22.01.2022 Northam Craft Supplies has been a wonderful supporter of Fibres West events over the years, and an inspiring place for all things textiles in the greater Northam region. Sadly the shop is closing down as the proprietor (Wendy Miller) is branching in a new direction in her career. Last day of trading is December 24 and EVERYTHING is 30% off. Lots of bargains to be had, for sure. Northam Craft Centre... 202 Fitzgerald Street Northam WA 6401 Ph: 08 9621 1288 We wish Wendy well, and thank her for her support and her expertise in all things textiles. Her shop will be missed!

20.01.2022 Excitement continues to build in the West - only one more sleep until bookings open for our 2021 Fibres West event. www.fibreswest.com.au We are also very excited that Sharon Peoples (ACT) is one of our 10 outstanding tutors! ... Her workshop Conscious Creativity: Design for Stitch is designed for a broad range of participants: from those experienced in stitch and wanting to delve into a more conscious way of working, to participants who don’t see themselves as ‘embroiderers’ as such but want to use stitch to enhance their work. Sharon writes: "There are three responses to looking at art yes, no and WOW! WOW is the one we aim for in this class by using efficient, less wasteful ways to consciously achieve our visions. While it is not a making workshop, making is central. Discussion of stitch will include many techniques that use needles: including knitting, needle lace and machine embroidered lace. The workshop examines what is design, the design process and design as a problem-solving activity, giving students the skills to build a framework for planning, designing and constructing stitched work. Students will be guided to develop a deep understanding of design through both practical and ‘design thinking’ exercises. They will come to understand where design and stitch fit into the broader artmaking, and come away with a portfolio of design work ready to be stitched for the next year." Sharon has worked as an artist in Canberra for over 20 years, exhibiting nationally and internationally as well as taking on commissioned work. Her work has been collected by many national and state institutions. She holds a Master’s degree and Ph.D. from the Australian National University and has taught as a guest lecturer in the Textiles workshop at Australian National University. Her art practice focuses on textiles, both hand and machine embroidery. 08.01.2022 We trust that many of you have set your alarm for 6pm (WA time) tomorrow - which is the moment bookings open for Fibres West 2021, through our website www.fibreswest.com.au Our 2019 event was close to a sellout within the first 4 days of bookings going 'live'. If you are new to our event, Fibres West 2021 is a wonderfully immersive residential programme that runs July 4-10 next year, at Muresk Institute near Northam. The enrolment fee covers the cost of a 5-day workshop wit...h a tutor of your choice, single room accommodation (share bathroom), all meals and fabulous company! Class sizes are small and you will undertake a detailed exploration of your chosen activity for the entire week. Over the past week we've highlighted our fabulous tutors, and among them is Julie Ryder who will join us from Canberra. In her workshop "Natural Dye and Mordant Printing" participants will discover the magic of printing with mordants in conjunction with a range of natural dyes. The mordant printing process has been specifically targeted towards the colouration of cellulose fibres and fabrics - cotton, linen, hemp, rayon, ramie etc. Many natural dyers find the cellulose fibres hardest to achieve strong colour, and this workshop will enable you to work with these fibres with confidence. This workshop is suitable for those wishing to extend beyond immersion dyeing to printing. It is suitable for all levels, from relative beginners to the very experienced, as participants can determine how to incorporate the Mordant Printing methods in their own practice. Julie Ryder is a textile designer who has gained international recognition for her work. Originally trained in science, she retrained as a textile designer in 1990, and completed an MA in Visual Arts (Textiles) from the ANU in 2004. She has been working with natural dyes in specific locations for many years to make textiles that reflect the terroir and culture of the land, which is something which every natural dyer is interested in.
