20.01.2022 This is Maombi. She is currently enrolled in a free Permaculture Design Certificate course in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement sponsored by Ethos Foundation and taught by Bemeriki of @rwamwanjayouthinnovation and his new apprentice teacher, Rolande from Nakivale Refigee Settlement, we have also sponsored. She gathered this story for us to share with you. Maombi is fled DRCongo in 2010 with 3 children after her husband was lost. She has spent over 10 years in Uganda and now has ...5 children she is raising in her own - one is a full orphan who she has taken in. She loves this permaculture course because it helps her discover new practices that will be important for her and will also help her children get enough food and good health. She will also use these skills to raise funds this to cover some medical needs in her family. After this training Maombi says she will be able to prepare good food for her family, treat some ailments with local herbs, sell some produce and products and can teach others about the knowledge she is getting. I’m this picture she is describing her plans for making sack gardens - tiny gardens that can be placed around homes for quick access to fresh greens. The thirty people doing this course were identified as being most vulnerable orphan carers who needed educational support with permaculture. The @savethechildren organisation helps place children with families. As part of this program we are supporting each member to receive tools, seeds and sops making training. Every day we are supporting programs like this that are making a huge impact in people’s lives . All the teaching is done in local (sometimes multiple languages) addressing the pressing needs of each group. Please support generously if you can. The link is in the bio. Over this year, the goal is to offer free training and resources to 1000 people like Moama - youth too. It costs around $100-150 to provide this support per person (depending on location). Thank you for reading and to everyone who supports #refugees #orphans #carers #permaculture #kitchengarden #tinygarden #sackgarden #microenterprise #peoplecare #goodfood #foodsecurity #permaculturedesigncourse #unhcr

20.01.2022 Here's the heartwarming content we all need on a Sunday. Last week, Billie, the maker of the award-winning beautiful hand-made woollen blanket that is currently up for raffle on www.ethosfoundation.org.au, was interviewed by Noosa News and Sunshine Coast Daily. Billie explains It took three years for me to learn to make one square, One square led to two, two led to three, and before long she was making complete blankets. With two rare chromosomal abnormalities, epilepsy, a...utism and severe obsessive-compulsive disorder, Billie Ballard has had her fair share of challenges. And yet here she is today, creating such stunning pieces of art and putting them up for raffle to help those less fortunate - Billie is a huge inspiration to us. . . . #billiesblanket #raffle #ethosfoundation #permaculture #thankyou See more

20.01.2022 This common 'weed' is known as Hedge Mustard or Wild Mustard and it's found just about everywhere around the world in marginal places. Bonus is it's all edible - the leaves, the seeds, the flowers and it's delicious! Not only that it helps improve the soil and give you an indicator of soil health, provides habitat, and is a medicinal plant. Listen in for tips on how to use it, and all the other uses it has too. I'm always finding food to forage as I walk about the community e...very afternoon - 'weeds' and so many native fruits, berries, leaves and seeds. 15.01.2022 This week we are celebrating NAIDOC week and the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Here is an excerpt from the NAIDOC website (https://www.naidoc.org.au/) that explains the significance of this poster. The National NAIDOC Poster, Shape of Land, was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a Noongar and Saibai Islander man.... Tyrown’s artwork tells the story of how the Rainbow Serpent came out of the Dreamtime to create this land. It is represented by the snake and it forms the shape of Australia, which symbolises how it created our lands. The colour from the Rainbow Serpent is reflected on to the figure to display our connection to the Rainbow Serpent, thus our connection to country. The overlapping colours on the outside is the Dreamtime. The figure inside the shape of Australia is a representation of Indigenous Australians showing that this country - since the dawn of time - Always Was, Always Will Be Aboriginal Land. #NAIDOC2020 #AlwaysWasAlwaysWillBe

14.01.2022 Here is your daily dose of cuteness! This is Bemeriki's daughter with a pumpkin she just harvested from their permaculture garden Her very proud dad, Bemeriki, leads the Permayouth groups in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement, Uganda.

