14.01.2022 Have you ever had an employer tell you that they were going to take money out of your pay? This could be to pay for something that you broke in the store or perhaps to help cover money that has gone missing from your register? Your employer actually cannot take money out of your pay without your written permission, or unless it is required by law, such as tax.

10.01.2022 So what is the difference between a full time, part time and casual worker? a) Full-time You work 38 hours per week and you get paid personal (sick) leave, annual (holiday) leave and public holidays.... b) Part-time You work less than 38 hours per week. You also get paid personal (sick) leave, annual (holiday) leave and public holidays that fall on your work days. c) Casual You are only paid for the hours that you work and there is no guarantee that you will get work unless they request you. You are paid a higher hourly rate as you are not paid for personal (sick) leave or annual (holiday) leave. Next week we will look at how many holidays and sick days you should expect as a full time worker.

07.01.2022 Many people will recall or are currently in their first job in high school being paid cash in hand, but is it legal? Some employers pay cash in hand so that they do not need to pay tax on your wages, this is illegal! But if your employer has already paid the government tax off your wage and then pays you cash in hand that is ok! And remember, always make sure that you check that you are being paid the minimum wage as well (which was posted a few weeks ago).

05.01.2022 Thinking of getting a Christmas casual job over the school holidays? This is a great way to save money and gain some experience for your resume. Your new boss will most likely ask you not to miss any of your shifts over this time, but can they really expect this? Even if you give notice? The casual work arrangement is based on Good Faith, and in this case it is assumed that you will be available during the Christmas period. If you do decide that you would like to miss a few shifts, your boss may need to hire another casual to cover your shifts. Although you might not be fired, you may be replaced!

04.01.2022 Sometimes employers may ask you to complete a work trial before they offer you a job to see how well you fit into their business. Did you know that ALL work trials need to be paid? You also need to be paid for ANY training that your employer requires you to complete. So next time you are asked to complete a work trial, make sure you ask about HOW LONG it will go for and HOW MUCH you will be paid.

01.01.2022 So if youre a full time worker how many holidays can you really take every year? At minimum you will get 4 weeks of paid annual (holiday) leave. So thats 20 working days per year for you to plan a holiday with! You will also get at least 10 days of paid personal (sick) leave for you to take just incase you are too unwell to come into work.... Keep in mind that in some careers you can get more than that, for example teachers who get 12 weeks of holidays per year!
