22.01.2022 This isn't our usual Faunaverse content but I (Jane) wanted to share this song I just wrote called: 'The Lizard Spotting Blues'. When you are married to a Herpetologist who is obsessed with lizards, it's a given that your life will involve an inordinate amount of time spent looking for said lizards. Whilst I'm mostly extremely happy to be out in the bush looking for lizards (and mammals birds and other reptiles)...sometimes I just want to go home. I hope you enjoy 'The Lizard Spotting Blues'.

22.01.2022 We're thinking of another book. What's your favourite Ausse Urban animal? What's your least favourite?

19.01.2022 Alex is featured in this week's ABC Offtrack podcast episode; He shares his "fieldwork fail" that occurred while researching Tasmanian Tree Frogs. This episode has a fantastic collection of "Fieldwork Fails". https://abclisten.page.link/XhvLGFq4ZmrJXErCA. Available now through the ABC listen App - http://bit.ly/ABCradioApp

08.01.2022 Jalbil, the Forest Dragon is normally hidden in the greens of the forest. But if you get too close, you are warned with a brightly-coloured flag.

03.01.2022 I (Alexander) had been working as a guide at Uluru for five months back in 1994 and the only time I had seen a Perentie it was frightened off by my tourists, so I hadn't managed any photographs. My job had come to an end and I was driving south along the Start Hwy near Coober Pedy, despondent that I had failed to photograph Australia's largest lizard when I came over the crest of a "hill" and there was this giant mother in the middle of the road. I had overtaken a roa...d train a few km back (no mean feat in my 1976 Corolla wagon) and my concern that this lizard was about to be turned into lizard linoleum was great. I pulled over, ran up to the lizard waving my arms (while it looked at me expressionlessly) and I could hear the road train approaching. Eventually, when the truck was only a couple of hundred metres away it decided to saunter off the road. Unfortunately, I hadn't completely closed my car door in the hurry and the draft from the truck slammed it open and filled my car with dust. I managed to retrieve my camera gear (an Olympus Om-2 with a 135mm F3.5 lens) and catch up with the lizard, who was making its way carefully through the low shrubs. It stopped and flopped down a bit when it saw me, and I lay down face-first to get this shot. There were no swivel-screens back then. I realised immediately that every species of burr appeared to be poking into my flesh. But I got the pic. Varanus giganteus. What a beast. See more
