last preparation so he could be aimed at a couple of the quality handicaps over the shorter courses. Enzian made her way quickly through the classes winning three of her last five starts before being spelled and she will line up in trial three alongside Eastender. Jubilance won the 3YO Tasmanian Magic Millions Classic and while unplaced in three of her four subsequent outings she is expected to make her presence felt in class races this time in. Royal Flo is an unraced four-year-old mare that has been to the trials four times, the attest a third on her home track (Devonport) in late May behind the very classy Nova Vista. Kwai, a striking filly by War from the Delago Brom mare Pontington, won a 2YO Maiden at only her second start after which she was tipped out for a lengthy spell. Kwai will go around in the seventh of eight trials with the first scheduled to start at 10.30 am.
13.01.2022 It has been a great few weeks for the stables - winning the last 7 races. Congratulations to all connections!

13.01.2022 Race 6 Devonport - BALEARIC / Craig Newitt & Barry Campbell Ensign Lodge Racing
12.01.2022 The January 2019 Summary Eastender...the story so far! If ever there was a surprise packet its Eastender. As a yearling he looked like a foal. As a 2 year old he looked like a yearling whilst as a 3 year old he still seemed a very young horse. Now at 5 hes pretty much grown up ! Hes emerged as a highly talented stayer and he looks to be a real chance in both Tassies major Cups next month. Twelve months ago he ran respectably in both the Hobart and Launceston Cups as an i...mmature 4 year old , but this year hes a much stronger and mentally more mature and experienced gelding. His very good win in the recent Devonport Cup early in January was especially noteworthy and his Summer Cup win at Elwick last Sunday against talented opposition showed that hes ready for his next big assignments. Hes now earned over the $200k mark with it seems hopefully , more to come. Throughout the month there were some interesting winners including Breathtaking on New Years Day, impressive first starter Maroch on Devonport Cup day , Strike Celebration at Elwick which gave us the stables first 2yo winner of the season and this week 2yo filly Deroche looked sharp winning at Mowbray. Thank you to our brilliant owners and staff who support us and make it all happen. Onwards to a busy February and more fantastic Tassie carnival racing. See more

