18.01.2022 Tomorrows fire danger is VERY HIGH. Burning is prohibited tomorrow, including small fires after 1800hrs (6:00pm).

18.01.2022 Homemade pickle is one of the coolest kitchen hacks for using up those random leftover bits of veg you have in the fridge. You get a good couple of months out of it and it's such a delicious pickle that you can use with all sorts of dishes!

17.01.2022 As I am stepping down from being the President of the Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce I would like to reflect on the contribution myself and other core people hav...e made to improving the prospects for local businesses which has also improved life for the local community. Fifteen years ago, our family bought Fawkes House and established a now thriving and award- winning spa retreat. Wanting to get involved in the local community I joined the then Bickley Valley Tourism Association moving from, one year running the Harvest Festival in its infancy to Vice President and then President. From there I moved on to help with the then Kalamunda Tourism Association becoming vice and then President. A meeting with the then president of the Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce led, with the encouragement of the shire, into one body as our aims objectives and resources were being duplicated across the three very similar organisations. With no Visitor Centre for Kalamunda I started a stall at the Rotary Market once a month to promote tourism to locals and visitors. I then approached the then Shire of Kalamunda to use the room at the front of the library. It took considerable persuasive powers to persuade the shire to allow us to do this and we had to pack up Sunday afternoon store everything at the History Village and then cart it all back to the library room the following Saturday morning. I was actually mocked when I asked if we could have the room every day. I eventually achieved this and the visitor centre flourished run with 24 volunteers on free coffee and biscuits. The Shire began to see the value of tourism to the local economy and supported the KCC by providing the room at the library. Eventually the new visitor centre was built I was involved in all of the workshops and planning for the Zig Zag Cultural Centre as President of the KCC. As the work opportunities up north declined the state government has recently decided to invest heavily in expanding tourism opportunities seeing it as an economic driver into the future. Our previous Mayor John Giardina understood this and the KCC thanks him for the establishment of the grassroots working parties and the successful tourism strategy written by Francesca Flynn giving over 120 hours of unpaid voluntary work. The Kalamunda Tourism Strategy is unique in its development from tourism business input from within the city. Many businesses contributed and the KCC thank them. Once again thank you to John Giardina for his timely decision to pursue this and his commitment to see the tourism strategy through during his tenure as mayor of Kalamunda. This brought about the organisation we now have today the Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce. The journey has not been easy but a number of core identities, myself, Bob Melville, Jon Elbery, Jan Fletcher, Peter Stewart, Peter Withers and David Fowler have endured. Jan Fletcher left after more than 15 years voluntary service a few years ago. David Fowler has recently been back on board after a brief sojourn in Melbourne. These people were with me 8 years ago when I became President of the KCC. People who know me well understand that my contribution to the business community and thus the broader community is based on a deep belief of the importance of giving back to your community. The individuals I have mentioned who have worked tirelessly on your behalf have given countless voluntary hours, sweat and toil literally. Try helping at the night market each month for 10 hours when you are in your 70s. I would hereby like to acknowledge them all for their unique contributions to our Kalamunda City community. I think it is important to document the achievements of the KCC over the past 8 years while I have been President. I would like to recognise our core of steadfast committee members who have each given hours of their time. None of this would be possible without their support. With their support as president for 8 years I have Taken the KCC from a struggling organisation beset with internal and external issues to one that impacts successfully on the lives of both businesses and the greater community. Developed a memorandum of understanding and sponsorship agreement with the City of Kalamunda mutually beneficial to the city, the chamber and its members and the broader community. Rescued a failing Kalamunda Farmers Market 8 years ago to a vibrant busy place for both locals and visitors and dogs to mingle each and every Sunday morning; rain or shine. Delivered, with the support of the City of Kalamunda, a highly successful Bickley Harvest Festival for the past 8 years. Culminating last year in the busiest and the best. Established the Kalamunda Night Market four years ago. Now running from September through to May once a month with the addition of a Christmas in July market reinvigorating the centre of Kalamunda. This was seeded by monies from the Farmers Market. Along with Bob Melville, Peter Withers and Jon Elbery volunteered at the Kalamunda Night Markets helping to direct traffic, bump in stallholders, sort out any issues and help clear