25.01.2022 With the Olympic Games in Tokyo on his agenda in 2021 and as the High Performance Jumping Coach for the Australian Eventing Team jumping legend Nelson Pessoa shows no signs of slowing down as he looks ahead to helping to Australian team secure Olympic podium success. "This chance, this privilege to work with the Australian Eventing Team. The Australian eventers are real horse people, and people like them don't really exist anymore. "I think I'm a good match with the Australia...ns, because when it comes to the horses, I'm a maniac. To the horse, you need to talk horse. You need to take excellent care, be a perfectionist" Neco says - expressing his administration for Eventers Andrew Hoy and Chris Burton, who he says would rather live in their truck than in a hotel to be closer to their horses when they are away from home. 25.01.2022 Why Is My Horse Stumbling? by the FEI What are the reasons for your horse losing their footing? Almost all horses have the occasional trip or stumble with a rider on their back and although it can be heart-stopping for a couple of seconds, most of the time they recover and you can continue your ride as normal.... If your horses stumbling is resulting in falling, is becoming such a regular feature of your rides that its interfering with your normal activities, or is straight up just making you nervous, then its time to get down to the root cause of the problem. > Ask the professionals: First things first, and that is always to get the professionals in to check for anything untoward. Bad stumbling can be caused by a variety of issues, but some of these can have neurological causes or may be rooted in problems with the lower leg. A vet is best placed to assess your horse and decide whether further tests or x-rays are needed. After the vet, your farrier is the next person to contact. Often, horses who stumble or trip need slight alterations to their trimming or shoeing they might have toes that are too long, the angles in the hooves could be too shallow or too steep, one foot might be shaped differently to the other, or there could even be instances where a disease of the hoof causes stumbling. Youll need an expert to help you look into all of these possibilities so your farrier and/or vet may want to watch you ride, see when and how the horse stumbles and figure out what the underlying cause could be. Once youve consulted the experts and are sure there isnt any physical problem which might be related to your horses stumbling, its time to look to the less serious causes of stumbling and tripping. > What else might be the cause? The main reason horses have occasional stumbles is because theyre distracted, the same way that humans might occasionally miss out one step in a flight of stairs or trip over an uneven part of pavement. However, these stumbles can be exacerbated by a number of things. Young or very unbalanced horses are likely to trip more than more experienced horses for the simple reason that they havent yet learn to carry themselves correctly and dont have the strength and coordination that youd expect from a going horse. If youre out on trails or outside of the arena, they can also struggle initially to negotiate uneven terrain again, this isnt dissimilar to how toddlers and small children fall over more often than adults! Theyre still learning body awareness skills and fine motor coordination, and may simply need more time and improved balance to get over this. Working with an instructor on getting the horse to balance itself can be useful, as can some lunging, polework, and plenty of work on varied terrain (even just in walk) to help the...read more: https://www.fei.org//lifes/teach-me/why-my-horse-stumbling

25.01.2022 Coach of the Month for November 2020 is... (drum roll) Congratulations Wendy Schaeffer-Macdonald, an EA Level 2 Coach for both Jumping and Eventing, who lives in Echunga, South Australia. Moreover, Wendy is an Olympic Gold Medalist, winning Team Gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games. "I was born into a life surrounded by horses if not a historically horsey family as such. My Mum had been desperate for a horse as a child but had to wait until reaching early adulthood where sh...e made up for her former denial of horses. I grew up with my Mum, firstly enjoying her time with horses in the hunt field, then starting out in the Eventing game before chasing her dream to represent Australia in the 1986 World Three Day Event Championships. It was a natural progression for me to live and love horses, to be ambitious and to dream one day of doing what I had witnessed at those World Championships: someone becoming the best in the world on that day. My Olympic mount, Sunburst, was purchased as an Off the Track Thoroughbred (OTTB) a few months later when I was still 11years old. Ten years later, in the heat and humidity that was an integral part of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Sunburst and I achieved that ultimate performance to be the leading member of the Australian team which won Gold in the Team Three Day Event. 21.01.2022 The Impact of the Sex of Handlers and Riders on the Reported Social Confidence, Compliance and Touch Sensitivity of Horses in Their Care Any influence of the sex of the human partner in humanhorse interactions on the behaviour of horses is currently largely anecdotal. Associations between the sex of humans and equine behaviour may have welfare implications. This study investigated observations of ridden and non-ridden horse behaviour, as reported by 1,420 respondents to the... Equine Behaviour and Research Questionnaire (E-BARQ). Results reveal some human sex-related differences between horses handled and ridden by male and female humans. Horses ridden or handled by male humans were more likely to be difficult to catch and defensive when approached, but less likely to pull on the reins/brace the neck or toss their head. The study revealed the importance of considering the sex of the rider or handler when investigating equine behaviour...read more: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/11/1/130 Photo: Kirsten LaChance

