25.01.2022 preconception care ~ It is estimated each year 10% of Australian women will fall pregnant. Increasing evidence supports the importance of preconception care for improving short-term and long-term outcomes for both mother and child. Recognising the modifiable risks will no doubt improve a mother’s outcome of conceiving and sustaining a healthy pregnancy. Poor maternal health and diet prior to and in the early stages of conception has been linked with impaired foetal and inf...ant growth, poor birth outcomes not to mention increased cardiovascular and metabolic risks in later years. Not sure whether you’re doing everything you can to optimise your chance of a healthy pregnancy? Reach out to your Naturopath for support, starting with preconception care. Preconception care adopts a holistic approach which aims to optimise the health and well-being of couples prior to conception in order to maximise their chances of a healthy and viable pregnancy. 17.01.2022 THE BEST TIME TO DRINK COFFEE ~ Due to cortisol production which occurs during 8am-9am each morning, the best time to drink coffee & achieve a caffeine hit is between 9:30am-11:30am after our cortisol levels have dropped and we have woken up naturally. Drinking caffeine too late in the afternoon delays melatonin production which can affect our quality of sleep. It is best to avoid drinking coffee at least 6 hours before bed. ... 16.01.2022 ENDOMETRIOSIS ~ Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition that is thought to affect 5-10% of menstruating women. It is defined by the abnormal growth of uterine endometrial tissue outside of its normal location. These ectopic cells form inflammatory cysts and lesions that can cause debilitating pain, scar tissue and adhesions. Other symptoms can include:... ~ chronic menstrual pain ~ painful intercourse ~ heavy bleeding ~ lower back pain ~ infertility ~ painful/ irregular bowel motions ~ irregular cycle length ~ extreme fatigue & more Diagnosis of endometriosis is commonly delayed as the diagnostic procedure requires a pelvic laparoscopy - a fairly invasive surgery. The visual recognition of endometriosis is also dependant on the ability of the surgeon to recognise its different appearances. Many women have a laparoscopy to be told they don’t have endo, when actually it was missed.. Hence the importance of finding a gynaecologist who specialises in endometriosis and excision surgery. 2 months ago I was diagnosed with endometriosis through a pelvic laparoscopy. After many years of painful/irregular periods + an array of other symptoms, multiple blood tests, ultrasounds & various opinions from doctors & specialists, I finally received a diagnosis. Since my surgery I have had my first ever pain-free period!!! (I actually didn’t even recognise it as my period at first because I would usually experience debilitating pain along with it ). Currently, I am working with my gynaecologist & naturopath on regulating my cycle using herbs, correcting my energy levels & vitamin deficiencies as well as healing my body post surgery. *reminder - PAINFUL PERIODS AREN’T NORMAL*

11.01.2022 PARASITES ~ Parasites are microscopic organisms that invade the gastrointestinal tract where they live alongside a host of other good and bad bacteria and fungi. Contracting a parasite is more common than people assume. You can pick them up from unwashed fruits & vegetables, uncooked meats, in contaminated water, even from your pets. ... Symptoms can often be asymptomatic or you can have a similar experience to myself and suffer from a number of symptoms from abdominal discomfort and bloating to constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence & more. I was diagnosed with parasites through a stool sample and am currently working alongside a Naturopath, using traditional western herbal medicine to strengthen my digestive function and help my body rid itself of parasites. I have been using anti-parasitic herbs such as wormwood & mugwort, probiotics including Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacteria & L. Bulgaricus and incorporating anti-parasitic foods into my diet such as garlic and pumpkin seeds. Always consult with a herbal practitioner before beginning any treatment as many herbs interact with medications. See more

08.01.2022 DRY BODY BRUSHING ~ Our skin plays a vital role in the elimination of toxins. The accumulation of dead skin cells decreases the skin’s ability to detoxify. Hence, the removal of dead skin cells is paramount. Dry body brushing works to remove those dead skin cells and open up the skin’s pores. Using a loofah or natural bristled brush start on the soles of your feet and move up your body. Brushing upwards to stimulate the movement of lymphatic fluid. ... Include this simple process in your morning routine before a shower. Avoid brushing any sensitive, irritated or broken skin & remember to clean your brush with a natural soap each month. See more

02.01.2022 always broadening my knowledge on the healing power of plants ~ Prior to the twentieth century, medicinal plants were the main resource for western health care. Today, many of our most important drugs are derived from plants. An example is the heart medicine digoxin derived from the plant foxglove (Digitalis purpurea). The therapeutic activity of a plant is due to its complex chemical nature with different parts of the plant providing certain therapeutic effects. As a naturopath, I believe that we can use plants as medicine, alongside western medicine, to treat various health conditions.
