19.01.2022 Well what a great day to celebrate a birthday. A big HAPPY 5th BIRTHDAY to our gorgeous girl REENIE!!! The sun has been shining and a light breeze ......beautiful! We had the Collective on today but this arvo we have had a lot of fun, runs and some special food (Pak Choy!!) And lots and lots of pats! 18.01.2022 Know your farmer, know their farming. Here's the magnificent Finmaw Farm: How do you organically deal with slugs and other pest infestation in your market garde...n? In the past we have used ducks for snails and slugs but have had to keep an eye on out that they don’t help themselves to the veggies! When it’s been really wet, slugs and snails can be prolific and we have found the certified organic iron pellets effective although we only use these occasionally when plants are really suffering. In the past we have used beer traps, Diatomaceous Earth (DE) and copper barriers for various pest infestations. We don’t use sprays, not even organic ones. We now grow flowers to attract beneficial insects and use fine netting as a preventative. We aim for healthy soil to grow strong healthy plants that are not stressed and this creates an environment that is not as attractive to pests. In unhealthy plants there can be a nutrient imbalance which attracts pests. How many varieties of vegetables do you produce? We grow around 35-40 different varieties of veggies throughout a year. What new projects or activities are happening on your farm? We have recently built a 5 x 30m greenhouse and looking forward we are planning to build another during the winter months. We also now have a caterpillar tunnel that can be moved around the market garden. These both can be opened so that bees, fresh air etc can enter which is great. They help by extending our growing season. An example of this is that we have just harvested our first crop of zucchinis from the greenhouse. This is about 6 weeks earlier than from those grown outdoors which is fantastic! Looking forward to early tomatoes....fingers crossed! 14.01.2022 Winter has brought us cold wet days this year and our veggies have been growing very slowly. So we’ve been busy building our greenhouse and getting things ready for our spring plantings. Hoping this year we can extend our seasons and provide lots of delicious fresh tomatoes, capsicum, cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant etc for a longer period. Thanks to Hortitech-Monbulk Rural Enterprises for advice and supplies .....great service.

14.01.2022 It’s always at this point in the year, that we look back over the road we have just travelled and realise how very fortunate we are to have made friendships with so many like minded people and be supported by wonderful customers. In such terrible times it’s a great feeling! We love to grow and provide healthy organic food ...paddock to plate...and it’s only possible through community support. Thank you to those who support our small family farm now and in the future, it’s ve...ry much appreciated. We also love our dogs and providing much loved family pets. Thank you to all in our puppy family for giving beautiful homes and lives to these precious fur babies and for sharing their lives with us, it’s wonderful. It’s also at this time that we love to wish everyone a Merry Christmas, Happy Holiday season....and hope that the New Year brings hope to everyone after the year that 2020 has been. 10.01.2022 Yesterday was a lovely calm day and we planted some of our seedlings in our greenhouse with the paper pot transplanter from ActiveVista. Today it was soooo windy that we thought the newly built greenhouse might blow away! So far we have been really lucky but all our fingers are crossed. Our little seedlings wouldn’t survive the outdoors here at the moment.
