24.01.2022 The Future Foreign Correspondent book was published in February of this year, written by our very own Prof Saba Bebawi (Director) and Head of School of Communications Professor Mark Evans of UTS: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Based on experiences from our study tours over the years, this book provides valuable lessons learnt for future correspondents. 23.01.2022 The Foreign Correspondent Study Tour India reflection #2 Words by Dana Rutner The FCST in India was one of the most valuable experiences in my journalism degree and practice to date.... You are thrown into the deep end of what it is like to be a real foreign correspondent. You are faced with the challenges that are faced by journalists and you get to tackle them head on. India is a beautiful country with many facets to explore. Even in the two weeks we spent in Bangalore there were countless that we were inspired to write, but just didnt have the time. With every corner you took you were met with someone or something that could be a story. Every editorial meeting was met with a stream of ideas about potential stories and leads to follow. The skills that I learnt on the trip are truly priceless and skills that only come with practice and experience. The tour allowed me to adhere to strict deadlines, finesse my video skills, organise interviews with people despite language barriers and overall have faith in my abilities to be a journalist. The trip empowered me to continue to explore the world of journalist and also allowed me to realise the endless possibilities and power to make change that can occur through journalism. I found that it was not a chore to be writing the articles, but rather an obligation to society to tell these stories, to share the news and to display the truth. This is something that had always been taught and now I got to see it in practice. The India Study Tour allowed me to really explore the world of a foreign correspondent, and make countless memories, connections and friendships along the way. 19.01.2022 The Foreign Correspondent Study Tour Philippines reflection #2 Words by Jarin Hossain "The Foreign Correspondent Study Tour was hands down the best experience Ive had in my three years at university. I came in extremely anxious about my skills and my ability to adapt to the vastly different journalistic environment of the Philippines but I can truly say that I came out more confident than ever. This tour allowed us to step outside the classroom and work in the field as real ...journalists. Being able to just write story after story and filing them with strict time constraints gave us a real look at how it works in the industry and further instilled in me that this is something I truly want to pursue as a career. The trip also allowed us to work with local students at the University of Santo-Tomas and it was fascinating learning about how journalism is taught there and the general media landscape of the Philippines. Being able to interview locals and experts in both Manila and Palawan has taught me how to overcome cultural and language barriers and has significantly improved my video production skills in just a couple of weeks. Meeting indigenous Cuyonon leaders in Palawan was a highlight for me as I was able to learn a lot about the history and nuances of one of the many cultures that exist within the Philippines. The FCST has undeniably been a once in a lifetime experience that I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to participate in and I hope to use all these valuable skills I have learnt throughout my career." 12.01.2022 Tunisia Foreign Correspondent Study Tour reflection #3 Nick Ritchie writes: The FCST, as organized through UTS in conjunction with the CAAR and... DFAT was an invaluable way to end the first year of my Masters of Advanced Journalism degree for numerous reasons. Tunisia is a beautiful country rich with heritage and a culturally eclectic population. Despite only spending ~10 days on the ground, we as a group were fortunate to explore the diverse countryside and experience various nuances of North African and Arabic culture few other students may ever be exposed to. Interacting with locals, guides and various other foreign nationals involved in humanitarian programs bared our academic and personal psyches to mindsets and perspectives of the world that will forever stick with us all as individuals. Additionally, of the work that was produced by students, many came away with a deeper understanding of their chosen topics as well as producing well-polished pieces of journalism that will in some cases inevitably find homes on the publication pages of content outlets in the near future. Aside from the opportunity to travel and see a part of the world we had little prior experience with, the FCST provided priceless experience working within tight publishing time frames in a foreign country in reasonably informal environments (hotel bedrooms, floors of other bed rooms etc.); environments that quite possibly would mirror those that journalists and foreign correspondents would be subject too each and every day while working abroad. Apart from the academic and vocational related skills that I gained and nurtured while away, the trip provided a great experience to make international connections with likeminded professionals in fields that will be of interest to me when deciding upon my future direction. Alongside this, relationships with fellow students and professors were both strengthened and tested and Im happy to have galvanized friendships that Im sure will last well into my professional years. 11.01.2022 The Foreign Correspondent Study Tour to Philippines was a huge success, read below our first reflection! Words by Jacinta Neal The Foreign Correspondent Study trip to Philippines was the best thing I have done in my journalism degree so far! Not only did it push me outside of comfort zone but also helped me to hone in on my journalism skills.... Learning about the Philippines rich history and the ways the country has evolved was incredible to learn about. A personal highlight for me was working with the University of Tomas students in Manila, which was an interesting way to learn about the Philippines culture and way of life. It was awesome to visit places in Manila and Palawan where tourists dont normally venture as it allowed for a real snapshot into peoples everyday lives. This experience has not only enriched my study life but also my personal one as I have learnt a lot about myself and what I can be capable of if I push myself. I feel so grateful to have been given the opportunity to attend the study tour and would encourage everyone to apply. New Colombo Plan

