25.01.2022 Who knew this beautiful 1969 stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the epic flight was created by an Australian WW2 official war artist? There's a fantastic profile on Eric Thake and his focus on WW2 aircraft wreckage on a blog called A Year of Aviation Illustration & Art, by respected aviation historian James Kightly, aka Vintage Aero Writer. Check out this link for the story: https://yearofaviationillustration.home.blog//thakes-shap/
24.01.2022 With the hectic centenary year behind us (and COVID-19 further clipping our wings) we've been steadily working away on the Epic Flight website to ensure it becomes a comprehensive resource for the next 100 years. Two great new additions include memorials across Australia, compiled by the wonderful historian Helen Stein from North Road Cemetery; and a series of images (and accompanying news articles) taken over the decades by photographers at The Advertiser (and kindly offered copyright free by our EFC media partners News Corporation). You'll find both in the website's collections section: https://epicflightcentenary.com.au/objects/ Happy weekend everyone.

21.01.2022 Here’s one for the diary...
20.01.2022 Check out this fantastic story from the Department of Defence about our little epic flight mascot’s big mission to the Middle East. Sir Ross Smith would be so chuffed that the 21st century remake of his Marmaduke II mascot is flying high 100 years on! Congratulations again to Taye Hebden from Henley Beach PS for his winning design ‘Pete the Pilot’. And huge thanks to Makers Empire for making the 3D printing competition happen last year, and helping us to spread the word to 4800 entrants who competed from across SA and around the world. 17.01.2022 It’s not every day you know someone lifting off into space, so it was very special to watch the amazing Shannon Walker (aka wife of our epic flight patron Andy Thomas) in today’s launch of the SpaceX Crew-1 Mission. You can see coverage here: https://www.spacex.com/launches/
16.01.2022 Next time you’re in the vicinity of Lightsview (north east of the Adelaide CBD) check out the fantastic new Vickers Vimy artwork beside Hampstead Rd and also the wetland landscaping around the significant pine planted in honour of Ross Smith and his crew. Bravo to the team at Lightsview developers Peet Ltd for their passion and commitment to celebrating the site where the Vimy landed in 1920. It really is a terrific legacy project.
14.01.2022 Perfect excuse to sit down for a cuppa tomorrow at 4.30pm (SA time)...
09.01.2022 Check out this fantastic article on the Great Air Race, and how it should be used to inspire public policy today!
09.01.2022 In lovely news for Remembrance Day, the South Australian state budget has formalised the Marshall Government’s $2m commitment to relocating the Vickers Vimy. Image from today’s The Advertiser.
08.01.2022 From the Superloop Adelaide 500 in March, right through to the Sir Ross Smith Memorial Re-dedication ceremony on 10 December, our Epic Flight Centenary events brought the story alive for tens thousands of South Australians last year. You can now check them out on our website at https://epicflightcentenary.com.au/upcoming-events/ The fab image of the Vickers Vimy Flypast (performed by the Honourable Company of Air Pilots Australia) was taken by @tristanaviationphotos
06.01.2022 Thought you epic flight enthusiasts might like to check out the fantastic new YouTube channel set up by Britain's National Aerospace Library. More than 30 films date back to 1927 and include rare footage of early airliners, inflight movies and the the first round-the-world flight in 1924. In the Aviation History section you'll find The Story of the Century (Parts 1 and 2). Sadly our boys don't get a mention, but Alcock and Brown's Vimy is there and all the early footage really is terrific. https://www.youtube.com/watch
04.01.2022 Did you know Ross Smith now stars in a fantastic, animated interactive trail at Adelaide Airport? The trail begins at the main terminal and takes you on a fun, fascinating journey past the bronze markers and down to the Vickers Vimy hangar. The story comes to life on your phone or tablet, and only works if you're at the airport and scan the QR Code. With so few flights coming in to Adelaide, now's the perfect time to take the kids or grandkids to check it out. For all the details visit https://www.adelaideairport.com.au//experience-the-vicker/
03.01.2022 Been meaning to tell you about the stunning Flights Gin Bar - Home of Mad Men OrigInal & Vimy Gin. It's located at Penny's Hill in McLaren Vale and features our boys on the walls. Don't miss it if you're planning a visit to the Fleurieu now that restrictions are easing. Thanks to Rodney Robertson & Associates (creators of the amazing branding) for the first two images.
03.01.2022 Wonderful to read news over the weekend about the launch of the Andy Thomas Space Foundation, with a key aim of inspiring Australian children about #space. Such well-deserved recognition for our Epic Flight Centenary 2019 patron, pictured third from right below with our ripper committee. 02.01.2022 It's 101 years to the day that the Vickers Vimy departed Hounslow. Go lads!
02.01.2022 Brilliant article on Ross Smith by author Michael Molkentin in the autumn edition of Wartime - the official magazine of the Australian War Memorial. Michael’s Ross Smith biography Anzac & Aviator is a ripper read too. Order online or at all good bookstores.
