11.01.2022 Meet the beautiful Henriques Family, from Cairns. They recently spent a week at our Family Retreat and even headed out to the Reef thanks to one of the amazing local businesses that support our Family Retreat, Big Cat Reef Cruises. The Henriques family also stayed at Ronald McDonald House in Townsville for 22 nights in 2018 when Lulu and her twin sister Frankie were born. Read their story as told to The Cairns Post below. ... Photo: The Cairns Post ---------------------- In her short two years, little Lulu Henriques has gone through more hardships than most, so a little rain before her family embarked on a trip to Green Island did not dampen her smile and bubbly nature. The Brinsmead girl, a twin, was born with down syndrome and cardiac issues and has already had four open-heart surgeries. For most of 2019, she, her mother, Aleece Henriques, and other family members spent time in Brisbane as Lulu underwent the operations. Thanks to the partnership between Ronald McDonald House Charities and Big Cat Reef Cruises, the family including Lulu’s father, Carlos Henriques, and four siblings was given a Palm Cove retreat experience and took a day trip to explore Green Island on Friday. Lulu’s mother said the family time had been amazing after the difficulties of last year. She loves to be home, she’s been swimming this week and is having a ball, Mrs Henriques said. We spent most of last year in Brisbane spread out and split up, so it’s been a great week altogether. Just staying at the retreat’s been amazing in itself. Mr Henriques said: We had a hard time when the twins were born and to get away from it all is a big relief. Lulu’s doing really well now. She’s not there but she’s going great. Lulu’s older sister, eight-year-old Hazel, said she was glad to have the family back together again and that she was excited to finally see Green Island

10.01.2022 It's National Volunteer Week! Today, we are so proud to share the impact our volunteers across the entire region had in 2019 - they helped us care for a record-breaking number of seriously ill children and their families! Whether it was at our hospital-adjacent House, our in-hospital Family Room, as part of our Learning Program, at our Family Retreat in Palm Cove, through our Hospitality Cart in Mount Isa or at one of our community or corporate events, our vollies had our backs! Thank you for your continued passion and support - we are forever grateful! #NVW2020 #ChangingCommunitiesChangingLives
10.01.2022 #FeelGoodFriday The Read family recently returned home with beautiful baby Korah after spending 23 nights with us at our Townsville House. This is their story ... "We were told we had to deliver our baby in Townsville due to complications in the womb, we were brought up three weeks prior to our due date, in a stressful time it was amazing that we could stay at Ronald McDonald House until we delivered our baby. At first it was so overwhelming and the thought about being away from our pets, support, and home was scary, but the team at Ronald McDonald House were nothing short of comforting - the House is so welcoming, warm and safe. Being so close to the hospital, there was no stress about driving to appointments and once we had our baby it was easy to visit her while she was in NICU. The House has absolutely everything you need for your stay and now that we are home I often say to my husband how I miss the Ronald McDonald House, I miss everything about it. The feeling that so many other people are in the same situation as you makes you more comfortable and gives a sense that everything will be okay, that you're not the only one going through such a hard time. We can’t thank everyone involved with this Charity and what is has to offer - it’s amazing it’s there for anyone to use." #KeepingFamiliesClose

04.01.2022 Even though Lisa, from Cairns, is far from her other children this Mother’s Day, she’s able to keep close to twins Boyd and Tautu by staying at our Townsville Ronald McDonald House while Tautu gains his strength in the Neonatal Unit. The twins were born at just 30 weeks and Lisa has spent nearly 150 nights with us already. Brave brother Boyd has been well enough to stay with mum at our House for some time now, and we know it’s not much longer until Tautu is well enough for th...e whole family to travel home! Today, we’re wishing Lisa, and all the beautiful mums, mums-to-be, mums who have loved and lost and all the mum figures out there a wonderful Mother’s Day. #KeepingFamiliesClose : Townsville Bulletin
