25.01.2022 The 2021 theme for #worlddayofsocialjustice worlddayofsocialjustice is A Call for Social Justice in the Digital Economy. The growth of technology, including digital labour platforms, particularly since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, has led to increased work opportunities for many. However it is important to also remember that sometimes this can also exacerbate the divide between developed and developing economies; as well as between large businesses that can afford to... adapt to changing technologies, and small businesses that may not be able to. In some ways technology can help level the playing field, but only to the extent that it is accessible and usable by all. The 2021 #worlddayofsocialjustice commemoration supports efforts by the international community to search for solutions to achieve sustainable development, poverty eradication, the promotion of full employment and decent work, universal social protection, gender equality and access to social well-being and justice for all. Consequently, it aims at fostering dialogue with member States and relevant UN institutions and other stakeholders on actions needed to overcome the digital divide, provide decent work opportunities,, and protect labour and human rights in the modern era of digital technologies. 03.01.2022 Charities strengthen the fabric and functioning of society, contributing the equivalent of 8.5% to Australia’s GDP, employing more people than the mining and ma...nufacturing sectors combined, and supporting those in need across the community. But right now, the Australian economy is in a crisis that has shaken the charities sector, along with the livelihoods of many beneficiaries, clients, employees, and volunteers. Published today by SVA and Centre for Social Impact, our new report ‘Taken for Granted? Charities’ role in economic recovery’ finds that while JobKeeper will keep many charities viable in the short term, 14% will still be at risk of becoming unviable, 44% will make an operating loss by September 2021, and 180,000 people are at risk of becoming unemployed by September 2021. The report calls for urgent reforms to support the sector, by ensuring the financial viability of charities, building capacity to improve impact, and decreasing demand for charity crisis services. We encourage you to read and share the report widely amongst your networks as we continue to advocate for the resilience and viability of the charity sector, and work to #BuildBackBetter.
