20.01.2022 This is a preview of progress on the Thornycroft with firewall already rebuilt by Scott, including use of oiled Rosewood, rivetted panels (with hot solid rivets) and black-smithed frame. More photos will be published in the Thornycroft album in weeks to come.
18.01.2022 Max, the owner of this marvellous 1978 Aston Martin V8 ‘Oscar India’, asked us to fit and recess into the front grille new driving lights he also provided. (Oscar India is from the phonetic alphabet and relates to ‘October Introduction’.) Obviously, the fitting of driving lights is a relatively simple activity. The photos and the following summary illustrates the background effort to professionally do the task on a classic vehicle . The activities were undertaken by Stuart (...panel shop), Brandon (paint shop), Don and Steve (auto electrical and assembly). Removed front lower valance and bumper to access grille mounts. Drilled new holes and cut and filed upper lip to allow for fitment of lights, found grille opening is 6mm different side to side. Sectioned part of the lights to fit opening in car. Test fitted lenses and trial fitted to vehicle. Fabricated, sand-blasted and painted new driving light brackets. Placed lights into required position and welded bracket onto car. Refitted and checked grille to cut holes into the correct position in grille. Made template to locate holes for lights, transferred onto grille. Cut grille and trial fitted for correct alignment. Removed grille and filed edges. Removed lights and dismantled parts for paint shop. Mixed and colour-matched paint to car. Painted the grille opening, raw new holes, grille panel and old stone chips on front of car. Remove fuse box panel and box. Ran wiring to switch in centre console. The 40-year-old switches were found to be broken and had to be repaired and put back together. Discretely ran wiring in new conduit along inner guard to lights. Fitted relay and wire up switch Refitted valance and bumper. Refitted and checked all other parts removed. Adjusted and centred lights. Removed battery and found terminal lead was shorting. Vacuumed away battery acid powder from the general boot area. Remove earth lead and switch. Remove existing terminal from earth lead. Soldered new eye-terminal to lead. Resolder existing eye terminal. Cover with heat shrink. Fitted new battery, refitted the repaired earth lead and switch. Clean and valet, and return to owner.
18.01.2022 This Morgan Plus 8, imported from the UK by its Victorian owner, is at Finch for a major body-off restoration and mechanical upgrades. Fewer than twenty of these +8 Super Lights, with aluminium bodies, were built by Morgan. Kim rebuilt the timber-frame which had been affected by wood rot. An extensive mock-up of mechanical systems was undertaken next, including exhaust, and Colin trimmed and adjusted the guards and bonnets. The objective of this stage is to complete the hotwork (welding and cutting) before the chassis and panels are sent to the Paint Shop.

11.01.2022 For a brief 18 months only, Chrysler Australia added the Drifter panel van to their Chrysler CL Valiant range in Autumn of 1977. The Drifter was a classic of the 1970s, and competed head-on with Holden's Sandman. This album shows the wonderful and valiant effort (pardon the pun) by Stuart, in meticulously reinstating the body of this fabulous Classic.

11.01.2022 Hello all, *** UPDATED: 5:00pm 20 November 2020 *** This afternoon, the Government of South Australia (GSA) announced the lifting of the community COVID-19 lockdown from 12:01 am on Sunday, 22 November 2020.... This means that the Finch Restorations' workshops will reopen from Monday 23 November 2020. To comply with the new regulations, we will be limiting the number of people in our main workshops to 100, and not permit any vertical consumption nor dancing by staff and visitors. (While this is tongue-in-cheek, we do respect the regulations. We are just pleased that the lockdown has been lifted so quickly!) The Finch Powerhouse has remained open through the lockdown. A revised notice from the GSA on 19 November 2020 declared employees of 'vehicle repair and mechanical services' as "essential workers". At the Finch Powerhouse we have many customers dependant on their carburetted cars. There are also many other mechanical workshops in the Adelaide Hills and on the Adelaide Plains, that subcontract us to repair/service carburettors and distributors, and undertake many other advanced and tricky problems for them. If you have found yourself mulling over your old automotive project in your shed during the lockdown period and wish to contact us, please use email rather than phone or social media. We will be pleased to receive enquiries and project photos at our email address: [email protected] We wish our South Australian and Adelaide Hills communities all the best during these unusual times, and look forward to seeing you on the other side of the lockdown. Take care and stay safe! All the best from the Finch Restorations and Finch Powerhouse team.

08.01.2022 This exquisite 1995 Morgan Plus 8 was one of many performance vehicles tuned at the Powerhouse this week.
07.01.2022 This lovely Escort Van is an heirloom vehicle for a mother and daughter in Victoria. The green van was a well known 'identity' driven around their local town by their late husband/father. The logo images in this album separate some of the stages in the restoration process: 1. Between the first two logo images are photos showing the Escort van upon arrival and during disassembly.... 2. Bookended by the next pair of logo images are photos of the paint removal stage. 3. The next group of photos show preliminary work on gutters and floor pans. 4. The latest extensive set of photos show the rust repairs and rejuvenation of the front end of the van. There will be more photos to follow of this van's restoration in the future.

04.01.2022 This wonderful 1960 Morris J-Type Van is undergoing a significant restoration dealing with considerable rust. The chassis and driveline have been practically completed. In the last set of images posted, Graham was enjoying the satisfaction from assembling the doors along with their tracks and hinges, and making them all operational. Colin and Mark were progressing the initial stages of preparing panels for priming and painting. The next phase of photos show additional leadwork, the making and trial-fitting of timbers for floors, further body preparation and the first stages of applying colour - to the doors and to the guards.
03.01.2022 We seek a passionate, experienced and qualified Mechanic to join our team to repair, restore and/or maintain mechanical and electrical systems of classic, prestige and vintage vehicles of 30-120 years of age.
03.01.2022 This special Dodge racer was on the dyno at our Woodside workshop this week. Great results from Richard's efforts.
02.01.2022 ** EDIT: this post is a remnant of an upload to a Facebook album that 'broke'. Please see the full album itself https://www.facebook.com/media/set/ ** For a brief 18 months only, Chrysler Australia added the Drifter panel van to their Chrysler CL Valiant range from Autumn of 1977. The Drifter was a classic of the 1970s, and competed head-on with Holden's Sandman.... The album shows the wonderful and valiant effort (pardon the pun) by Stuart, in meticulously reinstating the body of this fabulous Classic. Refering to the photos visible in the whole album (not to sub-sets of photos seen in various individual posts to the album), the two dozen images book-ended by the Finch logos show the van's body as it arrived at our workshops. After the second logo, the progress by Stuart is captured.
02.01.2022 Back in 2018, local photographer Peter Knights (@peter.knights.9) captured these images of our Wooodside workshop which we were using as vehicle storage at the time. This was before we started establishing the servicing-dyno-distributor-carburettor shop there. Peter's photos capture a somewhat haunting aspect of the Art of the Automobile and it is delightful to see our world as interpreted through someone elses' lense.
02.01.2022 We seek a passionate, experienced and qualified Panel Beater to join our Panelshop team to repair the rust and 'battle damage' accumulated on vehicles of 30-120 years of age.
