22.01.2022 Thought this was interesting and why you need to get your advice from qualified nutritional professionals and not social media (unless its my facebook page or website LOL). I have commented on my website blogs re evidence based articles.

19.01.2022 September gathering talk overview. Nutritionist Julie Berrisford-Hooper will be presenting a talk titled "Recognising the Signs of Disordered Eating Patterns". ...You have heard of an eating disorder e.g. Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa but how does disordered eating differ? Can disordered eating become an eating disorder? What are the subtle and less subtle signs when consuming or not consuming food is not "normal" behaviour? What are Orthorexia Nervosa, Anorexia Athletica and more.... For details on Where and When, please see previous post.

18.01.2022 This is a helpful article as many are suffering from "working from home" neck! I am also finding my lower back aches if I spend too long sitting and forgetting to stretch/move.

16.01.2022 Nutritionist Julie Berrisford-Hooper of Flynness Healthcare presented an informative talk at the Gathering last night giving an insight into sub clinical eatin...g disorders and signs of disordered eating patterns. She covered some main disorders seen in our society and in our clinical settings. These included Orthorexia Nervosa, Bigorexia, also known as Anorexia Athletica & Reverse Anorexia, Night Eating Syndrome and how BDD/Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Self esteem affect, and are affected by, these conditions. An interesting Q&A during and after the talk added to the knowledge for practitioners and others in attendance. See more

16.01.2022 How are you going with your home food safety? You may have stocked up with food stuffs over the passed months and whilst most non perishables, tinned and frozen foods will be fine, don't forget to check Use by Dates (quality affected and can be dangerous to consume) and Best Before Dates (nutritional quality may be affected but safe to eat) on foods that are in your pantry and fridge. Although COVID-19 and other SARS related viruses originated as a result of unsafe food pra...ctices, to date, food is one of the few ways in which COVID-19 has not been spread elsewhere. However, the main risk is still bacterial contamination, followed by pests, which when consumed can, and will, cause illness and potential death. If you are back in lockdown or still in cleaning mode, have a look at your stock this week. I have just completed a Health & Safety Food course so my focus for this week's post is food safety. Stay safe, eat well, stay alert! See more

14.01.2022 I don't know about having COVID brain but I am certainly COVID drained! This is an interesting article as psychologists are reporting increased depression and anxiety over the COVID virus and extended periods of lockdown. The uncertainty of how long? So how are you going? What are you doing to be proactive with dealing with the current "new norm"? Ask for help, plenty of healthcare professionals who are able to help as well as family and friends. Don't be alone.... Although I really missed consulting face to face, I found plenty to do during the time WA was in tighter control with our regional borders closed, caught up on Professional Development, updated Website and Facebook page, tidied office and those drawers with all the "I might use those some day..." articles etc,. preparing Power Point Presentations for talks which I had started pre March and knew that some day, they would be given (1 has been given and 2 to go next Saturday at the HHN Expo), read, watched all those SBS documentaries I now had time to watch, and I rediscovered knitting and crochet!

14.01.2022 This week’s Weekender spread

13.01.2022 COVID-19 Vaccine? Is it possible? yes; When ? million dollar question, good trials take time and it won’t be available to everyone immediately. With viruses and vaccines, difficulties arise due to a virus’s ability to mutate and hide in cells. COVID-19 is part of the cold family and as you know, still waiting for a cure for the common cold! Like the flu vaccine, if a vaccine for COVID-19 becomes available, it will most likely be one that will need repeating yearl...y/re-emergence etc., rather than a one off. Recent vaccine research here in Australia has been focussing on Cell mediated immunity. If this can be developed it will be able to attack the virus on a deeper, cellular level over riding the ability to hide. We have 3 levels of defence 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Cell mediated is level 3. Our 1st and 2nd line are non specific- 1st level - our skin, mucous membranes, coughing and sneezing, 2nd level- fevers, inflammation, phagocytosis; Our 3rd level is specific, 2 divisions Antibody -mediated immunity development of antibodies in response to infection before it enters the cells (B-lymphocytes/B-cells), and Cell-mediated immunity development of cells (T-lymphocytes/T-cells) in response to infection when it has entered the cells. In the meantime, you need to keep up your cleanliness-soap and hot water, remember social distancing 2m/6’ and masks (but don’t become complacent with these). Support your immune system with good nutrition, exercise, sleep and Homeopathy (for more on homeopathy, see www.elementsofhealth.com.au). Being considerate of all has been shown effective. Do as your told!!! Obedience is not that hard when safety is at stake.. Take care, stay safe

13.01.2022 Seniors Week November 9-15, 2020. This is a useful basic guide video for all but focus on seniors. For specific Australian Guidelines, visit https://nutritionaustralia.org/.../nutrition-and-older...; Australian Government Department of Health www.health.gov.au.

