04.01.2022 Wine tour report Well last weekends winery tour was an excellent start. Perfect weather andwWe visited 4 wineries (Helm, Clonakilla, Pankhurst and Brindabella) which made it a very full day. We started off with the 'godfather' of wine, Ken Helm at Helms. Ken gave us an excellent tour, with a very informative presentation. It was amazing to think he is a 5th generation wine grower, with his vineyard dating back to 1974 at Murrumbateman, but his ancestry from Rutherglen,... Vic, going back over 100 years. He also knows a thing or two about Germany, German wines and roses. If you get the chance to take up a guided tour with Ken it is well worth it, not to mention his rieslings are world class. We next went to Clonakilla. A few minutes the Canberra side of Murrumbateman, Clonakilla is one of the most awarded wineries in the region, with a number of 'niche' wines. The guys especially liked the shiraz viognier, which incidentally was in the news today with a bottle being sold for $10k!. We now headed closer to Canberra, with the little pocket of Wallaroo. First up was Pankhurst where Christine and Allan gave the guys an extended sampling session of their extensive wine list. These guys bring in expert wine makers specialising in each type of wine and the results are telling with many nationally awarded wines. The final stop for the day was at Brindabella, just down the road from Pankhurst. The vineyard is located high on a ridgeline with spectacular views, especially from the outdoor undercover area. The excellent catering is an added attraction. Brindabella had a range of different blends which stood out from the more traditional wines at the other wineries. All of these wineries are well worth a visit. Some offer food, such as Brindabella, with Clonakilla putting the finishing touches on a very impressive cellar door/sales area, although we went to the Murrumbateman pub for pizzas on this trip. All in all a sensational day for a wine tour!
