25.01.2022 A BIG THANK YOU to all the families (and staff members - thank you lovely Louise!) who have donated baby/child items to our Roundabout Canberra Donation Tub. This tub is currently overflowing - a true sign of how generous and kind our community is . These much needed items will be heading to Roundabout Canberra's storage space this week, ready to be packed into orders for families experiencing financial hardship across Canberra. If you are keen to contribute here are the i...tems that are most needed this month: Nappy cream (unopened/unused) Wipes (unopened/unused) Nappies (Open packs are fine) Nipple Cream (unopened/unused) Baby Board Books Baby wash (unopened/unused) Bottle Teats (unopened/unused) Dummies (unopened/unused) Thanks again for supporting Roundabout Canberra !

25.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we read the delightful 'Owl Babies' by Martin Waddell. It tells the story of three baby owls who were worried when they couldn’t see/find their Mother. The playschoolers remembered and acted out the smallest baby owl’s (Bill) line I want my Mummy!!! to perfection. We find this is a comforting story to tell when children find separating from their parents at the start of our day hard. Just like the Mother Owl came back to her babies, we reinforce the message that "The Mums/Dads/Grandparents always come back at the end of our Playschool Day."

24.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we took a closer look at our faces by using hand held mirrors. The playschoolers used the mirrors to assist them to draw self portraits. They checked the colours and shapes of their facial features, as well as helping them to remember which features to include as they drew.

23.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} It was another super quick week, with just our Tuesday and Wednesday groups joining us. We explored RECTANGLES. We painted on rectangular foil strips. The playschoolers enjoyed painting on this new texture and listening to the crinkly sound the foil made as their paintbrushes moved across the foil. There were also a variety of rectangles on the collage table this week. As the playschoolers pasted the rectangles they discussed the different patterns and textures they selected.

23.01.2022 REMINDER~ Farrer Playschool's AGM will be held tomorrow night (Tuesday 25 Feb) at 7.00pm. We will be electing a new Committee for 2020 (Co-ordinator & Assistant Treasurer positions are still available), so come along if you are interested in a position or wish to find out a little more about how the Playschool operates. Hope to see you there!

20.01.2022 Playschool....is all over for 2019. Thank you to the sixty families who have been part of our space and community this year. Being just a staff of two, your assistance and support is integral to Farrer Playschool operating successfully and being a valuable experience for the children who attend. Thank you! For those Playschoolers who will soon become Preschoolers we will miss your children next year! Please make sure you wave us down when you spot us out and about - we love h...earing how our 'old' playschoolers are doing :) Special thanks to the Playschool parents who came in to help with our annual cleaning day last Thursday- Emma R, Jaimi, Alyce, Jacqui & Lili. You all worked so hard and as a result our Playschool room, furniture and resources are sparkling clean and ready for three groups to start next year! Thank you! Wishing all our families a Merry Christmas and a relaxing break.

19.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we explored a variety of Christmas decorations in the sensory tub, listened to a story we know well 'Wombat Stew' via headphones and read a new story for most Playschoolers, 'Handa's Surprise'.

19.01.2022 *REMINDER* TOMORROW (Monday 14 Oct) is our Enrolment Day for 2020 sessions. It is also our first day back for current playschoolers :). Many thanks to Ray White Queanbeyan | Jerrabomberra/Brad o'Mara/Caroline O'Mara for creating these very effective advertising signs for our Enrolment Day - we appreciate your support! Thank you!

19.01.2022 {Sharing for our Parent Community} I have heard AMAZING things about this Parenting Workshop.

19.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we used bean bags again to practise our balancing skills. We worked out that we have improved and are able to balance a bean bag on our heads for a much longer time than the last time we moved and balanced with bean bags.

19.01.2022 {A snapshot from our first three weeks at Playschool}

If you were unable to attend tonight or are a returning family and haven't popped into Playschool to hand in your enrolment documents w...e would love to see you tomorrow (we will be in the building from 8am-3pm) or at the latest by Wednesday 4 Dec. Just a reminder that Enrolment Fees (cash or via bank deposit) are due next WEDNESDAY to secure your child's position at Playschool. Many thanks to Louise for all her hard work throughout the evening as well as in lead up. Thanks also must go to our Committee Members- Alyce, Caroline & Ian for their support before and throughout tonight's presentation. 18.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we flipped the daily routine around; heading outside first (hello sunshine !) then indoors later in the day. We will continue with this routine for the remainder of the Term. Outdoors we challenged ourselves on a variety of climbing equipment - the rope ladder took perseverance and A LOT of upper body strength ! Indoors, we threaded with beads and pipecleaners, continued to work on our special Christmas Folders and read 'Monkey Puzzle' and 'Caps For Sale'.

