24.01.2022 Yesterday I had a really fantastic conversation with someone over the phone. We identified a lot of the issues he's been experiencing - chronic insomnia, gut issues, weight issues and a permanently foggy head - as being symptoms, and not just "old age"; as being soluble instead of permanent; as being optional instead of mandatory. During the conversation, he told me that everytime he's seeked help in the past, it's been when shit has hit the fan and he's been in deep burnout,... but admittedly he's only ever done enough to allow himself to keep going. Whilst that might sound shocking, it's literally the story of every high achieving, kick-ass business owner I've ever worked with, and I understand the deep struggle between the unrelenting ambition and standards these guys hold for themselves, and the fiercely uncomfortable need to start taking care of themselves so they can keep growing, and moving towards their goal, instead of crashing and burning in burnout land. Ultimately, it's so easy to retreat back to what's comfortable, and stick to what we've always done. But it takes courage to see beyond that, and realise that what we've always done hasn't yielded the results we've been wanting, and sometimes, it requires us to take a leap of faith into the unknown, and trust that we desperately need to do something different to get a different outcome. I was so proud of this guy when he was able to feel the fear of the unknown but push through it anyway to commit himself to change. He was willing to sacrifice the comfort of what he was "used to" to step into a scary realm of discomfort, entrusting me to help him get to the root of his burnout, and show him how he, too, can kick ass in business without killing himself in the process. So, for you guys out there who are sitting on the precipice of change - I encourage you to take that leap of faith and recognise that you, too can do it. It's not about having no fear - but about recognising that your brain will equally interpret that fear as excitement, and allowing yourself to get excited by the idea of what this change will do for you. #respect #courageovercomfort #steppingup #steppingintotheunknown #change #fearisjusttheothersideofexcitement
22.01.2022 INTEGRITY IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH AND REPORTING IS SO IMPORTANT TO ME. Diabetes is one of the leading global epidemics in Australia and around the world, and getting to the bottom of diabetes is a matter close to many peoples hearts, including mine. As a dietitian, Ive worked extensively in the area of diabetes management over my 10 yrs of practice so far. Now, we work on identifying insulin resistance before it gets to the stage of T2 diabetes, in the hopes of catching it e...arly, changing habits and preventing the devastating long term ramifications of poorly controlled blood glucose levels. Its actually a bit scary how many clients we see have perfectly normal fasting glucose and HbA1c levels but are still insulin resistant and en route to diabetes. For what seems like too long now, the world of nutrition science have been in two minds about the best approach to glycemic control high GI vs low GI, high carb vs low carb. It doesnt help that some basic definitions like what is considered low carb is even inconsistent. But hey, thats a story for another day. Up until now, for better or for worse, weve still used existing evidence both scientific and anecdotal. But this segment of the ABC Science Catalyst program had me raising my eyebrows. 21.01.2022 WHAT DOES HAVING INTEGRITY LOOK LIKE TO YOU? In business (especially when dealing with people's health) integrity is super important. For us, it's about not taking on clients that we can't help. ... * if we can't put our hands over our hearts and say we can help you * if you're a pain in the ass and won't submit to our process * if you think you already know it all and won't actually listen to what we say * if you're choosing to stay broken We can't help you, and it won't matter how much you're willing to throw money at us, we won't take it. On the flip side, we won't allow you to give us bullshit excuses for not getting help when you and us know full well how much you need it. We will hold you to higher standards than you or anyone you know has ever held you, and you can either rise to the occasion or stay stuck, but we will fight for you. To us, that's integrity. That's what we do and we will not show up any less than 110% for all our clients and people who need our help. So, what does integrity look like to you?