14.01.2022 Jane's women's group in Kenya, tending to their education garden and teaching a new permayouth group. We have just sent them the third payment of $1000, to support the purchase of a Community farm for permaculture education and demonstration for Jane's Women's Group in Kenya. By Christmas we will have finalised the payments needed for them to own this land outright (this will be HUGE for their community). The land will become a secure place for everyone in the community t...o learn and set up micro-enterprises for food security and inspiring a local resilient economy. This will be a huge asset for local women, school children, youth, and farmers. Jane, the leader of the womens group, organised a PDC last year that was funded by Ethos Foundation and she is now launching a new permayouth program in her village too (that will be conducted on this new land). We are delighted to be supporting Jane's wonderful work on an ongoing basis, but it is because of everyones generosity that we were able to. We are seeking to raise the remaining $3000 for the fourth, fifth and sixth (last) installments of the land loan. These are due in October, November and December which are all fast apporaching. Please help us raise the final $3000 by donating or sharing this post. Any help you can offer will help us finalise the land purchase for this not for profit Womens Organisation lead by Jane. To donate and support Jane's community group, head to www.ethosfoundation.org.au and click the donate button at the top right (select the drop down for 'Permaculture Women's Farm, Kenya'). Ethos Foundation is a registered charity and 100% of your donations are sent directly to the community or project that you wish to support. We are working on updating the Ethos Foundation website to make information about the group and their progress more accessible. Thank you for all your wonderful support, it continues to make a huge difference to the lives of Jane and her community in Kenya. . . . . #donations #heartwarming #support #kenya #permaculture #janescommunitygroup #ethosfoundation #gardening #moraggamble #comunity See more

14.01.2022 Right now, Ethos Foundation and @MoragGamble are seeking to raise $2000 to fund @sakina.kiriba.1 so that she can travel from Kenya to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to teach Permaculture. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for her on so many levels! Sakina was born in DRC, but she has been living for 11 years in the Kakuma Refugee Camp where she fled due to political unrest in her part of the country. Read this blog to find out more - https://ourpermacultu...relife.com/sponsor-sakina/ Sakina was sponsored by Ethos Foundation in 2018 to complete her PDC in Uganda, and has been a scholarship recipient of the Permaculture Educators Program through the Permaculture Education Institute (https://permacultureeducationinstitute.org). In her refugee community of Kakuma, she now leads many initiatives including two Permayouth groups (https://permayouth.org) and adult training programs. Recently an organisation called Act in Solidarity with the Vulnerable of War invited Sakina to teach 20 war veterans in DRC about Permaculture. This organisation aims to help support these 20 war veterans, who have suffered hardships during the war and are now homeless due to the destruction of their properties. Sakina will run a program with them to teach Permaculture farming methods. This will help them earn money and begin to rebuild their lives. When Sakina approached Morag recently to help fund her trip, she spoke about what the opportunity would mean for her. I would like to go and teach permaculture in Bukavu (DRC). Firstly because I love my people and have seen the great importance of permaculture and its many benefits. I have been fortunate to be well educated - I would like to share this education so that it can be good for my country and my people too. Help us make this a reality for Sakina! Donate at https://ethosfoundation.org.au/ to support her and ensure she has all the funds to needs to travel safely. 13.01.2022 We are proud to have sponsored this fantastic permayouth/permayouth education program being led by Bemeriki (Rwamwanja Rural foundation LTD) at Unidos Social Centre in Nakivale Refugee Settlement in Uganda in March, organised by Paulinho. It is also how we met Rolande - a new 18yo Permaculture teacher apprentice. This program was co-sponsored by the global Warm Data community and is the first program of the 10,000 communities project of the Club of Rome We also sponsored 2 ...other emerging Permaculture teachers to be there - Dani Amani from a Tanzanian refugee settlement and Safari Mark from an urban refugee community near Kampala. Bemeriki will soon be travelling to teach with their communities too. We have found that this buddying system between refugee settlements is working well to build better skills in practical permaculture design, developing the skills of local teachers and creating a cohesive network in East Africa amongst refugee permaculture graduates. Bemeriki is also soon to start an online mentoring program via What'sApp to help graduates keep learning and sharing - as we do in the Permaculture Education Institute programs. In addition, anyone from these refugee courses can join my online Permaculture Educators Program and make permaculture teaching their focus. We are so delighted that Bemeriki is a member of Permaculture Education Institute team and we are always in awe of what he is able to achieve and inspire with little resources. We have worked out that with between $100-150 pp (depending on the program and location) Bemeriki can offer a full and practical PDC. He teaches 25-30 people at a time and runs at least one course a month. Can you help us keep supporting his work, and others like him. Ethos Foundation sends 100% of your donations directly to programs that really make a difference in the world and in people's lives. Click the donate button on https://ethosfoundation.org.au

