25.01.2022 The Home Stretch campaign is calling on all parties this NT election to commit to legislative reform that will provide young people in Out of Home Care the right to continued care up to the age of 21. Around half of those young people leaving care aged 18 face unemployment, homelessness, pregnancy or jail within the first year. Such situations could be avoided by young people having the option to remain in care or return to care until the age of 21. According to the Australia...n Institute of Health and Welfare, the Northern Territory has 1067 children in Out-of-Home Care and 318 carer households. Last year, 83 young people aged 15-17 years were discharged from Out of Home Care - more than 89 per cent of those in care are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children. "We call it Home Stretch because it is vital we finish the job and not call it quits at age 18."

18.01.2022 RAISE THE AGE: Theres been renewed calls for the NT Government to raise the age of young people leaving foster care to 21. A national organisation says the move will reduce crime and homelessness.

Nominations close on Sunday 16 August 2020. Regional events will be planned within COVID-19 safety planning during September.
