This week well also be sending two New Zealand Army Combat Engineer Sections as well as a command element. Our support will deploy by Royal Australian Air Force C-17 Globemaster III aircraft and one of our Hercules aircraft from Base Ohakea on a number of flights until Wednesday. 01.01.2022 The Memorial has unveiled a new memorial dedicated to, and created by, military working dogs and their handlers. Military working dogs have served alongside Aus...tralias defence forces since the First World War, and continue to play a vital role in domestic and international operations today. The memorial titled Circling into sleep unveiled this morning in the Memorials Sculpture Garden, honours generations of dogs who have served, given their unconditional loyalty and, in many cases, their lives, to a common cause. The ashes of Aussie, Military Working Dog 426, were interred within the memorial on 4 December 2019. As a military working dog, Aussie served in Australian domestic and international operations including the Solomon Islands in 2004 and four deployments to Afghanistan with the Explosive Detection Dog Team. Described as a tireless worker, Aussie began to slow down after retirement and died in 2017, aged 16. Circling into sleep was created by renowned artist Steven Holland, with help from an Explosive Detection Dog called Billie and her handler. Billie was trained to walk in a tight circle on a bed of soft clay to create the paw-print track which spirals into the memorial, representing the steps of a dog as it circles into sleep. 01.01.2022 Being away from home can be tough at the best of times, but it was extremely hard for Australian Army Private Daniel Norton when he received terrible news from ...back home. Deployed to Afghanistan as part of Force Protection Element 13 based at Camp Qargha, Kabul, Private Norton was returning from a task when he received news that his mate from his hometown in Armidale had passed away at 23. It was devastating, especially considering he was so young," he said. The hardest part was being so far away, not being able to be physically there for my mates and family back home. In memory of John, Private Norton ran 23 laps of Camp Qargha wearing body armour weighing about 12 kilograms.