16.01.2022 THIS is literally what's wrong with the entrepreneur’s mindset, and why so many business owners and entrepreneurs are burnt out. For business owners and entrepreneurs, there’s this constant need to out work or out hustle everyone else. People do all sorts of things to squeeze more hours out of their day, not realising that this is the very reason most business owners are completely fucked for it.... Peak performance isn’t a race to see who works the longest hours, but it’s about being the most productive in the hours worked. On the contrary to taking us away and out of our flow, we need to see eating correctly as part of our workday flow. It’s a chance to give the brain a rest, and a time to put together something that’s going to keep our body going, in a peak performance state. Uber eats is convenient, yes, but is it really worth it in the long run? For all the weeks / months / years of not eating right, not prioritising self care how many hundreds of thousands of dollars lost is that? If you value your time and the activities you do at $1000/hr, and you’re unable to function because your brain is foggy from eating takeaway food, and you’re only functioning at a max 80% capacity for the 8 hours you work a day, that’s 1.6 hours lost each day. If you work only 5 days a week, that’s 8 hours a week you lose. At $1000/hr, that’s $8000/week, or $416,000 a year of opportunity cost lost to functioning less than optimally from eating less than optimally. The reality is, most business owners I speak to function at a lot less than just 80% capacity most are sitting at around 40-50% if they’re absolutely honest with themselves. So, next time you feel drawn to the idea of hustling and grinding and the need to squeeze every conceivable hour out of your day just to work, think again. And remember productivity does NOT, and should NEVER equal giving up self care. For a business owner or entrepreneur, that’s literally self sabotage of the highest degree.

04.01.2022 This is really close to my heart. I was diagnosed with endometriosis in my late teens and have had numerous laparoscopic procedures to remove patches of endo and deal with adhesions. I suffered with extreme pain on almost a daily basis and periods each month was a thing I dreaded. ...Continue reading
02.01.2022 This Thursday I have the privilege of presenting alongside a doctor and colleague I have much respect for. Tom has worked hard to become a medical doctor. He now works with other medical doctors to help them build a life they entered medicine for. However, through conversation we've discovered that many doctors, in their pursuit of a medical career has thoroughly burnt themselves out. Then, when you add to this the stresses of a medical doctor who is starting their own busi...ness as well..... it can feel utterly overwhelming. For lots of doctors they've dedicated their lives to helping others. However in the process have forgotten about themselves. In part this is because they have put theor patients and their work ahead of themselves. In part it's because they've not been able to draw the links between how they eat /drink and the effects this has on their hormones and physiology. This Thursday, Tom from The Drs Collective is running a webinar on this very topic and I'll be joining him to chat about the physiological side of burnout and how nutrition can make all the difference. If you're a doctor, make sure you register to join!
02.01.2022 SPENDING MONEY ON OURSELVES IS EASY. INVESTING IN OURSELVES IS HARD. When we buy a pair of shoes or a new car, the hardest thing is swiping the credit card, or signing on the dotted lines. When we invest in our own health, and our growth, swiping the credit card or signing on the dotted lines becomes the easy part.... The hard part is what comes next. The hard part is putting in the work it takes to get the outcomes we want to get. Its why so many people freak out when it comes to investing in themselves. Not because they cant afford it but because they dont know if they are dedicated enough, or is willing enough to put in the hard work and do what it takes. What you dont know yet, is that there is something harder than hard. And thats going backwards. Thats having your health further deteriorate, letting your energy levels hit rock bottom, having your mood constantly sit someplace dark, and sleepwhat sleep?! Thats struggling to get through the work day, drinking a tonne of coffee just to focus on the tasks at hand. Thats producing less than satisfactory work. Thats literally watching yourself burn your own business to the ground. I know change is hard, and change is scary. I was there only 18 months ago, when I had to make a choice of being stuck where I was comfortable and small or stepping into the scary unknown that can take me to someplace big and wonderful. I chose to step. Im not telling you that investing in yourself isnt hard, because it is. But whats harder is not investing in yourself when you need it. So which hard do you choose? #ChooseYourHard #LeapOfFaith #SteppingUp #InvestInHealth
