25.01.2022 Hi, I have been thinking about how to make this situation give a little back . Family history as it says is all about "family". One thing we often realise to late, is we should have asked more questions of the older generation. Here is the opportunity to turn our situation into something good and for the future. My I suggest you ring an older relative, check they are OK and dont need anything in these crazy times and ask questions about your family history. You really need to have a think about the questions and put it down on paper, because the catching up can take you to many places. Beware family history can be addictive, and is a great way to send sometime. Family is important, people have stories let the conversation begin.

25.01.2022 Still researching people who joined up for WWI from Winchelsea. I have decided to go through the Victorian Births from 1885 to 1900 for any person who may have incorrectly put on Government Attestation documentation the place of birth as somewhere else. I have already found two, the birth rate is also very impressive. The search goes on.

23.01.2022 War Is Never Over: by Cecil L. Harrison War is never over Thought the treaties may be signed... The memories of the battles Are forever in our minds War is never over So when you welcome heroes home Remember in their minds they hold Memories known to them alone War is never over Nam veterans know this well Now other wars bring memories back Of their own eternal hell War is never over For I knew world war two And Ill not forget the battles Or the nightmares that ensue War is never over Those left home to wait know this For many still are waiting It was their farewell kiss War is never over Though we win the victory Still in our minds the battles No freedom is not free! Read this today at Winchelsea.

21.01.2022 Winchelsea WWII Memorial and other Conflicts The Winchelsea RSL is ready to start collecting information for the new cairns of the memorial at Main Street, Winchelsea. This is to complete the vision started with the WWI memorial. The Winchelsea RSL is now ready to start the final stage. We are looking for your help. We want you to nominate relatives, friends or people you know of to be commemorated on the WWII memorial or other conflicts, which is everything else except WWI ...and WWII. Because of the significance of these events, we need to be inclusive and be sensitive in all ways. 1. Historically those nominated to be commemorated on Australian memorials where people nominated by relatives and friends. The Australian Government didnt nominate from the embarkation rolls. These are commemorated on the memorials around the area and in the book Heroes of the Winchelsea District VII. These are already for inclusion and have been taken into account. To be added: 2. Those who settled in Winchelsea and area after the War II and other conflicts. These should be nominated by relatives and or friends. These are far more difficult to find unless nominated. 3. Those born in the area and researched, these may be brought to our attention by members of the public or research. 4. VC winners 5. Those who have a significance to the area and nominated by relatives and or friends. These can be added too, but need to be researched and verified. If you have someone to nominate email me at [email protected] or write to me at 21 Hutcheson Ave, Highton. Looking forward to your help and making sure we included everybody for posterity. See more

20.01.2022 Another one of the missing from our WWII book . Laurence Lindsay Holland born on the 20.06.1926 at Winchelsea. He joined up at Royal Park, Melbourne. He later lived in Diamond Creek. He said his next of kin was Ernest Holland and his number was V516421, he said he was a teacher. So after a little research I found his father was a school teacher at Winchelsea from about 1925 till 1936, from discussions I think the kids called his father "old egg eye". His father died in 1961. His mothers name was Florence Louisa Mitchell. Do you know anything about him?

20.01.2022 Recently, I was approached by a lady looking for her family tree on Ancestry.com. Her family was from Winchelsea and between Tony (my husbands) family and mine the Mawson family there they were on the tree. Also in my book "Heroes WWI" was one of her family Joseph Henry Plant. One of the things very interesting about Joseph, was his arm was tattooed with "J. Plant". Many solders were very worried families would not be told if they died, because they had not been identified, From what I have found the Plant family name had moved out of the area, but many had married into other families.

19.01.2022 The Alsop brothers, Bernard Michael and Frederick Benedict both fought with the 4th Division Machine Gun Company. Frederick was killed in action on the 17.10.1917. Bernard was born on the 25th of January 1896. Bern never got over his brothers death.

19.01.2022 Philip Hunter Holloway born 14.05.1919 at Winchelsea. One of the ones who go away and not in the WWII book. As we get ready to build the WWII memorial at Winchelsea I would like to make sure we have everybody born in Winchelsea, joined up in Winchelsea and after the war made their lives there. What I have discovered recently is we had 179 in the book and I have found to date approx 280 people, including a number of women. So missing a few. I would really like to make sure all are remembered so I have started work. Any help appreciated.

17.01.2022 Can you help? Know of a World War One Honour Board in our region? Geelong Regional Libraries is seeking community assistance to locate World War One Honour Boar...ds across the region. The Geelong Honours Them project will digitise World War One Honour Boards located across the Borough of Queenscliffe, City of Greater Geelong, Golden Plains Shire and Surf Coast Shire. World War One Honour Boards are located widely throughout our community: in clubs, meeting rooms, halls, businesses, schools, community organisations, and even in private homes. Geelong Honours Them wants to locate as many World War One Honour Boards as possible, so their unique history and legacy is preserved. Participating World War One Honour Boards will be transported to the Geelong Heritage Centre (or a dedicated regional studio space) to be carefully photographed, before being returned to their custodians. Geelong Heritage Centre staff will facilitate the archive quality photography and transpose the information displayed on the Honour Board onto a searchable website. 05.01.2022 This year, is 100 years since the end of WWI. So we will look at the year as it goes, January 1918, the Flu pandemic (often called the Spanish Flu) had reached the USA. It will go on to kill one in eighteen of the worlds population, many have calculated, from 1918 till 1919. Killing more than the devastation of WWI. WWI it is thought helped with the spread of the flu.