10.01.2022 B McCoull. A champion rider before and still now. His status as the states leading rider over such a long period is very well documented and his ride on Fragment at Spreyton today showed again why he has achieved the status he has. We could call it a peach of a ride , a ripping ride , a beauty or just a top class effort by one of Tassies best ever. Thank you Brendon and well done to the Larter family who have been with us for so many years on Fragments very good win today. A good result all round.
10.01.2022 Worth another well done with this terrific photo of Breaana riding her first winner yesterday at Spreyton courtesy of Greg Mansfield
10.01.2022 It was a big weekend for the stable with first up our talented 3yo filly Derasa running a terrific race at Caulfield yesterday From the outside barrier in a field of 16 over the 1,100 metres dash the filly shot out of the gates like a cannon to head the field after 100 metres and lead the fillies into the straight only to be run down just before the line beaten a long head and running 3rd. It was a very commendable effort and she now spells with the summer carnival sprints in... her sights. Then onto Spreyton today where the 2yo first starter Kwai was an eye catching good winner on debut. The filly had trialled well and took that form to the races with Craig Newitt full of praise for her effort declaring the filly pretty talented. Next up it was the turn of our stable apprentice Breaana Smith to win on a stable favourite Moorcroft first up after a spell. It was in fact Breaanas 2nd win in as many weeks and shes now well on her way to a successful career. Well done from all the stable team as your hard work is paying off now. Great to see you flying along and riding consistently well Breaana. Photo of Kwai winning at Spreyton today courtesy of Peter Staples See more
09.01.2022 Racecaller Colin McNiff summed up todays Spreyton race win when he said in the last few metres of the race Hes Tough Enough is tough enough indeed as the 4 year old scored his deserved win after recent consistent racing. The very successful all green racing silks belonging to Charles and Wendy Langmaid were in the winners circle once again today when their determined gelding shot clear at the top of the straight to hold off all challengers and win comfortably. He looks a progressive staying prospect and with Craig Newitt steering Hes Tough Enough todays effort looked to be a sign of more wins to come. Congratulations Charles and Wendy and thank you to our Ensign Lodge stable team for all your care of our horses.
08.01.2022 Who needs staff when you have Balearic on the job!!!!! Hes a good boy!!! Hes earned an extra carrot Barry!!!
08.01.2022 Eight wins throughout May provided the stable with an excellent month of results with victories by Axion ( 2 ) Deroche ( 2 ) Enzian Sanction King Newhart and 4 and a half lengths winning newcomer Tessie ( named after well we know who and disposing of her maiden amazingly on Mothers Day ! ) We were thrilled to see Axion return to such good form and our sharp 2yo filly Deroche was scintillating in her 2 wins scoring by 4 lengths in the Armidale Stud $50k Tasbred 2yo Classic on... 18th May. Vu and Amanda were on course to see Sanction King break through at start 3. Newhart continued to show his talent with another good win at Spreyton last Sunday at only his 3rd start showing again that patience can reward owners well as the son of Fighting Sun appears talented. Enzian has been racing consistently and won well early in May courtesy of a determined ride by apprentice Alex Patis. At Flemington on Saturday Eastender ran the race of his life to run 3rd in the $400k 2,800 metres Listed Andrew Ramsden a qualifier for the Melbourne Cup. As Craig Newitt said Hes never gone better In any other year this race is 3,200 metres not 2,800 metres like today Cant wait for the spring Thanks to our great stable team and brilliant owners for allowing us to train your talented horses. 07.01.2022 Flying Needs Further filly Deroche (2f x Buzzing Along) returned in impressive fashion today winning the 2YO handicap at Launceston. Purchased at the 2018 Tasm...anian Magic Millions by Star Throughbreds. Congratulations to Ensign Lodge, Craig Newitt and connections. The filly has now won 3 of her 5 starts and was also narrowly beaten in the Listed Gold Soverign Stakes in February. #needsfurther #AllStarStallion : courtesy of Stacey Lear photography
07.01.2022 Eastender charges late to win the 2019 Summer Cup
07.01.2022 It was a good day at the Spreyton races today with a stable double on a seven race program First up it was Craig Newitt steering our promising 3 year old filly Enzian to a strong win in a 1,150 metres class 1. Its never easy to progress immediately to a class 1 after a maiden win but the filly did just that in the manner of a good quality individual who may well have nice races in store for her later in the year. Then it was the turn of our former stable apprentice Raquel Cl...ark winning on long time stable resident Scouting Around during a brief visit back to her home state. A very well judged ride and a lovely birthday present for his part owner Pam Sutton Most of the horses raced in good style today and a special mention to our new stable apprentice Breanna Smith just starting her riding career and running 2nd in the opening race on the program. Your 1st win isnt far away! Thank you to our winning owners today for all your great support and to our stable team who do a great job taking special care of all our horses See more
07.01.2022 Its been a productive month for the stable with 8 winners and a number of highlights. Those included newcomer to the state Garland winning twice early in September at Spreyton. The daughter of the all conquering I Am Invincible was bought by Armidale Stud primarily for breeding but her early wins may well mean a rethink on that front. Then it was Scouts turn as Darma produced a gem of a ride to lead all the way on Scouting Around at Spreyton. It was terrific to watch ! Form...er Sydneysider Balearic won his first race in Tassie in mid September and then a Craig Newitt special got Axion to salute first up this preparation on the first of the Mowbray night meetings last Tuesday. Balearic is getting his mind on the job now and won again in Hobart on Sunday. Fragment won at the end of August and then again early in September with the prospect of a hat trick tonight at Mowbray but it was clear at the corner when a horse went wide that he had his work cut out and although he found the line strongly he just missed on the post by the narrowest of margins. Hes racing in great form this preparation. Surprise packet Garland won again tonight in slashing style at Mowbray ( 3 in a row now ) and may be destined for better races along the way. Thanks to our great group of owners and our loyal and hard working Ensign Lodge staff. Onwards to the upcoming sets of barrier trials later this month and the return of our mighty warrior Admiral. 05.01.2022 2nd in charge to stable boss Roxy, Charlies finished his calls and his coffee.. hes ready for todays Good Friday race meeting at Mowbray!!
05.01.2022 Three in succession for Garland Article by: Peter Staples Talented mare Garland made it three wins in succession when she powered home to take out a class two h...andicap over 1200 metres in Launceston on Wednesday night. The Barry Campbell-trained mare impressed with wins at her two previous starts on her home track in Devonport over 1150 metres but she really appreciated her first attempt on turf since arriving from Chris Wallers Queensland satellite stable in May. Garland ($2.60 into $2.10 fav) settled fourth on the rails with Craig Newitt aboard while the well-backed Invincible Rock ($3.70) set a solid tempo in front and looked to be travelling like the winner on the home turn. But when Newitt eased Garland of the rails to stake her claim the mare knuckled down to her task and cruised to the front and went on to win comfortably over Invincible Rock with Gasnier a distant third. She is a very nice mare that has done a great job so far but I think there are more wins in store for her if she continues to improve, Campbell said. I dont know that she would be suited to the Group 3 Vamos but Im sure well find some nice races for her in the coming months. Newitt was full of praise for the daughter of I am Invincible. This mare just keeps on improving and while Im not sure how far she can go I am sure there are more wins in her before she heads to the breeding barn, Newitt said. The way she raced tonight I have no doubts she will run out 1400 metres. Garland was purchased by Armidale Stud for breeding purposes but the plan to have her visit a stallion this coming season may have been put on hold. While she is racing so well we are a bit apprehensive about curtailing her racing career but we never make decisions straight after a race so we will assess what we will do in the short term in the next day or so, said Armidale director Rhiannon Whishaw.
04.01.2022 The Boss could not be happier with the big guy FRAGMENT upon his arrival in Melbourne for his first attempt on the big stage tomorrow at Caulfield. Good luck to the Larter Family and Apprentice Lachlan King who takes the sit. Luckily Froggy will be oncourse to give him some pointers..

01.01.2022 Easiest words to describe Coal Hill... Bloody Tough!!! And she showed that yet again last night when she finally broke her Maiden status at Mowbray. The excitement she has brought her patient, loyal owners is reward for the faith they have shown in their girl. Lucy.. enjoy your little break girl.. youve earned it!