19.01.2022 As the mercury rises in Australia and the summer heat sets in it is important to remember that hydration for both horse and rider is crucial, especially if competing in hot weather. Inadequate hydration can have whole-body consequences for the horse, especially an increased risk of colic, and it contributes to heat stress. You can use these tips to help make sure your horse is properly hydrated:... Make sure horses have access to water at all times Check automatic waterers every time you feed Keep your water troughs and buckets clean Refresh water frequently in hot weather Bring water with you when you travel Take frequent water breaks in hot climates If out on a hack, make sure you can stop for a water break somewhere with fresh, clean water. You can entice your horse to drink more water by adding a bit of flavor to it or letting a few apples or chunks of watermelon bob at the surface Electrolytes that help your horse retain hydration are also flavoured to appeal to finicky drinkers. #PeakPerformance #EAHighPerformance #AusEquestrianTeam #StayHydrated

19.01.2022 Could Horse Gear Be Made From Vegan Leather? Leather has been the mainstay of horse gear for centuries, providing the perfect combination of strength, flexibility and durability. Researchers, who have reviewed evidence relating to the manufacture of leather-like material using fungi, believe it has considerable potential to be the best leather substitute in terms of sustainability and cost when compared to animal and plastic-derived versions.... Traditional leather and its alternatives are typically obtained from animals and synthetic polymers. Leather can be considered a co-product of meat production, with both livestock farming and the leather production process increasingly considered to be ethically questionable and environmentally unfriendly over issues such as greenhouse gas emissions and the use of hazardous substances in the tanning process. The production of synthetic leather materials from plastics such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or polyurethane (PU) also depend on chemicals derived from fossil fuels. In their review, scientists with the University of Vienna, Imperial College London, and RMIT University in Australia describe fungi-derived leather substitutes as an emerging class of ethically and environmentally responsible fabrics, winning favour as an alternative to bovine and synthetic leathers. While traditional leather and its alternatives are sourced from animals and synthetic polymers, these renewable sustainable leather substitutes are obtained through the upcycling of low-cost agricultural and forestry by-products into chitinous polymers and other polysaccharides using a natural and carbon-neutral biological fungal growth process. Following physical and chemical treatment, these sheets of fungal biomass visually resemble leather and exhibit comparable material and tactile properties, they say...read more: https://www.horsetalk.co.nz///10/horse-gear-vegan-leather/

19.01.2022 Addressing In-Hand Challenges in Horses Can Lead to Better Behaviour Under Saddle Dangerous ridden behaviour in horses, such as bolting, rearing and bucking, are common and may reflect various aspects of the horses’ immediate experience, history and health. They can have a major impact on human safety and horse welfare because of the common misunderstandings of unwelcome behaviour in horses and popular treatments for so-called 'problem' horses. ... A study aimed to identify any in-hand behaviours associated with these dangerous ridden behaviours evaluated based on responses (n = 1584) to an Equine Behaviour Assessment and Research Questionnaire (E-BARQ). Declining reports of bolting, rearing and bucking were associated with decreasing problems loading horses onto transporters, increasing social confidence with other horses and other animals, improved leading behaviour and increased tolerance of restraint & head handling (when bridling/haltering). Findings from the current study could help riders and trainers predict dangerous ridden behaviour before they manifest fully, allowing for remediation that avoids the escalation of force in the training of misunderstood horses and thus improving safety and welfare for both horses and riders...read more: https://www.mdpi.com/2076-2615/10/12/2431

