24.01.2022 The long-term impacts of unresolved trauma have become better understood since the publication of the (ACE) Adverse Childhood Events study. Sadly though not surprisingly, early trauma has been linked to a whole range of chronic health conditions such as fibromyalgia, digestive issues, autoimmune conditions, chronic pain, adrenal depletion syndrome, skin conditions & more. In my experience of working with trauma through the body, there are complex layers to the ways in which ...a person responds to trauma, even on a purely physical level. There is the initial pattern of bracing against the perceived threat or danger in a protective survival response - Fight, Flight, Freeze or Appease. Over time, the person usually develops a second layer or ways of 'holding it all together' by tightening or shutting down to contain the overwhelming feelings and sensations. This may include their avoidance behaviours, their addictions (including to exercise, busyness or over-engaging with their thinking brain), and also tension, pain and numbness patterns as parts of their body clamp down to contain everything. These body parts can include the skin, fascia, fluids such as lymph or blood, endocrine system, joints, bones, diaphragms, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and specific organs. The coherence or integrated working of these parts can also be affected. And a third layer is the chronic states where health issues begin to appear in response to trauma. Somatic Practice (the work of Kathy Kain) is a touch approach to trauma. It's something I use with clients to specifically build the stability and capacity of their nervous system, restore coherence within the body and begin to reverse the symptoms of trauma. It is a gentle, non-invasive approach to trauma work and can help access early trauma for which there are no words or conscious memories. Touch and the attuned presence of a bodywork practitioner alone can support the release of patterns of bracing and holding everything together in the body. This is often mistaken for "trauma release" particularly if accompanied by emotional catharsis. However, it is not necessarily an integrated bodymind approach to trauma with lasting results. The impact is often temporary as I find with trauma clients who have an ongoing need to visit other body-centred practitioners such as myotherapists or chiropractors. The good news is that somatic approaches to trauma which integrate both body & mind are gaining momentum around the world. 24.01.2022 What is your default protective survival style? In which state do you spend the majority of your waking and sleep time? Most of us have default patterns which are also context-driven. These states are not all-or-none but fluid and ever-changing.... In somatic approaches to trauma, we learn to track our nervous system states through the feelings and sensations in our bodies, our behaviours and our ability to function in the contexts of our lives. The charge within any given state can be reduced as we expand our nervous system capacity to be with uncomfortable feelings and sensations without tipping out of our coping bandwidth. And over time, the symptoms of trauma lessen and we begin to spend more time in states of regulation where we feel safe, are available for connection, and all of our body systems function optimally. 21.01.2022 #nurtureme I happen to be a kinesthet-visual through and through. Textures, colours and interesting visuals light me up and calm my nervous system far more than they do the average person, according to one of those psychological tests I took many years ago. I often share that staying in a holiday house with only neutral colours and slick textures drains the life out of me. I would much rather stay home! If there is a choice, I will contact the owners ahead of time and req...uest the room with purple throw, pink cushions or uplifting art on the walls. Thing is, our external environment has a huge impact on each of us as a human mammal. We need to be able to scan for cues of safety so that we remain in our zone of presence and resilience. Our senses are key in this process. They are also prime access points for our internal somatic landscapes and present-moment awareness. Olfaction or sense of smell is also powerful for me. Are you aware of YOUR dominant sense(s)? Or how you can harness their power to bring a greater sense of relaxed aliveness to your nervous system? And consciously add them to your toolkit for self-nurturing and quality of life? It’s a topic that I always cover when working with both trauma and perinatal clients. In May this year I had planned to return to the US for the first time in decades to complete some training with Ariel Giaretto and Margaret Rosenau, a couple of sought-after teachers in the somatic trauma world, but COVID-19 had other plans for me. Right now, I am permitted to travel up to just five kilometres from my home.... 16.01.2022 #bodymindwisdom #somaticexperiencing #thebodykeepsthescore #traumatherapymelbourne Somatic approaches to trauma focus on increasing a person's nervous system capacity or ability to be with uncomfortable feelings and sensations without tipping out of their "coping bandwidth." This range is not static and is often referred to as the Window of Tolerance & by other terms. The more unresolved stress and trauma we hold, the narrower our WoT. Those with early or complex trauma te...nd to have narrow WoTs and may continuously operate outside this in what's is known as the Faux WoT (K Kain & S Terrell, 2018). The art and science of these approaches is to be able to hold a safe container where a person can stretch towards their edges without tipping out of their WoT and into protective survival responses of Fight, Flight, Freeze or Appease. The latter situation is known as re-traumatization and reinforces the neural response patterns which need to shift in order to reverse the symptoms of trauma. It is a reason why it may be re-traumatizing for some to simply recall a challenging experience and talk or journal about it without first building nervous system capacity through connection with someone who can hold a safe therapeutic container and support the recalibration of their nervous system. Fight, Flight, Freeze & Appease are not states to be avoided as they have a clear protective function. However, they are designed to be time-limited so that our stress physiology is not constantly running the show, depleting our energy reserves and creating chronic patterns of bracing, shutdown and dis-ease. The more time we can remain within our true Window of Tolerance, the more resilient we are on a fundamental level, and the greater our levels of health and wellbeing.



14.01.2022 #birthtraumaawarenessweek The 1 in 3 statistic for birth trauma in Australia is sadly just the tip of the iceberg, in my opinion. My work at the intersection of trauma and birth allows me a perspective on both reducing the symptoms of trauma as well as preventing them in the first place. I know where I prefer to focus my intentions and efforts.... I offer education and support to families as well as perinatal professionals on the topic of birth trauma and ways of optimizing the blueprint of safety and connection for the new babies that are birthed into our world. As always, there is no simple or foolproof formula but some overarching principles apply to reducing the potential for birth trauma to be experienced by a birthing person, baby, and indeed their whole family. 02.01.2022 Co-regulation is a two-way street. As human mammals we all influence the state of one another's nervous systems simply by being in the same space with others as they read our subtle and primal body signals to inform them whether or not the world is safe. This is a biological imperative. Babies influence parents and parents influence babies by the quality of their presence and whether they are feeling settled or unsettled. ... When we apply this to birth trauma, it is inevitable that when one parent is impacted, the entire family is affected. I know inherently that when I support a parent to reverse the symptoms of trauma, the effect ripples right through their home. Any worthiness issues a parent may have around seeking timely therapy for themselves can therefore be safely debunked in my opinion. Breaking the trauma loop through bodymind approaches is always for the benefit of their entire tribe. Do you agree? I'm curious to hear your opinion or experience if you care to share.
