08.01.2022 Theogene Ngamije was just a small boy when a simple act of kindness by an Australian peacekeeper changed his life. Ngamije had been separated from his parents i...n a refugee camp in Rwanda in 1994 and thought his life was over. No day was easy, he said. I was five to six years old and most of us were in a refugee camp in Kibeho. Bombings, shootings started happening I was scared, of course intimidated and hungry. I was seated down, crying, not knowing where to go and an Australian soldier gave me an Australian national flag the patch, the one that normally goes on their uniform and gave me a piece of biscuit He lifted me up, put me on his shoulder and took me to safety where the other kids were. He saved me and he gave me a different understanding of what soldiers do. More than 20 years later, Ngamije is now a private in the Australian army. He shares his story in The courage for peace exhibition, which opens at the Australian War Memorial on 18 October 2019. 06.01.2022 Have you read the final report of the Productivity Commission Inquiry into compensation and rehabilitation for veterans A Better Way to Support Veterans rel...eased on 4 July 2019? The final report is comprehensive. It is more than 900 pages long and makes 69 recommendations and 26 findings. The report is available on the Productivity Commission website at https://www.pc.gov.au/inquiries/completed/veterans#report The final report changes a number of recommendations made in the draft report. In particular, the recommendation that DVA should be abolished has been removed, with an emphasis on the need for a standalone agency. There are also new chapters focusing on mental health and advocacy.

06.01.2022 CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Today, and every day, we salute the progress of all women, everywhere, and particularly honour the women who have forged a... path in Defence Forces worldwide. The 2018 'By the Left’ initiative inspired many women veterans to march on ANZAC day for the first time and the campaign also inspired a veteran artist to create this unique portrait which became a top 35 finalist in the inaugural Napier Waller Art Prize at the Australian War Memorial in 2018. The Women Veterans Network Australia - WVNA are delighted to have purchased this artwork and it will be on display at the WVNA conference in Brisbane over the weekend of #InternationalWomensDay. This portrait is wonderful symbol of #strongertogether as our Executive team gathers to discuss the way forward and continue to forge a path in the veteran community #IWD2019 Find out more about this very special work of art here: https://broo975.wixsite.com/mysi//a-deeply-meaningful-sale

05.01.2022 HISTORY ALL AUSTRALIANS SHOULD KNOW Today, 19th February is the 77th Anniversary of the bombing of Darwin, but many Australians do not know, that the Japanese b...ombed as far south as Katherine in the NT and parts of WA and QLD as well. Curriculum material only filtered into schools for the 50th anniversary, after the Government's 50 year media censorship had expired. Many servicemen who were stationed in these areas were not recognised as having served in a War Zone and missed out on benefits because of this. The Government's reasoning was to stop panic of the Australian Public but also to hide how grossly unprepared they had been. See more
