20.01.2022 Never leave children or pets alone in a car With the forcasted high temperatures in the coming week you need to be mindful of the conditions that can occur in a... car. On a typical Australian summer day, the temperature inside a parked car can be more than double the temperature outside. That means that on a 30C day, the temperature inside the car can reach over 60C! A child or pet left in a parked car under those conditions for even a few minutes can very quickly become distressed, dehydrated and can die from organ failure. 75% of the temperature increase occurs within five minutes of closing the car Darker-coloured cars can reach slightly higher temperatures than lighter-coloured cars Large cars can heat up just as fast as small cars The colour of interior trim has little effect on the speed that the temperature can increase inside a car Having the windows down 5cm causes only a slight decrease in temperature with an outside temperature of around 30C What are the risks? -The temperature and humidity inside the car begin to increase while the airflow decreases -As the temperature increases inside the car, the child or pet can begin to develop heat stress and start to dehydrate -Young children are more sensitive to heat than older children and adults. This can put them at greater risk of heat stroke and other health risks More info https://www.mynrma.com.au//what-to-do-if-you-see-a-child-l #frnsw #preparedforanything #ProtectTheIrreplaceable

20.01.2022 Incident Call: At 5.30am today, P105 was responded to assist our mates from 342 Kandos (who had been at the site since 2am) with an overturned semi trailer on t...he Castlereagh Highway, Running Streem. A truck carrying 20 tonnes of steel had rolled whilst negotiating a bend. As a result 600 litres of diesel had ruptured and spilled in a 300m area. Quick work by 342 Crews, prevented the diesel entering nearby waterways. Over the next 6 hours, 120 bags of absorbent (provided by local council) was used to clean up the spill, and the truck and trailer righted for removal. Also in attendance was RV312 (Gulgong), police, RFS, council and RMS. Great work by all crews. P105 returned to station around 12.30pm. See more

19.01.2022 As the temperatures drop and we get closer to winter we see an increase in residential house fire and house fire related deaths. Today our Fire Investigation an...d Research team showed us just how easy it is for a fire to start in your home when a heater is left unattended. Remember always to keep furniture and blankets at least one meter from the heater, and not to overload powerboard as we head into the winter months. For information on how to prepare your home for winter visit www.fire.nsw.gov.au/winter #PreparedForAnything #FRNSW #ProtectTheIrreplaceable

19.01.2022 A VERY HIGH fire danger rating has been issued for the Mid-Western Regional Council area tomorrow, Saturday 28 November. This also means all permits are suspend...ed from midnight tonight. The weather this weekend is going to be hot and windy, do not be a risk to yourself, your neighbours or your community by lighting a fire tomorrow. 19.01.2022 Keep looking when Cooking Yesterday afternoon we were called with Fire and Rescue NSW Station 312 Gulgong to reports of a house fire with a smoke alarm so...unding and smoke issuing from a house in Mudgee. Upon our arrival we were met by the residents of the premises who had just returned home after quickly heading to the shops. They had left the roast on the stove cooking with a misunderstanding of who was looking after it that led to our call. Thankfully they had a working smoke alarm which alerted neighbours who were able to call 000 which prevented a more serious outcome. Remember smoke alarms do save lives and in this case homes. We cant stress how important it is to keep looking while you are cooking each and every time. If you cant stay within a couple of steps turn it off until you can. #KeepLookingWhenCooking #FRNSW #firefighters #smokealarms #homefiresafety

16.01.2022 Take care with your cold ashes By Trevor Lang Retained Firefighter 495 Station Wentworth Falls During the cooler winter months, many Blue Mountains resident...s use wood-fired combustion heaters to warm their homes. A cosy fire in the living room provides economical heating and the homely aroma of wood smoke but combustion heaters require cleaning out periodically, and therein lies a significant risk. During periods of cold weather, Fire Stations in the Mountains have been called to numerous fire emergencies caused by hot ashes cleared out of combustion stoves and heaters. Fire fighters have attended countless such incidents over the years. Many have resulted in major damage to houses, while others have had less catastrophic consequences but were still traumatic for the residents (and their neighbours). What commonly occurs is that someone will clear the cold ashes from their heater into a plastic bag or a bin, and place them outside often on a timber patio or deck, or near the woodpile, or even in a garden area, a spokesman from Fire + Rescue NSW explained. In many cases the ashes are not in fact completely cold. Outside the confines of the heater, exposed to oxygen, they can (and often do) reignite. Sometimes that re-ignition occurs after many hours at night, or when people are away from home. If the warm ashes are in a plastic container and they do reignite, the container will melt. The fire can quickly spread and cause enormous damage. When clearing ashes from your heater, its a good idea to place them in a metal bucket, the spokesman continued. Take the bucket to a clear area in your yard and fill it with water; then leave it for a day or two to make absolutely sure that theres no chance whatsoever of the contents catching alight. Never place ashes on verandahs, decks or balconies, or in bushland; and always wet the ashes thoroughly. This simple precaution could avoid embarrassment or even disaster. Take care with fires throughout the year they can be a welcome friend or a vicious foe. If a fire emergency does occur at your home (or a neighbours home) for any reason, always call 000.