17.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} We read the Australian classic ‘Wombat Stew. We really enjoyed singing along just like the DingoWombat Stew, Wombat Stew crunchy munchy for my lunchy! Wombat Stew. We also read the new book 'Koala's eat gum leaves.' ....or do they??? The new resource, Magna Tiles were introduced to the playschoolers this week. These construction tiles will remain out over the coming weeks. It is always wonderful to see the playschoolers skills boost and creativity shine while using these building magnets.

17.01.2022 {2020 ENROLMENT DAY UPDATE} THANK YOU to all the prospective parents who came along to our Enrolment morning today. We had a wonderful response! It was terrific to meet lots of new families who are interested in our service, as well as catching up with LOTS of returning families. Thank you must also go to our helpful Parent Committee who support the teachers in our annual enrolment day/process, and to all the past and present Farrer Playschool families who spread the word abo...ut Farrer Playschool and what we have to offer. Your support and referrals to your friends and colleagues is greatly appreciated! (YOU are our greatest advertising source!) If you know of anyone who wasn't able to make it to today, expression of interest forms can be found on our website (http://www.farrerplayschool.com.au/index.php/enrolments) and emailed to our Enrolments Officer, Caroline, at [email protected] If you completed an expression of interest form today, Caroline, will be in contact with you within the next 2-3 weeks.

16.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} We read ’The Rainbow Fish’ and made our very own colourful and shiny fishes on the craft tables, dug, scraped, collected, and dumped coloured sand using a variety of small construction vehicles and problem solved while working with numbers.

16.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} our mornings were ICY ! But aren't we lucky that the sun was out and worked hard to warm up our playground . This week we are reading 'Mouse Shapes' , a story about three clever mice who find a collection of shapes and decide to make pictures with them. The playschoolers created their own pictures from a large selection of shapes. Take a look at some of their creative pictures! We also used flowers as an invitation to draw, completed m...agnetic puzzles and mazes, made magnificent 'playdough gardens', told a story using our bodies ('The Crocodile Hunt' story which can be found here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOVbKONDJTg ) and read the rhyming book 'My Cat Likes to Boxes'. Happy holidays to all our Playschool families, and thank you for all your support and help in the Playschool room this Term. We look forward to seeing your children in 2 weeks :) .

14.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we explored STAR and CRESCENT shapes. We read ‘ Papa Please get the Moon for me’ by Eric Carle and ‘How to catch a star’ by Oliver Jeffers (to make this reading session a little different we turned the lights off and switched on a collection of star lights.) During these reading sessions we engaged in some great discussions about the different moon shapes and made some very observant connections ("Wait, wait! That moon is in the Very Hungry Caterpillar book!" said one playschooler - indeed the two books share the same author/illustrator.)

14.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} there were MANY ways that we explored the story of The Gingerbread Man- at the playdough table, playing with gingerbread scented cloud dough and using white paint to 'ice' our own gingerbread men. We also cooled down by playing with large blocks of ice in the sensory tub.

14.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} the playschoolers were very happy to be back! Our mornings were filled with excited chatter about our holiday adventures; with many camping, Floriade, and beach experiences to recount.

13.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} it's a short week, with just our Tuesday & Wednesday groups joining us. We began exploring TRIANGLE shapes this week . We made ice-cream cones, dot dot triangles, textured triangle collages and used triangles on the painting easel to inspire our paintings. We had so much fun reading a well-loved book with the playschoolers this week’Hairy Maclary from Donaldson’s Dairy.’ There were some playschoolers who proudly remembered ALL the dogs names and descriptions. Which Hairy Maclary dog is your favourite ? - Schnitzel Von Krumm with a very low tum, is mine .

13.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we had the loveliest start to Term 3! The playschoolers were happy to be back and bursting to share their holidays adventures during morning group time (we could have easily spent the day just chatting and catching up with everyone's news!) Later in the day we turned our attention to talking about and reading a book that most of the playschoolers know and love, 'We're going on a bear hunt' . With the sequence and pattern of the story being familiar to most, we were able to pay close attention to the pictures and share our discoveries with lots of talking! We debated whether the older female in the family was the Mum or the older sister and noticed that some of the pages were just black and white, while others were in colour.

12.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we printed using printing trays and paint rollers, used pipettes, made some very creative cupcakes on the playdough table, and read the follow up to 'The Very Cranky Bear'. This time the bear was very itchy!

12.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we participated in National Science Week. We added salt to watercolour paints, (observing the effect they had on our paintings), tested out which objects are magnetic and which ones are not, created leaf rubbings to see the veins, squirted vinegar over bicarb eggs (to reveal dinosaur toys inside), used the light table to view animal x-rays and read the non-fiction book 'So that's how the moon changes shape'. #scienceweek

09.01.2022 The new Farrer Nature Playspace opens this weekend (Sunday)! What an amazing outdoor play environment for the Farrer Community!