up. Delivered annually and attended approximately 20 Business Breakfast and Business Sundowners where all businesses within the city have made valuable networking connections. Overseen, run and attended the annual Business Excellence Awards for 8 years celebrating the best of business within the City of Kalamunda. Established the Young Entrepreneur Award where we have 3 to 4 young people who have received a quarterly award and then gone on to become finalist for the annual award. Established a new and exciting Women in Business Award with the KCC now about to launch a comprehensive programme aimed at women in business in collaboration with a major sponsor. All to be announced soon. Encouraged more businesses from all suburbs to understand the benefits of membership to KCC. It is amazing to see a networking event in action with contacts for business to business opportunities shared stories and local collaboration being achieved across all business sectors. Acted as vice chair on the Tourism Strategy for the City of Kalamunda contributing to its successful launch. Collaborated with the City of Kalamunda on the Spring Festival culminating this year with a highly successful pop up music venue on Haynes Street sponsored by and in conjunction with the City of Kalamunda. Initiated a relationship with the Esther Foundation when they relocated to Kalamunda. Over the past 2 years the KCC has awarded two Esther ladies Young Entrepreneur Awards Provided one to one mentoring and sponsored free access to our training courses for them. The City of Kalamunda community has come together for each Esther finalist over the past two years coming on board with offers of donations to ensure each girl has been able to attend the KCC Business Awards Night. These worthy Esther ladies have felt embraced and loved by our business community and the individuals helping out. Suggested the Fairy Doors idea to encourage parents to discover the exciting range of businesses on offer, so stunningly implemented by the ladies at Clip Joint working with the Influence and the City of Kalamunda. There are rumours of new fairies moving into the Bickley Valley. Supported and encouraged the Christmas Lights Competition also organised and run by the enthusiastic community spirited ladies of Clip Joint. Supported their application for funding from the City of Kalamunda. Advocated on behalf of local business at federal, state and local government level. Helped facilitate annually a series of workshops for all business within the City of Kalamunda from Business Station and the Small Business government body often free or involving a small affordable cost. Of course, all of this was achieved with the help and assistance of paid part time staff whose dedication and caring attitude to our community has seen them contribute many additional voluntary hours far in excess of what they are paid. I can assure you these people are not in it for the money but for the opportunity to help make Kalamunda a better place to live. Nicole Airey has lived and breathed both markets over the years culminating in the last night market in November where I understand the crowd was huge and the atmosphere was amazing. I congratulate her and thank her for all the additional hours she contributes to the huge task of creating a monthly event enjoyed by every age group both local and visitors. Andrea White in her calm quiet hardworking way has pulled the Kalamunda Farmers Market back from the brink ensuring local producers can sell direct to the public, an incubator opportunity for new businesses and a real social occasion each Sunday morning. Stephanie Lee our book keeper has always provided an excellent professional service and advice to the KCC working willingly above and beyond her paid remit. This year our accounts manager Lisa Beeby has worked hard on our membership database and our accounting procedures. Leaving to establish her own business once again we wish you well. Francesca Flynn has only been able to be with us briefly this year but has achieved much including redevelopment of our membership packs, sponsorships and work on our membership data base. We wish her further success with her own flourishing business. Just a few statistics in this social media age the Night Market advertised on Facebook from 27 November to December 2 had a reach of 49 k and the farmers market a reach of 28 K. The Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce its volunteers and dedicated staff are truly putting the City of Kalamunda on the map! When I spoke at the 2019 Business Excellence Awards Night those of you who attended will remember I talked about a line from a song which had come to mind. We are all in this together. Kalamunda Chamber of Commerce has survived grown and flourished because of its core volunteer committee who have given hours and hours of their time to its success. This coupled with dedicated caring part time staff wanting to go above and beyond what is required is what makes the KCC successful for business and the greater community. The synergy of these dedicated people working collaboratively in conjunction with the City of Kalamunda can only continue to improve all our lives within the City of Kalamunda. I am proud of these achievements and the opportunity to ensure succession and further progress with Jon Elbery our Treasurer taking the reins. I wish the KCC every success into the future working together as one remembering we are all in this together and together we can achieve great things. Caroline Babbage