13.01.2022 It is so heartwarming to read these lovely words by Krista, who responded immediately when I called for your help last week on behalf of Rose and her women's group to help them buy land for a community permaculture education centre - a place to grow food, teach others, offer a Permayouth program and create micro-enterprises. "It was my birthday on Tuesday and a few family members had given me some money to buy something for myself. Knowing that I really didn't need anythin...g new, I instead decided to donate to the Ethos Foundation, as Rose and her women's group were so close to making their monthly farm instalment! Knowing that a small gesture on my part means I am contributing towards the permaculture education centre, community farm and micro-enterprise hub on the other side of the world, means the world to me! I'm currently studying Morag's Permaculture Design & Teaching course, and can see how life changing permaculture would be to Rose and her community. If we can all donate what we can, imagine the impact we can have on Rose and her community!" - Krista, 14th August 2020 Thank you again Krista, and my sincere thanks to everyone who kindly donated via the Ethos Foundation (https://ethosfoundation.org.au) to the Women's Community Permaculture Farm Program. Your generosity makes a huge difference, and your ongoing support is welcomed. I'll share an update soon of how things are developing with their farm.

12.01.2022 The women’s community permaculture farm that we are helping to buy in Kenya is doing so well! Now Jane and Rose, and the rest of the Women's Group have only 1 month left on their lease until the land is paid off in full. Thank you so much to everyone who has supported these lovely ladies so far. Together we have paid off $5000 toward the past 5 monthly instalments! Your donations have helped to feed and educate so many people and will continue to do so for a long time. We ...only have $1000 left to pay off for the remaining loan instalment. How exciting is that!! This is due on the 14th December but we would love to have it finalised before then. Please help us to complete this purchase and support Jane and Rose’s Community Garden & Education Centre. Donate at our website https://ethosfoundation.org.au/ Thank you for your kindness and support. Morag

11.01.2022 Thank you so much to everyone who purchased a raffle ticket for Billie's blanket over the past few weeks. Together we raised over $4000 to support refugees across the world!! If you missed the video where we drew the winner and chatted with Billie and the Permayouth about where the money raised has gone (because yes, it's already over in the communities) you can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyYfLaCyTxY&t=5s Ethos Foundation is a registered permaculture charity that is actively helping so many people in refugee camps across the world. 10.01.2022 Exciting News! Today we are joining with Permayouth to launch a raffle for this stunning crochet blanket, hand-made by the wonderful Billie Ballard. It is made from pure Bendigo wool and took Billie over 5 weeks to make! Billie is the older sister of Eve, a member of the global Permayouth Group. Billie has autism and has discovered an incredible passion and skill in all things yarn - she loves creating crochet blankets and other items. This particular blanket won her fir...st prize in the Noosa Country Show last year! After hearing about the Permayouth Group in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Billie has asked us to raffle her blanket and give all proceeds to help them access tools and seeds to grow gardens and hopefully buy them a sewing machine too. 1 x Raffle Ticket = $10 (or 12 for $100) Prize: You win this beautiful hand-made blanket. Draw date: We will draw the winner of the raffle using Facebook Live at 5pm on the 1st of September. So make sure you get your raffle tickets before then! How to buy a ticket? Head online to https://ethosfoundation.org.au/ and click the orange donate button. Select to pay the amount of how ever many tickets you wish to buy (e.g. $20 = two tickets), and make a note that it is for 'Billie's Blanket'. Important Note: Due to the size and weight of the blanket, we can only ship it within Australia. Please only purchase a ticket if you are located in Australia (but feel free to donate anyhow and say its for the youth - every dollar goes directly to them). Good luck and thank you!

