23.01.2022 This Asbestos Awareness Week, 23 29 November 2020, The ETU is reminding tradies to be asbestos aware because it lurks in more places than you’d think. Work health and safety (WHS) laws prohibit work involving asbestos apart from in specific circumstances where you are required to follow strict safety rules. The law may also prevent you from removing asbestos yourself, and if you are allowed, you must follow strict safety precautions and use the right Personal Protective Equ...ipment. Commercial and public buildings built before a certain date are required to have an asbestos register but that’s not the case for homes, even though they are often workplaces too. Where might asbestos be in a home? You can find out here www.asbestossafety.gov.au/find-out-about-asbe/asbestos-home Asbestos becomes dangerous once the fibres are disturbed, become airborne and then inhaled. This can happen if you’re sanding, drilling, cutting or sawing asbestos. Asbestos is a known carcinogen and inhaling asbestos fibres can cause a number of life-threatening diseases including pleural disease, asbestosis, mesothelioma and lung cancer. Don't risk the possible health effects of asbestos exposure. The World Health Organization says there is no known safe level of exposure to asbestos fibres. Watch this video about asbestos exposure in the workplace here. https://vimeo.com/446982099

21.01.2022 18 ETU members from the Power Industry are coming from as far as towns like Quiplie, St George, and Roma to battle it out on the title fight card set down for tomorrow night Saturday 14th November in Toowoomba. They have put their hand up to jump in the boxing ring to raise some money for a charity that is doing fantastic work in the Toowoomba region. To Donate go to https://www.gofundme.com/f/dan-mcgaw-corporate-fight-/share? Tickets are also still available for Tomorrow n...ight These union members work with High Voltage Electricity every day and know the dangers that exist. They are highly skilled and trained to deal with these risks, but their dangers are nothing compared to those that suffer head injuries and require urgent treatment. We are raising money to benefit The Great White Campaign, and any donation will help make an impact. The TGW Campaign aims to see a neurosurgical service based here in the Garden City. After the tragic passing of local Toowoomba boxer Braydon Smith, it has highlighted the need to have a neurosurgeon permanently based in Toowoomba. This will save lives and leave an incredible legacy in honour of Braydon ‘The Great White’ Smith. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to many families in Toowoomba. To Donate go to https://www.gofundme.com/f/dan-mcgaw-corporate-fight-/share? Thanks in advance

19.01.2022 ACTU responds to appalling Federal Court dsecision. 27 November 2020 Court rejects Qantas workers bid for sick leave Qantas workers, including those battling cancer and heart disease, will not be allowed to access accrued sick leave after a federal court ruling this morning.... The ruling bars workers from accessing sick leave after Qantas stood down workers at the beginning of the pandemic. Several workers have been forced to accept redundancies during this period in order to pay medical bills. Qantas has previously been found to have misused and underpaid the JobKeeper wage subsidy and is currently attempting to outsource all baggage handling, ramp workers and cleaning jobs. Last year Qantas CEO Alan Joyce was the highest paid CEO in Australia and the highest paid airline executive anywhere in the world. Quotes attributable to ACTU Secretary Sally McManus Qantas has abandoned long-term workers with serious medical issues by refusing to allow access to sick leave during a stand-down. This is a deliberate decision that Qantas and Alan Joyce have made. They have a responsibility to these workers, some of whom are dealing with life-threatening medical issues, and have the money to pay out sick leave. They are refusing to do so. These workers are uniquely disadvantaged, being stood down and also unable to pursue work elsewhere due to illness. No worker in Australia should have to take a redundancy to cover medical bills, least of all during a pandemic. Qantas has attacked workers at every turn during this crisis. They are currently trying to outsource thousands of jobs in baggage handling and cleaning, in an attempt to cut wages and conditions for workers. We stand with the airline workers in their unions who are continuing to fight for fairness in the face of appalling conduct from Qantas. The Morrison Government has walked away from the airline industry, leaving thousands of workers unsure about their futures during an unprecedented crisis. See more

09.01.2022 ACTU calls for government cooperation to halve insecure work ACTU Secretary Sally McManus will call for state and federal governments to work with unions to halve insecure work over the next 10 years in a speech to the National Press Club today. This year, the pandemic laid bare the dangers of insecure work for individuals and the health and stability of the economy.... Australia has one of the highest rates of non-standard forms of employment in the OECD. Our extremely high rate of insecure work has meant that this year a third of Australian workers have been without sick leave during a pandemic. Our high rate of insecure work is not an accident. Successive coalition governments have refused to act to regulate labour hire and the gig economy, reduce the use of short-term contracts and create a working definition of casual employment which does not allow employers to class working people as casuals to strip them of pay and conditions. The recovery from this crisis presents an opportunity to address systemic weaknesses within the economy and to ensure that Australia’s precious social safety net is maintained and strengthened. Quotes attributable to ACTU Secretary Sally McManus, Insecure work is a fundamental weakness in the economy. It has stripped pay and rights from millions of workers. Our rate of insecure work is not normal, and it did not happen by accident. Legislation has enabled it, and both state and federal governments have the power to address it. We can halve the number of insecure jobs in the next decade. Insecure work has left a third of working people without sick leave during the pandemic, but after the pandemic is over it will still leave millions without job security and basic entitlements. We want to work with state, territory and federal governments to end this crisis. Governments at all levels have the power to reduce the rate of insecure work. Working people many in insecure work have carried us through the pandemic and recession. We need to act now to ensure that future generations have the rights and conditions that all Australian workers should be able to rely on.