19.01.2022 Evidence-Based Training Regimes the Way Forward in Protecting Key Equine Leg Tendons Review The athleticism of the horse owes much to the superficial digital flexor tendons in the front legs. These energystoring tendons play a crucial role in the efficiency of the gallop and trot. However, they are highly susceptible to injury. Indeed, injuries to the superficial digital flexor tendons are one of the most commonly reported causes of lameness in the performance horse.... Researchers Claire OBrien, Neil Marr and Chavaunne Thorpe, in a review published in the Equine Veterinary Journal, have explored the biomechanical and biothermal effects of strain on this key tendon and how they contribute to the accumulation of microdamage. The trio also explored the effect of agerelated alterations on strain response and subsequent injury risk to the tendon. Given that tendon injuries are slow to heal and poor at regenerating tissue, prompt detection of early stages of problems and timely adaptations to training protocols are likely to have a better outcome than advances in treatment, they say. Early screening tools and detection protocols could subsequently be of benefit in identifying subclinical signs of degeneration during the training programme. This, they say, would provide an opportunity for preventative strategies to be implemented to minimise the number of injuries and reduce recovery periods in elite performance horses. The authors, who cited 140 scientific papers in their review, said most superficial digital flexor tendon injuries occur during fitness work in training regimes...read more: https://www.horsetalk.co.nz//training-equine-leg-tendons-/

17.01.2022 Two Exercises to Improve Flying Changes - by the FEI If all has gone to plan in your schooling, a horse often just picks up the flying changes quite easily when the canter is balanced and strong enough to ask for them. For others though, even with a well-established canter, it doesn’t come quite so easily and the horse might get excited and out of control, or go the opposite way and shut down entirely and not offer the change at all.... Remember, in all instances, it is really important that you’re honest with yourself about the quality of the canter. If the canter isn’t good enough, getting balanced flying changes on the aids is going to be extremely difficult. Let's look at these two exercises... Loop Through X: Though there’s some debate about whether counter canter or changes come first, most Dressage trainers will agree that counter canter is the first thing to get right. Once the counter canter is good enough, you can use it to your advantage to help in asking for the changes. While there’s a myriad of ways you can do this (counter canter on a 20m circle with a change to true canter, half pass to counter canter and then a change to true canter), using a loop through X is often one of the easier options to ride and seems to help horses understand what you are asking for. To ride this exercise: > On the left rein, pick up the right canter with a slight flexion to the outside and go large around the arena. You can either pop straight into counter canter from walk, or pick up true canter and then come across the short diagonal without changing left. > Ride counter canter through the short side, aiming to get your horse as bouncy as possible > At K, start to ride a loop through X, straightening the horse over the centre line > Between X and M, push the horse’s quarters over slightly to the new leading leg (in this case, to the left) and use your leg and a whip if necessary to encourage the horse to get the canter short and quick behind. > Change the flexion slightly, and ask for the change by moving your new outside leg slightly behind the girth and lifting your new inside hip up and forwards. Try to do this before you reach M as it may take a few strides for the horse to respond to your aid. If your horse doesn’t change, stay calm and make sure the counter canter is balanced. Your horse may try and do the change at C, but if not, simply collect the counter canter up and try another loop starting from H...read more: https://www.fei.org//two-exercises-help-horse-learn-flying