10.01.2022 Today is International Youth Day 2020! What better time to share these action shots of our new Permayouth group in the Kakuma Refugee Camp, located in Kenya. This group of 10-15yo refugee children, mentored by the wonderful Sakina Kiriba (a Graduate of a Permaculture Education Institute course), have been working hard over the past week to create an edible garden that will help to provide their community with food. Rations in these refugee camps in pandemic times are extrem...ely low. It is a hugely dry area so they have started shaping the land to hold water, are now making compost and collecting mulch. Sakina is about to launch a training program for Mumma's to get more teachers leading more Permayouth Clubs in this enormous refugee camp. Please help us support this training and the resourcing of all Permayouth members with a kit of tools and seeds to grow gardens in their home and community. $35 is a toolkit for one child. $150 is a permaculture certificate for a Permayouth leader. $500 is a watertank for a new community garden/education centre. Go to https://ethosfoundation.org.au/ and please donate generously. Within the donation link, there is a button to make your donation a monthly one. Regular contributions help us so much to support new Permayouth hubs. I guarantee that every dollar reaches the programs. I personally cover an admin costs and the local leaders are trusted teachers of the Permaculture Education Institute. 08.01.2022 I have found that making the conscious choice to refuse plastic when shopping can be extremely rewarding. It can be difficult though, so I've put together this little blog and video to take you through my top tips for reducing your plastic intake. You can find it here https://ourpermaculturelife.com/choose-to-refuse-plastic/ Alternatively, you can find this video and many more on my YouTube channel https://youtu.be/t1bugz1Dt2E

08.01.2022 Did you know that up to 25% of your standard teabag is plastic and that billions of micro plastics shed from the bag into each cup of tea you drink? Swap to loose leaf, use a tea ball, tea pot or plunger. Buy loose tea in bulk from a zero-waste store or with friends. Or swap to homegrown teas. They are simple to grow - even in pots on a balcony or windowsill. You don't need much space. Some of my favourites that I grow just near my kitchen are: lemonbalm, lemon myrtle, mints..., pineapple sage and tulsi. I also love adding fresh turmeric and ginger too. What is your favourite homegrown tea? Feel free to share, and comment below about your great tips. For more information about permaculture, watch my 4 part series https://bit.ly/OPL4partseries At the end of each week I'll collate all the tips and you can download these and any recipes. I'll share the link tomorrow. #permaculture #moraggamble #plasticfreejuly #ourpermaculturelife #permacultureeducationinstitute

07.01.2022 Today (15/10/2020) is World Food Day This day encourages global action toward growth, nourishment and sustainability. Permaculture offers an abundant source of food to all around the world. It can help you grow your own amazing food, become more food secure, and give you the tools to help others create beautiful abundant gardens too, using nature’s methods! ... My goal is to educate people around the world about permaculture and simple, environmentally-conscious living, so that together we can tackle the global food crisis (and in doing so, also tackle the many other crises we are experiencing). I believe that the first step is to look at our own local communities and think about the ways that we can improve food accessibility and quality around us. You could do this by starting a local community garden, creating a barter group and sharing resources in your community, or even something so simple as feeding your families with nutrient rich, home grown food from your permaculture garden. What are you doing in your community this World Food Day? . . . #WorldFoodDay #FoodHeroes #permaculture #permacultureeducation #ourpermaculturelife #foodsecurity #localaction

05.01.2022 This is such a powerful collaboration! This poem was written by Tom from Kitgum, Uganda. He met Eve from the Sunshine Coast, Australia through our recent Global Permayouth Festival and asked her to perform his poem. Watch 'An Imagined Letter From COVID-19 To Humans' written by Tom and performed by Eve here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVquuJOEgqE Eve is one of the co-founders of the Permayouth, and Tom joined a few months ago after receiving a scholarship from the Permaculture Education Institute. So incredible to see these two collaborating from across the globe.

