24.01.2022 Ever wondered what a healthy plate of food should look like? The British Association of Nutrition Therapists gives us these guides. See how half the plate is made up of leafy greens, salads, and other non-root veg.... The 'fight the fat' handout is for people whose goal is to lose a bit of weight over the long-term, and includes a bit more protein, less root veg and whole grains and more veggies! Ever wondered how big a portion is? Rather than calorie counting, I recommend using the size of your palm for meat and fruit, and the size of your fist for vegetables. Easy! When you work with a practitioner, such as myself, we get into personalising your nutritional plan and looking at the underlying causes of your health issues.

24.01.2022 Garlic is amazing stuff! Eaten in the right way it is anti-microbial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, and supports detoxification pathways ... When garlic is crushed it releases allicin, the phytonutrient thought to be responsible for garlic's healing properties.... Cooking destroys the enzyme though, so even if you crush your garlic, little allicin may be produced if you immediately through it in a hot pan. HOT TOP: Instead leave garlic for 10 minutes once crushed for the allicin to be formed, and it will remain on cooking, and you'll still receive the benefits.

23.01.2022 Have you heard of resistant starch? It's a type of starch that resists digestion and feeds your good gut bacteria, which reduce inflammation and strengthen your gut lining. Unripe bananas are a good source... Also, when pasta, potatoes, and rice are cooked and then cool, the sugars in them partly convert to resistant starch. And so when the leftovers are eaten, they cause a smaller spike in blood sugar than freshly cooked. They even keep this resistant starch if the cooled food is then re-heated! Feeding your gut bugs and reducing inflammation!

23.01.2022 An interesting article on how captain cook used nutrition, fermented foods, and fibre to keep his crew healthy and to help with PTSD. It's great that we are getting these foods back into our diet. https://buff.ly/2LrzcX7... #sauerkraut #fermentedfoods #ptsd

22.01.2022 Hi all, just a reminder that I'm running a free detox through food challenge next week (starts November 4th). We'll be looking at how diet can support the natural detoxification capacities of our liver, skin, kidneys, and lungs. To be honest, I wanted to do this myself but I thought I'd open it open to a small group of interested people on Facebook so that we can do this together. You can join the group now - there's already some really great information there from the Instit...ute of Functional Medicine. We start on the 4th November. 21.01.2022 A new study from Imperial College London shows antibodies are falling within months following CoVid infection. This suggests a lack of lasting immunity following infection, and raises concerns over the long-term effectiveness of vaccines. However, antibodies aren't our only defence against the virus. there are also T-Regulatory (T-Reg cells) for example which reduce inflammation associated with an infection (but are depressed with COVID-19 infection). Research is progressing... into supporting these T-Reg cells. As a Nutritional Therapist and Functional Medicine practitioner, I can also see that there is a lot we can do to support our T-Reg immune system cells, and there are lifestyle and nutritional changes we can take to lessen the severity of an infection and possibly reduce our chances of catching the virus. We know nutrients such as Zinc, Vitamin D and C are important, as is maintaining a healthy weight, reducing inflammation in the body and maintaining overall good health. Good sleep, and managing stress levels, are also support our immune system. I would love to see a focus on holistic nutritional and lifestyle strategies as a society as COVID is still rampant in many countries.. https://www.imperial.ac.uk//coronavirus-antibody-prevalen/ #nutrition #functionalmedicine #COVID19

18.01.2022 Are you interested in understanding your hormones and how they may be affecting your health? Maybe you are tired all the time or suspect 'adrenal fatigue', have issues with your cycle, or something else makes you suspect a hormonal issue, or maybe you just want to optimise your health. The DUTCH test is probably the most advanced hormone test on the market, and is more complete than standard testing through your GP.... It includes testing for: Total and free cortisol including metabolites (stress hormones) Melatonin (helps us get to sleep) Estrogen Metabolites (metabolic and cycle related - affects everything!) Androgen metabolites (mood, PCOS, sex drive) Oxidative stress (cellular damage) Neurotransmitter metabolites (mood and cognition) Nutritional organic acids (nutrient and vitamin levels) Cortisol awakening response ('adrenal fatigue', and immune system) Optional testing includes: Map hormones through a full menstrual cycle Additional insomnia marker. I offer a service that includes the test (which can be done at home), and a one-hour consultation to help you understand how the results relate to your health and what they mean for you. https://buff.ly/2oKERju PS/ DUTCH test has nothing to do with the country but refers to the dried urine test for comprehensive hormones #hormonetesting #nutrition #healthyeating #functionalmedicine #biohacking

18.01.2022 This article is a bit geeky (which is why I love it!) Ginger is a fantastic food for reducing inflammation in our guts, and is a delicious addition to recipes or teas. These scientists found that ginger affected a type of gut bacteria that produced a messenger molecule (IL-22) which has been shown to promote tissue repair in the gut lining (reduce 'leaky gut'), and reduce inflammation in the gut.... We also know ginger can help with parasite and yeast overgrowth in the gut. Magic stuff.

