24.01.2022 Early morning meeting to help improve doctors’ education to support survivors of female genital mutilation. This was a few years ago now and still a lot of work to do. But at least now Clitoral restoration surgery is an option for women who want it.

24.01.2022 There is no choice in Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). As the term implies FGM is sexual abuse just as rape is . How do you CONSENT to removing an entire heal...thy sexual organ on the basis of traditional or culture. To know what FGM it is best we start with knowing the types of FGM. There are 4 main types of FGM: type 1 (clitoridectomy) removing part or all of the clitoris type 2 (excision) removing part or all of the clitoris and the inner labia (the lips that surround the vagina), with or without removal of the labia majora (the larger outer lips) type 3 (infibulation) narrowing the vaginal opening by creating a seal, formed by cutting and repositioning the labia type 4 - other harmful procedures to the female genitals, including pricking, piercing, cutting, scraping or burning the area. FGM often performed by traditional circumcisers or cutters who sadly don’t have a open dialogue with their intended patients is victim. Though in some countries it may be done by a medical professional. However women and girls still remained with scars and complications. How do you arrived at CHOICE where DO NO HARM exists? In many communities across the world FGM happens to women, girls in their childhood and/or as young as babies. Many reasons why this pervasive cruel practice exists is based on many reasons from pressures on families and communities to ensure daughters have FGM. In many cases on the basis of morphed belief systems, ancient traditions, faith and sexuality. And in almost all it’s setting - often women and girls have NO CHOICE. That decision is taken away because the practice itself is hidden and done in secret. Sadly many women and girls coerced to believe or see their bodies as commodities of their communities. Cannot say NO Despite families knowing that their daughters are scarred for life because of FGM in communities where nearly all women have FGM and all girls are expected to have it, FGM can seen as NORMAL. Nothing normal in cutting a vital health organ off a adolescent girl or a young woman. In some cases on babies every part of organ is removed completely. There is no other choice and it is very difficult for girls to challenge these traditions. Because when you do you are ostracised or even killed. So I ask - How does one consent to rape or the removal of a sexual organ of which FGM is. In my birth country of Sierra Leone I often see many women speak of CHOICE ...sadly choice in this context is an oxymoron. Furthermore failing to see that choice used as a loaded concept which has for decades constructed through a patriarchal and misogynised lens. Most definitely an oxymoron. Simply lost in translation. Furthermore, 40.2% of women who were cut/FGM were initiated in the #secretsociety between ages of 10 and 14 years old. Now I ask the question How could choice have been given where no informed decision exists. In 2020 women should not see their bodies as diseased or faulty but beautiful and whole in all its depth. 24.01.2022 "Kids are stuck at home with parents and can't actually reach for help. The problem is that we won't actually see the damage until this is all over, and then we're going to have a whole range of children who have been cut or mutilated. "The restrictions in place have created a breeding ground for this to take place."

14.01.2022 Paula Ferrari will join Social JustUs on Sunday night 23rd August 7:30pm AEST to follow up the recent podcast with Hibo Wardare.

08.01.2022 Join us on Sunday 23rd August 7:30pm AEST to discuss all things clitoris.

05.01.2022 As a registered charity FGM Restoration Australia are accountable to the Australian Charities and Not-for-profit Commission, the ACNC. Although last year was a quiet one for us re: events, we have managed to continue to help women seeking access clitoral restoration surgery in Melbourne with Mansoor Mirkazemi. Our fundraising was limited due to the lockdown, but just before the lockdown in February, Paula Ferrari performed at the premiere of a wonderful documentary exploring... women's (and a trans man's) relationship with their clitoris called "Me and Her". This was a wonderful film celebrating female (and one male's) sexuality and the importance of the clitoris. The filmmaker, Vicky Jay generously donated the proceeds of the raffle on the night to FGM Restoration. We are small but we are passionate and we are committed to seeking justice and especially appropriate health care for all women in Australia who are living with the effects of female genital mutilation.