04.01.2022 Bemeriki Bisimwa Dusabe is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), living in Rwamwanja Refugee Settlement in Uganda since 2007 (13 years). He is a professionally trained teacher as well as a social worker in the refugee camp. Bemeriki has been working hard to support his refugee community through permaculture and managing peace and conflict. Bemeriki has been practising permaculture from a young age in his birth country DRC and he continued to practice it when... he moved to Kenya where he lived in the Kakuma refugee camp - Kakuma 2, Zone 2, Block 1. His life has been all about permaculture, though he admits he didnt always understand what permaculture was, other than the normal digging process. Currently, Bemeriki has a scholarship from the Permaculture Education Institute (https://permacultureeducationinstitute.org) to complete both the Permaculture Design Certificate and Permaculture Teacher Certificate through the Permaculture Educators Program While practising permaculture, he aims to promote it in the refugee camp by establishing kitchen gardens in every household and promoting the use of organic rather than chemical products. He bases his teachings on the 12 principles and 3 ethics of permaculture. He now has 25 youth registered to take permaculture course with support from Ethos Foundation (https://ethosfoundation.org.au) and Permaculture Education Institute, and they participate in the global Permayouth weekly gatherings (https://permayouth.org). His vision is to have a school where he will be training youth and all refugees at large. In Rwamwanja, Bemeriki acts as an environmental activist because the environment has been destroyed by his fellow refugees looking for firewood. He is also passionate about youth and women development in the promotion of self-resilience while improving the nutrition status of pregnant women and children in Rwamwanja refugee settlement in Uganda. As a combination of these two passions, he founded a community based organisation called Rwamwanja Rural Foundation Limited (RRF Ltd) - its main vision is to provide a range of positive education for children and adults including permaculture and health care. Bemeriki would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the Ethos Foundation because this helps him support the youth, and he is thankful to the Permaculture Education Institute for his scholarship. He wants to let you all know he is now using the skills gained from the course to train and help others. Bemeriki and the youth have already created a community garden, many home kitchen gardens and they now designing a 2 acre permaculture community farm.

04.01.2022 The members of the Womens Self-Help group in Kambiri, western Kenya have joined in song to thank everyone who donated toward tools and seeds last month. 03.01.2022 Sakina Kiriba is doing an amazing job teaching new Permayouth teachers in Kakuma refugee camp Thanks to everyone who donated to https://ethosfoundation.org.au to sponsor this. Please keep donating - there are so many people in refugee camps waiting to learn. We send 100% to the communities for permaculture education and community farms.

02.01.2022 An interesting and thought-provoking video made by Bemeriki (Permaculture Education Institute https://permacultureeducationinstitute.org student) and the Rwamwanja Permayouth: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HI4uS1HZRKU The video explains the methods they use for natural water reservation and waste management to help support their community. Jackson, one of the boys featured in the video, makes a great point that many people in refugee camps around the world are youths and ar...e going to be the leaders of the future. By teaching them, we are helping to create lasting change and hopefully a better quality of life for future generations. Give it a watch and share widely. 02.01.2022 I love my home-made or found compostable produce bags. Why not sew your own long-lasting bags that can be washed, mended and then finally composted at the end of their life. It's a little thing, but it builds a different relationship with the foods we choose, our shopping habits and the waste we create. Choosing foods we can scoop into bags ourselves shifts where and how we shop. If there's no zero-waste store near you, why not organise a bulk foods group with your friends, ...workmates or neighbours. While the children are home, why not make some bags with them. Let them pick the fabric and teach them to sew these simple bags - then they'll remember to take them, and remind you too! 01.01.2022 Bread is such a staple food in most households and it usually comes wrapped in single-use bags with those throw-away clips. Many supermarkets do take soft plastics now and recycle them, but most plastics never reach these collection points, and like I've said before - refusing first, and reusing is a better option than recycling. Best is choosing naked bread - homemade or from a bakery. Take your own bag and enjoy gorgeous 'real' bread. Enjoy and please share freely. 01.01.2022 We raised $400 from donations at the August Global Permayouth Festival! As soon as the money came through, we sent it straight off to the Permayouth groups in Kakuma (Kenya) and Rwamwanja (Uganda) Refugee camps. Interested to hear what they spent it on? Sakina, leader of the Kakuma Permayouth, printed these books and learning manuals (pictured) that she is now using to teach her youth and adult groups about Permaculture. Bemeriki, leader of the Rwamwanja Permayouth, used ...this money to buy this sewing machine (also pictured) that the group have needed for a while. They are using it now to mend clothes, make masks and also make reusable sanitary pads for the girls and women. Although schools are currently closed due to covid, girls usually have to skip school while on their periods because they don't have access to sanitary items. This will be so helpful, so we want to extend a big THANK YOU from all of us at Ethos Foundation and Permayouth. Please keep the support coming! 01.01.2022 Welcome into my garden for another live during Plastic Free July. Grow what you can, and when you head out to the shops, think of ways you can choose to refuse plastic. So many foods come in their own natural packaging. I know the whole 'plastic-free' idea is so much more challenging during the pandemic, especially in places where there is still high alert. Just do what you can, and see if there's new ways of thinking about how and where you source your food. PERMACULTURE RE...SOURCES Free 4 part permaculture series (https://bit.ly/OPL4partseries).
