25.01.2022 A lockdown project... we are collating information about the incidental glass art in Drysdale and surrounds that we can add to our Glass Trail around the town. If you know of any please let us know - such as mosaic letterboxes, house numbers, wall art, etc. Here's Glenda's latest lockdown project - A street library with mosaics and lampwork library bugs. We (the Festival of Glass - Drysdale) would love to know about it and have a photo of it on our website. We hope to encour...age more people in our neighbourhood to add glass art to their street views as part of our on-going mission to make our region a recognised centre for Glass Art. We just need to know where the art is, have a photo of it and if there is a story behind it we’d love to share that too. Our email is: [email protected] or message us on Facebook (FestivalofGlass).

24.01.2022 I'll add our street library to the Glassy Neighbourhood list, as I have finally finished the mosaic side for it. Now I have cleared some space in the garage for more projects.

23.01.2022 The 2020 Glass Art Sculptural Award winners are Lucy Cleary and Daniella Acciarito. Lucy Cleary won the $500 prize sponsored by Stockdale and Leggo for her piece "What comes next? If we are not too late". Lucy describes her inspiration for her piece as: "This piece explores the effects of climate change. The first piece shows the bright colours and life we now know, as they slowly fade away. The second piece is more hopeful, 'If we are not too late'. Colour and life are start...ing to return. The emphasis is on 'If'. Only if we act now will it be not too late." Daniella Acciarito won the $125 Highly Commended prize sponsored by The Rotary Club of Drysdale with her piece "Pearl". Daniella describes her inspiration for her piece as: "I have loved Janis Joplin my whole life; her songs, her voice, her spirit has always resonated deep in my soul. I used a United colour palette as l want the eye to focus on her features and her extraordinary smile. ‘Pearl’ was the name of her final album release posthumously in 1971.

11.01.2022 These beautiful leaves have a Asian aesthetic. The overlapping arrangement provides a layered and textured component to our forest of glass.

11.01.2022 The winners in the 2020 Glass Art Functional Awards are Diane Schofield and Fiona Horne. Diane won the $500 prize sponsored by Glassfusing for her piece "Bird song in the garden". She describes her inspiration for the piece as: "The morning greetings and chatter from our visiting lorikeets, and the local birds around the garden, wake me in the morning. My garden is where I re-charge the batteries and practice mind-fullness. This mosaic birdhouse will add extra fun and cheerf...ulness to any garden." Fiona won the $125 Highly Commended prize sponsored by The Rotary Club of Drysdale with her piece "Three Bottles". Fiona describes her inspiration for the piece: "My mother was a potter and when I was a child, I loved the earthy plates, bowls and cups she made that we used every day. These glass pots take me back to that time and are in a way a tribute to the influence she has had on my art."

10.01.2022 The winners for the 2020 Glass Art Wearable Award are Glenda MacNaughton and Fiona Horne. Glenda MacNaughton won the $500 prize sponsored by the Beaders Guild Geelong and the Festival of Glass with her piece "Sapphire worlds". Glenda describes her inspiration for the pieces as: "Inspired by recently discovered giant planets called super-Earths whose composition is rich in the chemical building blocks for sapphires. Astronomers believe their rocky surfaces are littered with sh...immering sapphires. My hand-blown glass spheres are used to evoke these far away shimmering sapphire worlds and they are framed by geometric bead-woven components to represent their chemical building blocks." Fiona Horne won the $125 Highly Commended prize sponsored by The Rotary Club of Drysdale with her piece "The Possessive Dragon". Fiona describes the inspiration for the pieces as: "I like to imagine a world without humans making a mess of things, and in which dragons, rule and keep everything in balance. As we all know, dragons love their treasure and when I was making implosion reef pendants the other day, one flew into my studio and took possession of one of the more brightly coloured ones. He refused to give it back and so has been allowed to stay."

08.01.2022 And now for the prizes awarded in the 2020 Glass Art Awards Category "Bellawein". Marina Villani won the $700 Bellawein Award sponsored by the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads Lions Club with her piece "The Fishing Lesson". Marina describes her inspiration for her piece "For many the Bellawein region is more than seascapes. It is the place of pilgrimage where the family as a unit creates the memories of belonging. "The Fishing Lesson" is just such a memory in the making. Father and ...son bonding; sharing time, passing on knowledge." Diane Schofield won the $125 Highly Commended Bellawein Award sponsored by The Rotary Club of Drysdale with her piece" The future look of the Bellarine". Diane describes her inspiration for her piece as "Inspired by the over-development of towns around the Bellarine Peninsula. From a pleasant, semi-rural area, our beautiful Bellarine has become a focus for developers who are creating areas of "Little boxes ... that all look the same". Have we learnt nothing from Pete Seeger? Over-Development is forcing changes on the unique Bellarine identity, with little future value. These new areas of 'little boxes', with their roofs almost touching, often poorly made, hence little chance of longevity. This is why my mosaic ‘town' is roughly built and jammed together, with little appeal, while set in pleasant surroundings."

03.01.2022 We hope that everyone out there is safe and well in these challenging times. Since the Covid-19 crisis hit we've been very busy exploring options for responsibly running a Festival of Glass in 2021 that responds to the uncertainties and restrictions of changing Covid-19 contexts. Needless to say we are all much more 'Zoom' aware and thankful for it but missing the biscuit treats that generally went with our face-to-face meetings. Amongst this, many of our local sponsors hav...e been hit hard by the crisis and major sponsors are reviewing their grant programmes. So, we are proactively exploring additional fundraising options. We should have some news soon - you'll notice a 'Sign up' button at the top right of the page if you'd like to subscribe to our Festival newsletter. Here's some reminders of how things used to be and why we are working hard to ensure a Festival presence in 2020. We'll be sharing more in the coming weeks but we'd also love to share any photos you have of 2020 Festival events....

01.01.2022 The 2020 Silvan Novice Award winner is Roxy Van Bereven. Roxy won the $200 prize sponsored by the Silvan Family with her piece "Deep Sea". Roxy describes her inspiration for her piece as: "Based on a necklace I saw at the Festival I created my own interpretation. During the 4-day Glass Jewellery Lab Programme with Davide Penso we were challenged to design and create a jewellery piece. The piece I created challenged my knowledge gained from the Geelong Beaders Guild, and incorporated new skills learnt from Davide. The necklace is a deep-sea type, representing the complexity and mystery of the deep."