12.01.2022 Salty, sweet, sour, bitter, umami... um, what is umami? This a question we've heard before. Umami (OO-MAH-MEE) is described as tasting savoury or meaty obtaine...d from the glutamate (a type of amino acid) in umami foods. Some examples of umami foods include tomato, broth, mushrooms, miso or meat. Umami flavours enhance the overall taste of a dish, and so can be a great alternative to salt! Research has shown umami foods such as miso, mushrooms or onions are effective in reducing the amount of salt needed in cooking. #umami #umamifoods #NutritionAustralia #nutrition #healthyeating #australian

11.01.2022 ...unless you really really enjoy preparing and cooking, basic is fine. Restaurant style? I'll go to a restaurant and pay...they can do the washing up

09.01.2022 Did you know 5.4 million cases of foodborne illness occur each year in Australia? This equates to 1 in 5 Australians who have experienced ill health as a resul...t of consuming food that has been cooked, handled, or stored incorrectly. To make sure you're preparing, cooking and storing your food correctly, make sure to follow the 3 food safety principles: Keep it clean - surfaces, equipment, utensils and hands cleaned and free from dirt and germs. Cook it well: ensure your food is thoroughly cooked to the required temperature. temperatures will differ depending on what you're cooking! Store it safe: keep raw meats and high risk foods separate, refrigerate or freeze promptly and ensure to discard food after the safe time for consumption has passed. For more information, Nutrition Australia NSW have written up an easy to understand food safety article for you. 04.01.2022 This a reasonably well balanced article on "gut health". I agree that it is overall food intake, especially fibre, soluble and insoluble, from grains, fruit and vegetables, that assist in promoting beneficial bacteria and keeping the colon walls clean, aid in having at least a daily poop! For some, specific foods, and even food groups, may cause problems with gut health and need to be addressed and other sources to provide nutrients added back. Remember that food consumption should not be a "trend" or "fad". Do some research, ask a professional in this area questions, before jumping on the bandwagon.

03.01.2022 I have posted some new blogs on my website. Whether or not you have been told NOT to diet...we know as professionals that you are going to! So I believe it is better to guide you rather than ban you! The overall "theme" of these new blogs relates to weight loss/weight maintenance and how the body functions in relation to food, exercise (movement) and your individual makeup. The latest eating plan - "fad" or "evidence based? Where do B vitamins & Chromium fit in with weigh...t? How is Jane Austen relevant to today's 16:8 plan? What type of exercise should you be doing at the gym? Have you heard of the Ayurvedic food plan? Lastly..what does "diata" mean??? (I have rearranged the pages and have placed introductions at the top of each section, so you will need to scroll down to new information or information you have yet to read). Enjoy food, enjoy exercise and enjoy life - be grateful for the things you have.. See more

02.01.2022 With Aussies spending more time at home this year, our lifestyles are changing in a way that can have a lasting impact on our bone health. This week (17 23 Au...gust) is Healthy Bones Action Week, and we’re supporting the initiative by calling on all Australians to integrate 3 simple steps to build and maintain strong and healthy bones - eating calcium-rich foods, like dairy; doing regular weight-bearing exercise; and enjoying safe levels of sunshine for Vitamin D. Learn more about Healthy Bones Action Week and the importance of bone health at https://buff.ly/2PXQHkv #HealthyBonesActionWeek Australian Dairy

02.01.2022 Do you have Indigenous seasons in your area? The answer of course, is yes! In the south west of WA we could say we are in the European season of autumn, however, more accurately with regard to temperatures and other weather patterns, all of which affect food, we should say that we are heading into Bjeran as we are in Nyoongar territory. Australia, as with all continents, has many varied temperatures, indigenous plants and animals used for food and medicine. So, when you next think of eating 'seasonally", which season are you choosing? Reference Australian Govt Bureau of Meterology.

01.01.2022 useful information from the Australian Government Dietary recommendations. See healthcare provider for individual needs especially regarding medical conditions.