08.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} a VERY familiar story to most playschoolers filled our days, 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle.* A great deal of playschoolers were able to re-tell the story before we even began our shared big book experience. BUT...Why would we choose to a read a story that so many of our playschoolers already know?? When it comes to books, young children actually prefer familiar books to new texts. The repetition created through repeated readings allows... children to firmly encode information, concepts and vocabulary. This creates space for the child to focus on other elements of the story and the opportunity to further discuss the text and illustrations, making connections to their own lives or other books with similar themes. You can read more about the benefits of reading a book over and over (and over!) again to your child/ren here: https://www.readbrightly.com/why-reading-the-same-book-rep/ *As pure co-incidence, this week marks the 50th Anniversary of Eric Carle's beloved story (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYwE8qALm9M)

08.01.2022 {WELCOME to 2020 at Farrer Playschool} Today we welcomed our first Playschool group, the Monday Group to a new year at Farrer Playschool. It was wonderful to meet and spend time with each playschooler and their family member/s who joined them for today's shortened session. The Monday playschoolers enjoyed meeting Mr Bumble Bee (and were so confident when telling him their names!), playing at the train table, cooking in the home corner, painting, pasting on the collage table and much like every start to a new playschool year -the playdough table was the place to be! We look forward to meeting the Tuesday and Wednesday groups over the next two days!

08.01.2022 TEDDY BEAR WEEK! Our teddy bears joined us for a day at Playschool. They were a big part of our day, joining in with songs, stories and inside and outside play. The playschoolers were given a name tag for their special toys after telling Amber or Louise their teddy's name. Some of the popular names were 'Ted', 'Teddy' ' Big Ted', while there were some that were unique - like 'Sugar Pom Pom' ' Cheese & Biscuits', 'Wags', 'Funny Bunny' and 'Spike'.

06.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we took a closer look at our names, focusing on the first letter of our names. We discovered that for some of us we share the same initial letter with others ( B & M are the most popular beginning letters on Monday, E & H on Tuesday and the letters E & H on Wednesday!) We covered the lines of our initial letter with interesting collage materials like pasta, sequins, pipe cleaners. We also read a very clever counting book (sadly, now out of print :() 'Mr Brown's Magnificent Apple Tree'. This book encouraged us to count and REALLY got us thinking! In this story we, as the readers, knew something that the main character (Mr Brown) did not. We had to keep asking the question 'Is that really what happened?' everytime Mr Brown announced who he believed was taking his apples from the tree.

05.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} We moved, balanced and played games with bean bags, persevered while using scissors, used hand-eye co-ordination to tap golf tees into blocks of foam, turned boxes, bottle tops, straws and paper rolls into vehicles, buildings, robots, rockets and even pizza! We also painted in the sunshine (21 degrees today - Hooray for warm days ) and read a VERY well-known book.

04.01.2022 Some of our ex-playschoolers made their PLAYSCHOOL TV debut this week. A lovely group of playschoolers feature at 6.55, documenting a trip to Corrin Forrest last Winter. What a joy to watch! Just love that they captured the children's voices. Beautiful! https://iview.abc.net.au//pl/series/0/video/CH1712H041S00

04.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we celebrated SPRING (....although Tuesday's Winter-like weather made that a little challenging!) We made mini gardens with beautiful flowers from Louise's garden, created our own blossom trees and learnt a new song (with a surprising, and very loud ending!) 'I like the flowers'.

02.01.2022 {This week at Playschool} we are celebrating BOOK WEEK. We have been sharing two books which have been shortlisted for the Children's Book Council of Australia's Book of the Year: Early Childhood category to all Playschool groups. We are reading: Noni the Pony Rescues a Joey by Alison Lester (Alison Lester has two books shortlisted in this category just AMAZING!) and... Rainbow Bear by Stephen Michael King. It was hard to pick just two! Hopefully we can make our way through the entire list throughout the year. You can find out the Winners and Honours Books here: https://cbca.org.au/winners-2019 Happy Book Week and Happy reading everyone! See more

01.01.2022 THANK YOU to all the families who purchased Mango Trays during our recent end of year fundraiser. We sold 52 trays and raised close to $300! This money will go towards new resources for the Playschool Room. Many thanks to Mac, a P&C representative and ex-Playschool parent from Wanniassa Hills Primary School for enabling Farrer Playschool to participate, Louise for co-ordinating the orders and collecting the money and Katrina for transporting the trays from Wanniassa to Farrer. Your help was greatly appreciated! We hope you enjoy your mangoes !

01.01.2022 It's TEDDY BEAR WEEK at Playschool! Here are the Monday group's Teddy Bears. It was so much fun to spend the day with our special teddies. We are looking forward to meeting the Tuesday & Wednesday group's teddy bears this week.
