21.01.2022 10 days to go for the 2019 Education Appeal! We are in the final days of our Education Appeal for an Education Coordinator who will develop curriculum specific... materials.To-date our community have donated $90,000 and we still have $20,000 raise by 30 June. Our Regional Manager, Western Sydney, Rosalind Mearns, highlights the importance of teaching students about the past; Learning about the past gives students a sense of community and empathy for others. If you can understand where you’ve come from, how things have changed over time, and why others might see things differently, you can connect with people and gain a better insight into the world we live in today. Rosalind manages Old Government House - National Trust of Australia NSW and Experiment Farm Cottage - National Trust of Australia NSW, two places that are enormously relevant to today’s students. Old Government House sits on the traditional lands of the Burramatta Darug, it was a site of first contact, and it became the administrative heart of the convict system. As the Governor’s residence, decisions were made within its walls that changed the way Australia developed as a nation. Experiment Farm Cottage is equally important as it was the site of the first land grant in Australia. It offers a unique opportunity to tell the story of how the introduction of European-style farming led to the dispossession of the Aboriginal peoples. Please help up to bring these stories, and others, to life for students donate now! https://www.nationaltrust.org.au/donate-nsw/

21.01.2022 We are in full bloom at Experiment Farm Cottage - National Trust of Australia NSW, have your dose of horticultural #HeritageAtHome with our #Borage (Borago Offi...cinalis). Borage has been used in Europe for medicine for over 2000 years. It is a common garden plant and has attractive blue and purple flowers. It leaves a taste like cucumber and it can be used in salads, or to add to cold drinks to make them more refreshing. It could be made into a tea to treat #colds, #fever, #asthma, and #depression. The leaves and flowers were made into a syrup with sugar or honey, for people with insomnia to help them get to sleep. The plant could be chopped up and put in a steaming hot cloth. This was applied to the skin to relieve pain and swelling from insect bites, which caused a lot of suffering for early colonists in Australia. The seeds were collected and made into an oil that was used when strong doses of borage were needed. Photo and story by Alasdair Taylor. See more

Have you ever looked closely at one of rosemary’s little #flowers? Culpeper, the popular English herbalist writing in the mid-17th century, and whose work has informed physicians, pharmacists and herbalists ever since, recommended the flowers be eaten every morning with bread and salt to improve eyesight. Among many other uses for #rosemary, he also remarked that: The flowers and conserve made of them are singularly good to comfort the heart, and to expel the contagion of the pestilence So, a #calmative anti-depressant and expeller of plagueSuch power in a tiny flower!
