24.01.2022 Our Cooktown crews have been kept busy fixing the network in and around Hope Vale after a number of unplanned outages with various causes, including a bushfire that took out this pole. We know any power outage is frustrating in this heat, but rest assured our crews will be out there working to get your power back on, in all kinds of weather. Thanks for your patience and support! 22.01.2022 If you look closely at this photo you’ll see a set of headphones entangled in powerlines at Kowanyama. For the community’s safety, the area has been barricaded and our crews are on their way. Every year our crews across the state respond to senseless acts of network vandalism, which could end in death. If you throw anything at powerlines and it makes contact, you’re risking your own life, the community’s safety and a power outage. Please use common sense, take care ...and stay line aware. 20.01.2022 Pop quiz: what do you do if you have a car accident and end up with powerlines on or under your vehicle? It’s a situation 250 Qlders found themselves in last year, and what you do next could save your life. The correct answer: STAY. CALL. WAIT. STAY in the vehicle, or at least 10m away if you’re a bystander it’s likely the car is live along with the ground around it. CALL 000. And WAIT for us and emergency services to arrive so we can get you out safely. This means overco...ming the instinct to try and exit a crashed vehicle, or running to the rescue if any part of the car is in contact with electricity, this is incredibly dangerous. If someone tries to step out of a vehicle in contact with lines (including those little green pillar boxes) and the vehicle’s live, touching the ground it will close the circuit and the electricity will run through their body to the ground: severe injury or instant death. In the rare instance of a crashed vehicle catching fire, when exiting is your last resort, ensure you’re never in contact with the car and ground at the same time, jump away while being careful not to overbalance, and shuffle with both feet in contact with the ground at all times until you’re at least 10m away. Stay safe, everyone #takecarestaylineaware #staycallwait

19.01.2022 A bare pole is a safe pole . People who illegally attach campaign placards or signs for garage sales, lost pets or any other advertising to poles place themselves at risk of electric shock, compromise the safety of our teams, and face hefty penalties under the Electricity Act 1994 (section 230, if you’re particularly keen ). It’s also a waste of resources when our crews have to go out and remove unauthorised signage - please find another way to promote your cause. Electrical Safety Office

14.01.2022 UPDATE: The Bureau of Meteorology has updated its forecast for the expected landfall of TC Kimi. The system is currently expected to cross the coast late on Monday between about Port Douglas and Innisfail. However, due to the changeable conditions, there remains considerable uncertainty with the crossing time and location. ----... EARLIER: Ergon Energy is urging customers between Cape Melville and Cardwell in far north Queensland to make sure they’re prepared for the possibility of gale force winds generated by Tropical Cyclone Kimi early tomorrow morning, Monday January 18. By the time it’s expected to cross the coast later in the day somewhere between Cooktown and Cairns, the storm may have developed into a category two cyclone packing destructive winds. Therefore, customers are urged to make preparations well in advance. One of the biggest dangers during gale force winds is flying debris, which can pose serious threat to people, property and powerlines. So, it’s important to clear your yard of, or tie down loose items like outdoor furniture, trampolines or anything else that may pose a risk. Each home should also have an emergency kit prepared including; torches, batteries, water containers, canned food, bottled water, a can opener and self-contained cooking facilities. A battery- powered radio is also essential for hearing important advice from news services. Once the cyclone has passed, it doesn’t mean the danger has. Fallen powerlines can be extremely dangerous. Stay away, warn others to do the same and report them to emergency services on 000 or contact Ergon Energy on 13 16 70. 14.01.2022 Qlders need to be ready for a busier-than-usual cyclone season, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning that four systems could impact the region. In its just-released summer outlook, the BOM points to the current La Nina conditions typically translating to more tropical lows. They’re predicting a 66% chance that Australia will experience above the average number of tropical cyclones (usually 9-11) this season (Nov-April). Qld is on track for a wet summer and four systems, with at least one cyclone making landfall. Severe weather can play havoc with the electricity network: we’re ready; are you? 13.01.2022 It's #NationalAgDay, and things are looking gooood at Alpha The sensational volunteers from Rural Aid have been giving local projects a makeover all week as part of the Our Towns initiative, which we're so proud to support. The big storm response further west meant our Barcy crew, who'd planned on giving some of their own time to helping with the Alpha makeover, were tied up with getting the power back on around Longreach, Winton and Stonehenge. However, our teams have loved the chance to pitch in at previous Our Towns efforts at Cunnamulla, Gayndah and Monto. Cheers to Rural Aid and the local communities for the chance to help regional Qld bounce back from the grind of drought and COVID and build resilience

13.01.2022 Cyclone Kimi continues to confound meteorologists with its unpredictable movements over the past 24 hours. After initially targeting Port Douglas, it re-calibrated its track towards Cairns, then Cardwell, and has now decided stop dead in the water off the Queensland coastline. It seems the unpredictable Kimi is now forecast to make a 180 degree turn and potentially meander back up the Tropical Coast over the coming days. Whichever way it goes, Kimi may carry destructive wind... (+150km/hr), heavy rain, and potential flash flooding and will still present a significant threat to lives and property. Our crews are ready to respond to any network impacts. In preparation for its arrival, make sure your storm kits have torches, batteries, bottled water, charged-up mobile phones with spare chargers if possible, canned foods and a portable gas cooker. Also make sure you keep a battery-powered radio handy to hear your local news broadcasts. Clear away garden furniture and trampolines and tie down any objects around which may become airborne during the storm. Flying debris poses the biggest risks to people, property and powerlines. If you see fallen powerlines, stay well clear, tell others and contact 000 or 13 16 70. #tckimi For more information on storm and cyclone safety, visit: https://bit.ly/2XQLVcw For more information on outages as and when they occur, visit: https://bit.ly/3bOzzdd Queensland Police Service ABC Far North Classic Hits 4CA Cairns Post

06.01.2022 See the little pine tree symbol on this pole? It’s because it’s a softwood, and depending on where you live, you’ll be seeing more of these in coming years. Across Qld, we install around 20,000 poles each year, with different types of poles used in different areas. Hardwood trees are slow-growing and getting harder to source, so we’ve been successfully trialling the wider use of plantation softwoods. As well as being more sustainable, the more porous timber means the pre...servative treatment penetrates more deeply than into hardwoods, making the pine option more termite- and rot-resistant. They’re also alleviating pressure on hardwood supplies from native forests. Fun fact: in the Wet Tropics, you’ll see trial softwood poles installed in the 1970s still going strong We’re getting better bang for buck on hardwoods by supplementing shorter poles with narrow steel bases, making them ideal for congested urban footpaths and termite-heavy areas away from the coastal fringe and Wet Tropics. In bushfire-prone regions, the tougher hardwood poles are still the go, along with concrete poles mostly around the Rocky region. We’re also trialling fibre-cement and fibreglass composite poles which are lighter than concrete, more fire-resistant than timber, and are rot- and termite-proof.