Like many, Maddi was drawn to the gleaming black coat, the lustrous mane and tail, the extravagant movement. But when she actually met a Friesian for the first time, the attraction was amplified. "I fell in love with their souls, even more than their looks," says Maddi. "They are quiet, gentle and oh so sweet. They have a way of capturing you." Maddi decided this was exactly the type of horse for her. She set about doing her research, investigating bloodlines, conformation and movement. However, being based in Queensland presented Maddi with some challenges on her quest. "There are pretty much no studs here," says Maddi. Using the power of the internet, Maddi began to look further afield. She happened across a scrawny, young gelding but skimmed over him, as another horse captured her attention. But upon further consideration, the latter was not meant to be. Maddi continued her search, browsing through multiple studs. Nothing really caught her eye. Six months passed by and still no luck. Maddis thoughts once again turned back to that first youngster she had previously dismissed. "I was speaking to his breeder about Friesian-related things and she mentioned that he was still available," recalls Maddi. With renewed interest, Maddi asked for updated footage and conformation shots. The passing of time had seen the young gelding to grow into himself a little more; Maddi fell in love. "Amongst over five other Friesian babies, he was the one, I just felt it in my heart," describes Maddi. "Apart from having visibly good conformation and bloodlines, he was more than that, he wasnt his sire or dam, he was his own special horse with his own name and soon his own accomplishments," recalls Maddi, "and so I purchased a two-year-old Friesian horse from Victoria, sight unseen...read the full story: https://www.equestrian.org.au//finding-friendship-and-free Equestrian Queensland Equestrian NSW Equestrian South Australia Inc Equestrian Victoria Equestrian Western Australia Equestrian Tasmania Equestrian Northern Territory #ridewithus #fortheloveofthehorse #staystrong #inspirational #horse #equestrian

13.01.2022 Clone of Long-Dead Przewalskis Horse Offers Genetic Hope for Endangered Species A clone of a Przewalskis horse whose DNA was cryopreserved 40 years ago has been born in Texas, in a major milestone for the conservation of the endangered species. The colt foal was born on August 6 at Timber Creek Veterinary to a domestic surrogate mother. He had been cloned from a Przewalskis horse stallion named Kuporovic who was born in 1975 in the UK, and transferred to the US in 1978. He... was recorded as Stud Book number 615 and lived until 1998. His DNA was cryopreserved at the San Diego Zoo Global (SDZG) Frozen Zoo, after forward-thinking conservationists saved living cells from more than dozen Przewalskis horses. The SB615 cell line was chosen for genetic rescue cloning because an analysis of the captive breeding pedigree revealed that the genome offers significantly more genetic variation than any living Przewalskis horse. The species (Equus ferus) is endangered according to the IUCN Red List. The new foal has been named Kurt in honor of Kurt Benirschke, M.D., who was instrumental in founding the Frozen Zoo and the conservation research program at San Diego Zoo Global. Kurt will be moved to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park to be integrated into a breeding herd once he is older, providing a valuable infusion of genetic diversity for the Przewalskis horse population. 12.01.2022 Itchy and scratchy: Mutual Horse Grooming Put Under the Spotlight If youve got an itch, youre unlikely to get anyone other than a friend to scratch it. The same goes for the horse world, according to fresh research in Japan. Teikyo University of Science researchers Masaki Shimada and Nae Suzuki set out to learn more about the contribution of mutual grooming to relationships within a feral horse herd.... Their work, reported in the journal Animals, focused on a group of nine horses who live in a protected area of about 550 hectares at Cape Toi, in Kushima City. The pair noted that, among social primates, social grooming strengthens friendly relationships. Their work with horses examined three hypotheses: That mutual grooming helped strengthen already friendly relationships; that it helped to restore troubled relationships; and that it had a role in parasite removal. The horses were monitored for a total of 33.5 hours over 15 days, and mathematical models were applied to learn about the roles of kinship, aggression, proximity, social rank, and social networking in mutual grooming. Six of the nine horses were seen to engage in mutual grooming during the observation periods, comprising two stallions, three adult mares and one colt. There were 84 bouts, lasting on 85 sec on average, which only ever involved two individuals. No instances were observed of a third individual joining a grooming pair. Mutual grooming between horses was almost completely and perfectly symmetrical, the researchers found. One horse received grooming from the other as soon as the former started grooming the latter. In all cases, the horses faced each other and mutually groomed nearly the same body parts simultaneously. As soon as one horse stopped grooming, the other stopped as well. These behaviors applied both to related and unrelated pairs of horses. Shimada and Suzuki said their observations and analysis supported the hypothesis that mutual grooming helped strengthen friendly relationships, and parasite removal. However, the findings did not corroborate the relationship-restoring hypothesis. For example, the top-ranked horse frequently directed aggression toward the second-ranked herd member. The two were never seen grooming each other...read more: https://www.horsetalk.co.nz//itchy-scratchy-mutual-horse-/

