23.01.2022 The Joys of Merchant Fees... (the hidden cost) Every on-line transaction attracts fees. Have a close look at your bank statement to see what you’re actually paying, or end up receiving, if you are sending donations and subscriptions, or asking for them. The normal rate is around .30c plus 2.9% per transaction, sometimes higher! Read the fine print of platform based donation and subscriber services.. some are taking 30% and more!!... FanFunded pays the merchant fees, in and out, so we've been able to negotiate a far lower rate based on the amount of transactions going through our platform. This consists of a Stripe micropayment fee (.5c +2.5% per transaction) and PayPal's mass payment fee per payment out (I've amortised this to .5c cost per transaction) and .5c per transaction to hopefully one day cover my costs. Thats it.. no supporter pays any fee on top of what they sign up for, and no FanFunded member pays for anything except these unavoidable merchant fees. All funds are distributed directly to each members PayPal account via ‘PayPal mass payment’, and they can transfer to their linked bank account for free from there. Fan Funded is an opportunity to change the way industries fund themselves, and in doing so, help a whole bunch of subsidiaries to prosper as well. There are no losers out of any effort to redistribute money from one pocket to another, especially when the load is being spread amongst thousands, even millions of people, and the less that gets ‘lost’ along the way in fees, the better! 15.01.2022 Can $2 a week actually make a difference?? Yep it sure can!! Simple maths. Personally, if you’re committing $2 a week to someone, it's not much of an impost at all. If you know you’re going to get at least that $2 a week back in value of some kind, it should be a no brainer to hook in and give someone you admire the support they need.... Say that person has 1,000 fans just like you, but only half of them sign up. They will still now have an income of $900 a week to plan/budget and create, knowing that what they’re aiming for has already been funded! How much better is this than what happens now? Artists have to pay for everything out of their own pocket, so everything is done on a shoe string budget. At the end of the day, they finally release their pride and joy, only to find that no-one really has to buy it to listen to it, so they don’t. Not only is there no return, it has actually cost the artist a whole lot of cash just to get to that point. Pretty demoralising for them, but you still love what they created, stream it every day, and wait eagerly for them to get back to writing more new stuff for you. The only way to make any cash is to play live, and hope that fans show up and pay for tickets. We can change that NOW! That money you invest? Its coming back to you, be it via signed copies of the new album, unique merchandise you can only get as a supporter, VIP tickets to shows, a private show for supporters only? You name it, it's totally up to the one you support to come up with the best way to say thanks, and ensure you want to keep investing in them! 15.01.2022 DONATIONS VS SUBSCRIPTIONS - Is one better than the other? Both have their place. Funnily enough, most artists don’t feel they’re worthy of payment, so will only ask for donations, as there is no longer term commitment from either side. But how many creatives do you know that are not striving to nurture and present their next masterpiece, their lifes work, their baby?? They’ll sell their soul to make it as good as can be, with no real plan to make a return, just hoping e...nough people like it that it gets played, and hopefully shared. THIS NEEDS TO CHANGE! Why do we now expect those we admire to somehow keep creating for us, their fans, with no investment from us except some positive comments on their socials, and maybe a streaming subscription they never see a cent of. For $2 a week through FanFunded, a fan can show that they believe in the artist, allow them to flourish, and not only feel good about what they’re doing, but know that they’re going to get that money back in one of many ways as well! No-one needs to buy a cd or digital copy of a song any more, but its still awesome to own something special from the artist, maybe a signed copy of a vinyl print, a limited edition T-shirt only available to supporters, a special VIP area at gigs.. Thats gotta make it worth investing up-front in someone's future, knowing that you’re playing a small but incredibly important part. Donating is fine, but you have to keep asking, and how many fans will donate every week, or more than once? Know someone that should be involved? Let em know we exist.
