12.01.2022 FAST NT recognizes Reconciliation Day, please read a reflection of one of our Darwin based FAST trainers of our participation in our local schools Reconciliation assembly. Well done Marrara Christian School and to all the speakers. My name is Marilyn, my aboriginal heritage is through my Dad, a Gooreng Gooreng warrior. Today I attended a school assembly at NT Christian School to commemorate Sorry Day, and Reconciliation week. To witness this generation of students acknowle...dging the painful history for the Stolen Generations of Aboriginal people throughout Australia was heartwarming. A very stirring and provoking speech by an Aboriginal student, the daughter of well-known Darwin identity Charlie King, challenged the audience to voice our dislike whenever injustices are being verbalized against Aboriginal people and informed us of the ongoing disparity between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal. I’m taking some time to reflect the essence of reconciliation. Today as I contemplate Sorry Day and the Kevin Rudd apology of 2008 and ask myself the question, how does this history make me feel? I sat in the audience and slowly tears fall as I listen and I’m reminded of the numerous children forcibly removed from their Mothers, grandparents, brothers and sisters because of the colour of their skin, traumatically taken away displaced from their loved ones. I sat and listened to Charlie tell of his mother’s story, a Gurindji woman who was taken from her homelands to Kahlin Compound Darwin. I sat with my dearest friend Valerie, whose Gurindji family experienced the same fate. Today, her granddaughter participated as a student to share the why we have Sorry day. Oh how I needed to remember, I can’t go through life not acknowledging the suffering and horrific grief that past generations have endured. Telling this story needs to continue, mourning with those that mourn; grieving with those that grieve and now I choose to walk into the future in the spirit of reconciliation and not be silent.