10.01.2022 The Foreign Correspondent Study Tour India reflection #1 Words by Adelaide Miller After spending two weeks in India I can confidently say I have grown as a journalist and as a person. Working in such a fast-paced environment where you constantly had to be versatile forced me outside my comfort zone and mirrored the real working world of a foreign correspondent. While tough and exhausting at times, this study tour has confirmed that this is a career path I am interested in... pursuing. The lectures at the start of the first week gave some insight into the current state of India and Bangalore and where the country is looking to be in the next ten years. These lectures were great for story ideas and also contacts for sources. I enjoyed working with students from the Indian Institute of Journalism and New Media and comparing how our Journalism course at UTS differs from theirs. Our study environment at The Park hotel was extremely comfortable, especially with the late nights and internet consumption. The group of students all had similar goals and aspirations which helped motivate and support one another when trying to meet deadlines and develop skills in post-production. Our faculty from both Sydney and Bangalore were full of knowledge and were amazing help in all areas of creating our stories I am very grateful for their time and efforts with us. Out of the four multimedia packages created the one that stood out the most to me was breaking news day, not just because of the story but the entire process. I loved the adrenaline, fast-paced environment and pressure to complete our stories by midnight - and when we finally submitted, it was an incredible, satisfying feeling. Photo credit: Denby Weller

09.01.2022 The Foreign Correspondent Study Tour Tunisia reflection #3 Tahlia Kraefft writes: The Foreign Correspondent Study Trip to Tunisia, gave me the incredible opportunity to report on and learn about issues affecting local Tunisian people. ... Tunisias rich political history and the peoples Arab Spring revolution that cemented the countrys fate as the sole democracy in North Africa were fascinating to learn about. Visits to the Manouba University in Tunis, where we spoke with professors and students in the Masters Department of Journalism, were particularly memorable. We heard about their hopes for the future of press freedom and democracy in Tunisia. We met investigative journalists from the Sydnicat National des Journalistes Tunisiens and discussed the risks journalists take to report on injustices. A visit to the desert clifftop village of Takrouna was a special encounter. We conversed with Berber villagers about their traditions, that have been held for generations and were lucky enough to try their renowned skillet flatbread cooked over the fire and dipped in a mix of olive oil and honey. The food was an experience in itself with a mix of Arabic and Mediterranean influences,it was flavorsome and pungent including the harissa and olive hors doeuvres. It was exciting to be in a place where we as tourists were a rarity, as we we were the only people exploring the ancient ruins of Carthage and had the blissful Mediterranean at Sidi Bou Said to ourselves. The French and Arabic language barrier was a challenge. Despite this, many locals were accommodating, cheeky and friendly. 08.01.2022 Tunisia Foreign Correspondent Study Tour reflection #2 Romy Gilbert writes: Visiting Tunisia as a journalism student was an experience I will never forget. Not only is Tunisia a country rich with varying cultures and identities, but it is a country that continues to celebrate its most recent revolution. During our time in Tunisia, we met with certain groups of people who have had a significant effect on how I view the world and more specifically, the global media and journal...ism industry. From Investigative Journalists in the Arab world who are at the forefront of change, humanitarians from the International Committee of the Red Cross, right down to the locals and traditional people of the land. Every conversation and interaction that took place on the tour was invaluable to me and my personal growth and understanding of the world. The group had a strange dynamic that was challenging at the best of times; however, I believe it is living and working in these conditions which is most beneficial to ones growth. Patience, understanding and kindness will always be, I believe, three important aspects of a happy life and indeed were important to remember and remind ourselves during our trip! So proud and grateful to be given the opportunity by Saba, UTS, DFAT and co to experience something like this. A journey I will hold close to my heart always. 02.01.2022 The #Tunisia Foreign Correspondent Study Tour team reflect on their experiences Toni Ambrogetti writes: The 2019 FCST to Tunisia was an incredible learning opportunity. The challenges I faced during the trip taught me valuable lessons that will help me to improve my journalism practice throughout my career. For example Tunisias official languages include Arabic and French. For the first 5 days I struggled to communicate in broken English and a basic understanding of Fre...nch. During one interview at the artisan market I was not getting anywhere when someone offered Italian as an alternative language. Whilst I am fluent in Italian I naively hadnt thought to suggest that language. I then proceeded to get two fantastic interviews by speaking in Italian and getting responses in their native language. From that moment on I learnt not to assume anything and try everything to get the story. In the lead up to our trip I had contacted many people via email and social media. Unfortunately I had not received many responses. Once I was in Tunisia the most successful interviews and research I did was by going out and talking to people face to face. On the first day we walked into a press conference, and on the second last day I met an artist on the top of a mountain who set up two other interviews for me. Talking face to face was the best way to gather information. Finally I learnt that you dont get second chances, so ask every question, shoot every photo and video and dont hesitate to do a second take. I am very grateful to our director Saba Bebawi for setting up this opportunity and support that went above and beyond, to Michaela for her support throughout the trip and Premier pro tips, to the funding bodies for supporting this project and my colleagues for providing a memorable trip.