17.01.2022 Hi there, Steve Ward here from Fairfield Nutrition. I want to start sharing a few testimonials so that you can get an idea of what it's like to work with me. Message me (using the Send Message button below) if you think that I may be able to help you. This first one is from Cass:... "Stephen's nutritional advice and support have greatly improved my quality of life! I had significant chronic abdominal pain, worsened by surgery, where I could no longer function independently and nothing was helping to improve the situation. He listened to my complex medical history and took into account my food allergies and intolerances to create a food plan that was balanced and simple to follow."

To find our how this works in practice, check out this blog post on my web site: https://buff.ly/2NGTyzX #leakygut #intestinal permeability #functionalmedicine #nutrition

12.01.2022 I've written a free eBook, 'Recipes for a Happy Gut', a while ago.. And I've just made some significant changes to it: I've divided the recipes into two stages that are now part of a gut healing journey. Stage 1 is REPAIR where recipes avoid foods such as gluten and dairy which can cause inflammation in the gut. High FODMAP foods are also not included, but health promoting foods are included... Stage 2 is RECOVERY that re-introduces foods that are higher in prebiotics in order to boost gut bacteria diversity and support gut health. You can get the book using the link below. You'll need to signup to my newsletter, but if you don't want to receive that, you can unsubscribe straight away https://buff.ly/2RabFO6

11.01.2022 This Turmeric latte is now one of my favourites, and soothes my gut when I need it and is always tasty! Oh, and turmeric also supports detoxification, acts as anti-oxidant, and reduces inflammation. It is also super easy to make - you first make the paste ahead of time and just add a teaspoon of it to milk (nut or dairy) to make the latte.... Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and helps the gut and may even help people with depression. Just make sure you don't spill it anyway. The yellow can really stain. It can also give you a yellow mustache if you aren't careful

11.01.2022 Facing chronic health issues is hard and it can affect the way we think and our state of mind. But change is always possible, and can be exciting! That's certainly the way I felt when I first started reading about #FunctionalMedicine, eating a more #ancestral diet, clearing out the cupboard of sugar and re-stocking with healthy foods. You can take the first step today by simply imagining what it would be like to regain your health and vitality... Sometimes, the simple act of... imagination can act as the first step to forming new pathways in the brain that can start us on the path. So take two minutes, right now, to imagine how that would feel. To be healthy and well, to do the things you want to do. Really embody how you would feel about yourself and your life, and what you could do with it. Is their another small step you could take to continue your journey? Then imagine yourself looking back on this exercise, sometime in the future, and how it started you on your path to wellness. Feels good right? And it is always possible! Beginning a long journey always begins with the first steps, and making a small first step already places you on the healing path. #selfcare

06.01.2022 This comes as no surprise! In some people, it appears that depression is related to inflammation in the body and when steps are taken to reduce that inflammation, then depression decreases.. There are many ways to reduce inflammation in the body such as... Keeping hydrated, and not drinking too much alcohol Eating lots of fats rich in omega-3s such as oily fish A Mediterranean, or a Mediterranean-Paleo, diet with lots of olive oil Eating anti-oxidant foods such as brightly coloured veggies and fruits Healing the gut and removing other infections Avoiding toxins in water, food and the environment Taking steps to reduce or avoid obesity Spices such as Tumeric Supplements such as Boswellia, and Curcumin Eating a nutrient-dense diet with all the vitamins and co-factors your body needs to function well :)

05.01.2022 Considering the body as a system, or as a set of inter-connected systems as Functional Medicine does, it should come as no surprise that many medications don’t just affect our symptoms, but also affect how we think and feel .. Diet and lifestyle changes have none of these issues! https://buff.ly/2QVoVVT #functionalmedicine #foodasmedicine

02.01.2022 When you think of a detox, what do you think of? Maybe it’s health gurus promoting juice cleanses, yoga, clean living and abstinence from alcohol. This might make you feel better, but the real meaning of detoxification goes a lot deeper.. Find out about the real meaning of detoxification, and how to support in this new blog post..... #detox #detoxification #foodasmedicine

02.01.2022 Watch out! Toxins can accumulate in our bodies over a lifetime. We get rid of them through the body's innate detoxification capacity. That is our lungs, kidney, liver and skin. But the number and amount of toxins we are exposed to is increasing in recent years and our detox capacity can be overwhelmed. Sometimes we need to give these detoxification processes a helping hand through nutrition and lifestyle (best done with a practitioner such as myself) to help reduce the burden... of toxins in the body. Message me if you think you could benefit! This can particularly useful for people who have a wide range of seemingly unrelated symptoms and chronic health conditions. #detox #detoxification #toxicworld #functionalmedicine

02.01.2022 My clients achieve great results by staying consistent. Most of the time that is.. There are ups and downs but most importantly ... They show up. They choose to start the journey and are now doing the work that is designed according to their abilities and goals.... In order to create change we need to make a start! Starting is the most important. When we start, things will fall into place. It's not a question of will and having it all planned out. We need to make a leap and begin. Are you ready?
