10.01.2022 Teddy Sheean was awarded Victoria Cross today 78 years after HMAS Armidale sunk. Ordinary Seaman Sheean was just 18 years old, the youngest member of the crew of HMAS Armidale on patrol off the coast of East Timor, when the vessel came under heavy attack from Japanese aircraft. The Armidale was struck by two torpedoes and, with survivors leaping into the sea as their ship went down. ... Teddy strapped himself to an anti-aircraft gun and began firing at the Japanese fighter planes keeping them away from his mates floating a drift in the ocean. Ordinary Seaman Sheean was last seen still firing his gun as HMAS Armidale disappeared below the waterline. Today we not only commemorate the 149 crew members of the HMAS Armidale (49 survived) but Australia's latest Victoria Cross recipient Teedy Sheean. Lest We Forget