12.01.2022 Tomorrow marks 20 years since the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and the lighting of the Olympic cauldron in spectacular fashion by Cathy Freeman. There were 11,000 people who carried the torch within Australia including two of our very own equestrian heroes Gillian Rolton and Peppermint Grove aka Fred. The pair took the torch on its first leg of the Olympic torch relay in Adelaide ahead of the 2000 Sydney Games Gill won gold at the 1992 Barcelona Olympi...c Games but made headlines around the world and became a household name four years later for her ride in Atlanta where she won her second gold medal She sustained a broken collarbone and cracked her ribs five minutes into the event when Peppermint Grove lost his footing and fell twice. 10.01.2022 In this final instalment of the Australian Equestrian Teams "Dressage Diary with Simone Pearce" series Simone leaves us with some words of advice for our young riders who dream of achieving at the highest level of equestrian sport. I think my advice to young Australians would be that if you have a big dream and you want to make it happen then you have to push yourself. You have to believe in yourself, even when the times are rough and maybe when other people dont believe i...n you. "You have every opportunity when you really push yourself and when you do everything you can to make your own dreams come true. You can never give up and you have to work hard at it, try more and get up when you fail. "I think that the key to success in this world is to really believe in yourself and push yourself to be the best you possibly can be" describes Simone. #Dressage #WordsofWisdom #AusEquestrianTeam #HighPerformance

09.01.2022 Milk Thistle Extract Showed Anti-Inflammatory Abilities in Lab Test on Horse Blood A compound extracted from milk thistle showed useful anti-inflammatory properties when tested on cells taken from horse blood, researchers report. Italian researcher Enrico Gugliandolo and his colleagues, writing in the open-access journal Animals, noted that natural compounds are often an important source of biologically active molecules, which can find important applications in the treatment ...or prevention of disease. Silibinin is a natural polyphenolic flavonoid extracted from the plant milk thistle, Silybum marianum. Silibinin has been reported to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and support the immune system. For their study, blood samples were taken from 10 clinically healthy jumping horses. Equine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), which have a key role in the body’s immune response, were isolated and an inflammatory response was induced using an endotoxin. The cells were exposed to two different concentrations of silibinin. The study team found that the silibinin had a protective effect on the PBMCs. It was, they said, able to prevent the increase in levels of inflammatory-related proteins triggered by endotoxin exposure. The authors said silibinin may prove to be useful in the treatment or prevention of several inflammatory conditions in horses, although they stress that further research is required to confirm any therapeutic role...read more: https://www.horsetalk.co.nz//extract-milk-thistle-anti-in/

