25.01.2022 Family photo! Eyre Bird Observatory 2nd March, 2020

24.01.2022 Sadly, due to Covid-19 Eyre Bird Observatory are no longer taking visitors.

24.01.2022 Our first Rainbow Bee-eater for the season - they have travelled down from the north.

24.01.2022 Twilight Cove excursion 3rd March - beautiful scenery!

24.01.2022 There is nowhere like the Eyre Bird Observatory!

24.01.2022 Eyre Bird Observatory has an average annual rainfall of about 300mm. Water has been a constant issue. Rainwater is the only stored tank water for guests and caretakers. But on some rare days it can rain and rain and rain. Caretakers Bill and Judy experienced that in 2017 when the track was washed away at Green Bottle Junction and recently Allan and Wendy measured 75mm in the rain gauge on one day. The south tank overflow was spectacular and the track suffered a wash out. Damage to the track at the 4km mark has now been repaired.

23.01.2022 Some more great photos this time from one of our guests, Willem Heyneker. Thanks Willem. If you can't get out to EBO and want to see some Banded Stilts, the Rottnest Island lakes are teeming with Stilts. But for a variety of beautiful birds, both beach and bush, you can't beat EBO. Banded Stilts, Pied Oyster-catcher, Sooty Oyster-catcher, Inland Dotterel, Red-necked Stint, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper and Spotted Pardalote

23.01.2022 Here at EBO we conduct weekly bird surveys along Kanidal Beach. In the previous few weeks we have seen migratory shorebirds passing through. Resident shorebirds, including Red-capped Plovers and Pied Oystercatchers, have been observed breeding along the beach. As shown in one of the photographs, RCP's use a "broken wing" display to lure potential predators away from their chicks. We were excited to sight RCP chicks recently! Additionally, we collect rubbish that has washed u...p along the beach each week. Considering the remote location of EBO, it is saddening to see how much litter arrives on our shores. We record all the debris collected and send our data to Tangaroa Blue. During the recent "Field Techniques in Bird Studies" course, we found a 400m fishing net buried in the sand near Twilight Cove. It took twelve of us an hour to retrieve! See more

19.01.2022 Nothing like a group of busy noisy babblers to make you smile

18.01.2022 This year’s Photography course, facilitated by Keith Lightbody was a success, with participants photographing species such as Major Mitchells, Blue Breasted Fairy-wren and Brush Bronzewing to name a few. These images were taken by Keith during the course. More photos taken by Keith can be found at http://www.zardec.net.au/keith/photos.htm

17.01.2022 Did you see ABC "Backroads"? See Beverley's great photo of the 'two bobs' coming for a drink on a hot day at the south veranda birdbath! We recently watch majors feeding on the beach and running down the dunes. Wedjie was ready for take off on the scarp in a strong wind.

16.01.2022 Some painting maintenance while we are closed due to COVID-19 - will be spick and span when we re-open!

16.01.2022 Lots of action today!

15.01.2022 Recent guest Stephen Reynolds gave caretakers, Wendy and Alan, some different surprises when he discovered a Chocolate Wattle Bat in the curtains of the Dune Room and Mitchell's Short- tailed snake at Burnabbie. There's more to EBO than birds!

15.01.2022 Eerie mist at Eyre Bird this morning. Soon cleared away to a beautiful autumnal temperature - a beautiful place to be at this time of the year

13.01.2022 We are still here!

13.01.2022 Burnabbie about 1972 courtesy of Keith Lightbody's archives and 2019 courtesy of my iPhone 6. Very little of the main building remaining and one chook/vegie house still standing. Hopefully it will still be there for a long time for others to visit and see the amazing lined well. Our heritage to be preserved.

07.01.2022 Got some free time next month? Come and stay in our heritage listed homestead, nestled among the Mallee and dunes, a ten minute walk from the beach. See dolphins, beautiful sunsets, explore the many walk trails and best of all, learn about BIRDS! We currently have five spaces left on our Bird Appreciation Course (21st-27th February 2021) facilitated by the wonderful Dr Holly Kirk! Learn the basics of bird identification and survey methodology. Activities will include excursio...ns to Twilight Cove and the old station ruins at Burnabbie, guided night walks and participation in Australia's longest running beach count of shorebirds. Participants will learn how to identify passerines, shorebirds and sea birds by sight, behaviour and call. There will also be free time to explore your unique surroundings, gaze at the stars or just enjoy a drink on the verandah! Contact us via Facebook or email ([email protected]) for further information or to secure your place.

06.01.2022 Raven claiming a camel carcass on Blue Bush Plain. Always fun watching Majors jostle for position at the 'bar'

03.01.2022 Another beautiful Eyre sunset!

03.01.2022 Pacific Golden Plover we saw at Nine Mile today.

03.01.2022 Everyone on the Bird Appreciation Course (21-27 Feb 2021), led by the knowledgeable and engaging Dr Holly Kirk, enjoyed themselves immensely and learned so much in the short time we had together. 47 bird species were identified, and the team covered bird ID and surveying techniques over a range of various terrains available from the home base of the Eyre Bird Observatory. Photos attached are the team heading off on an early morning start (with caretaker Rex), a beautiful Brush Bronzewing, and Blue-breasted Fairy Wren. (bird photos attributed to another guest Samantha Wright.)

03.01.2022 Brown Falcon surveying the surroundings at Eyre Bird Observatory March 1st

02.01.2022 Back at Eyre after a year. It's just as wild and beautiful. Today we had fierce winds which covered us in fine white sand.

02.01.2022 Three 'sides' of the house last week. Sunrise over the veggie patch, looking east full moon over the house as the sunsets in the west and thick morning 7am fog towards weather station. What more could you want? Maybe some birds!

01.01.2022 Some great photos from current EBO caretaker Alan Pilkington: Brown Falcon, Double-banded Plover, Pacific Golden Plover, Brown Goshawk and Terek Sandpiper.
