25.01.2022 Drying clay... If clay is dried out too quickly it can form cracks or separate along joins. It is best to dry clay slowly by covering it with draped plastic or in a draft free cupboard or shelf. The ambient room temperature effects the speed of clay drying. In our hot Perth summers, clay can dry very quickly causing a few headaches in the studio!

The bowl can have a hole in the base so that it holds a little cactus or succulent or no hole so it can be used as a normal bowl. There is nothing normal about these bowls/planters though. 21.01.2022 The colour of fired clay is determined by the natural ingredients in the clay body and the temperature the clay is fired to. Clay with a high iron content give brown hews and high fired clay is often a bit darker in colour than low fired clay. You can also add colourants to clay bodies change the colour. I add stable coloured stains to my clay body to tint the final product. I have hues of pink, yellow, green, blue and grey in my colour pallet.

19.01.2022 To turn clay into ceramic it is fired in a kiln. Most potters twice fire their pieces. The first firing is called bisque firing. The kiln reached about 1000oC and the clay chemically fuses together, turning into ceramic. At this temperature the body is still very porous and quite brittle. This allows the ceramic to be glazed without disintegrating in the glaze bucket and also reduced imperfections bubbling up in the glaze surface.