08.01.2022 Equestrian Australia High Performance Weekly Update 14th September, 2020 As we all continue to adapt to the new normal that has been unduly impressed upon us by the Covid-19 global pandemic we are reminded that although our sport may be performed individually in the arena our Australian riders are collectively a strong and supportive community. The engagement our High Performance riders have shown throughout these unprecedented times, and the commitment they have made to ...join together with their fellow riders, as well as support our upcoming athletes, is truly commendable. The positive attitudes and team mentality our riders have displayed can only serve to strengthen our Program as we move forward into what we are sure is a bright future. This past week has seen notable successes for some of our Australian athletes competing in FEI events overseas. These successes are an indication of our riders resilience and determination as our sport is able to carry on in some parts of the world, albeit under strict social distancing guidelines and altered conditions. Domestically we continue to stay abreast of the latest developments regarding the movement of both our horses and people and we are working closely with our athletes and the relevant governing authorities to ensure our riders are prepared for when FEI competition is able to resume in Australia. 05.01.2022 Tuesday Trivia - Did you know... That the common expression to become long in the tooth comes from horse anatomy and physiology? Horses' teeth don’t grow as they age, but they give the appearance of doing so because they emerge from their gums as needed when the ends get ground down from eating. The gums also recede more as the horse gets on in years, giving the horse the appearance of having long teeth. So, if someone calls you long in the tooth, watch out! They’re sayin...g you’re looking a bit on the older side. By the way, horses’ teeth occupy more volume in their heads than their brains do! If you have a horse that does goofy things all the time, you won’t question that fact. Adult male horses have four more teeth than do females, who have 36 in total. Photo: Dan Cook

03.01.2022 Influence of Mare Size on Birth Explored in Austrian Study Is the birth process in horses affected by the size of the mare? The answer is yes, according to researchers, who examined a range of hormone and heart-related changes that occur in mares and foals around the time of delivery. The study, by researchers at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna involved the monitoring of 23 heavily pregnant mares and their fetuses.... Small horses were represented by six Shetland ponies, while medium-sized horses were represented by eight Haflinger mares. Nine Warmbloods represented full-sized horses. Foal weight always approximated 10 percent of mare weight, Christina Nagel and her colleagues reported in the open-access journal Animals. However, the relative placenta weight was highest in the full-size mares. Relative placental weight did not differ between the Shetlands and Haflingers, they reported. The concentrations of progestins (hormones that maintain pregnancy) and cortisol (a hormone involved in the onset of foaling but also in an animals response to stress) were also highest in the full-size mares. Progestin concentrations in all the mares decreased towards foaling while cortisol concentrations increased. The heart rate of mares predictably increased before foaling in the horses, with the most pronounced increase seen in small mares. Overall, the Shetland mares foaled earlier than larger-size mares...read more: https://www.horsetalk.co.nz//influence-mare-size-birth-au/

03.01.2022 FEI Bans Horse Whisker Trimming from 2021 At the 2020 General Assembly held this week, a new rule that prohibits the clipping/shaving of sensory hairs was passed as part of the veterinary regulations. The Veterinary Committee believes that the horse’s sensory hairs must not be trimmed or removed as it reduces the horse’s sensory ability.... Voted through unanimously, the rule states that horses are not permitted to compete in FEI events if the horse’s sensory hairs have been clipped and/or shaven or in any other way removed unless individual sensory hairs have been removed by a veterinarian to prevent pain or discomfort for the horse. The change will align with legislation in a number of National Federations, where trimming or removal of sensory hairs is already forbidden and in some cases carries a heavy sanction. France, Germany and Switzerland are among the nations where whisker and or ear hair removal is banned to some degree, in some cases it is written into animal welfare law and in others, the removal of specified vibrissae is not permitted for horses competing under sporting federation rules. 02.01.2022 Protective headgear will be mandatory in FEI dressage from 1 January 2021 as the FEI stands behind the decision it made at last year's FEI General Assembly despite a petition put forward by the International Dressage Riders’ Club requesting to maintain the option to use top hats in senior international competitions The FEI Board discussed the issue again at the 2020 General Assembly and, although this rule has already been approved at last year’s General Assembly and is not a...n FEI Board decision, voted unanimously to maintain implementation on 1 January 2021. The FEI Board support for the General Assembly decision was based on safety grounds, the fact that a full consultation process had been conducted prior to the vote at the 2019 General Assembly, and that there is a clear and transparent process for Rules revision. It can also threaten everyones safety, especially during the chaos of an unfolding, dangerous situation.... So thats where having a Good NEIGHbour can make all the difference! It will also make it easier to handle and transport your horse, giving you one less thing to worry about! You simply contact your Good NEIGHbour and arrange with them that you will be moving your animals to their property.