15.01.2022 Our thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues. RIP

15.01.2022 Our firefighters from across Region West have banded together to raise money to support the Jordan family by selling beanies in the lead up to the colder months. Bridie is the daughter of Damien Jordan, Deputy Captain at Fire and Rescue NSW Gilgandra 300 Station. Bridie was born with Sagittal Craniosynostosis. Her sagittal suture in her skull was fused at birth, preventing her head from growing width ways. This condition comes with a whole series of medical complications, and... shes currently undergoing extensive treatment in Sydney, hundreds of kilometres from home. This fundraiser has been set up by firefighters in Team Region West Area Command FRNSW, and is designed to help support the family, who have been forced to live away from home during Bridies treatment. In 2018, Damien Jordan was the highest individual fundraiser in the Firies Climb for Motor Neurone Disease. Its time for us to support Damien and his family during their time of need. 15.01.2022 Tonight Kandos 342 station was lucky enough to have a visit from the BA semi-trailer 2 that conducts SCBA Self Contained Breathing Apparatus training for retained and permanent stations all over NSW. The training involves the use of SCBA and lets firefighters practice search and rescue operations in a smoke filled training environment rescuing casualties in a house fire scenario. A big shout out to Josh from BA/ Hazmat training for a great night.

14.01.2022 Have you ever wanted to see exactly what its like to fight a fire first hand? Well, thanks to Fire and Rescue NSW Station 83 Riverstone you can. Riverstone Fir...e Station were called to a kitchen fire on Wednesday, 9 September after a pot of oil caught alight. The kitchen was extensively damaged, however the owners of the home escaped with only minor injuries. Check out the below video to see a kitchen fire through the eyes of a firefighter. Kitchen fires are the leading cause of house fires in NSW and a hot oil fire can engulf a room in a matter of minutes. Never attempt to put out an oil fire using water. Use a fire blanket only if it is safe to do so. Act quickly. Get out. Stay Out. Call Triple Zero (000) and wait for firefighters to attend. You can prevent a kitchen fire from happening by never leaving cooking unattended. #PreparedForAnything #MoreThanFire

14.01.2022 Just after 1800hrs this evening, Pump 312 Gulgong was responded to reports of a house fire in Mayne Street in Gulgong. Backed up by Rehab 312 and Pump 387 Mudge...e, crews made entry into the home, finding the cause of the fire to be the chimney from the familys fireplace, and were able to stop the fire spreading within the roof space. Thankfully, for the owners, only minimal damage was done to the house, and theyll be able to return to the house this evening after everything gets checked out by a licensed electrician. Stay safe, stay warm, and make sure to clean your chimney! 11.01.2022 Yesterday we posted about our fundraising initiative, Beanies for Bridie. The initiative was set up by Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters to raise money for Bridie Jordan. This evening, weve added kids beanies to the line up. Bridie is the daughter of Damien Jordan, Deputy Captain at Fire and Rescue NSW Gilgandra 300 Station. Bridie suffers from Mainzer Saldino Syndrome, a rare genetic syndrome only diagnosed in around 20 others internationally. It effects bone growth and org...ans in the body. As a result of this, Bridies kidneys are failing, and shes currently undergoing extensive treatment in Sydney, hundreds of kilometres from home. In 2018, Damien Jordan was the second highest individual fundraiser in the Firies Climb for Motor Neurone Disease. Its time for us to support Damien and his family during their time of need. 11.01.2022 September 11 marks a very sad day in U.S. and international history. 10.01.2022 TOTAL FIRE BAN TOMORROW There has been a Total Fire Ban declared for tomorrow Tuesday 1/12/2020 with a very high fire danger rating! But what does this actually mean? There is always a little bit of confusion around what we can and can’t do around Total Fire Bans. When a Total Fire Ban (TOBAN) is declared This means as the public we must;... Have NO fires in the open for cooking or camping. NO Welding or grinding to be conducted outdoors, NO barbecues using solid fuel such as wood, charcoal or heat beads. NO lighting fires in the open. Farmers should reconsider any tractor work/slashing on their properties. We can still have gas and electric BBQs as long as it is controlled by an adult and a continuous water source is nearby (e.g garden hose). If you see a fire please report it to 000 Immediately! #preparedforanything #FRNSW #ProtectTheIrreplaceable

09.01.2022 The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast heat wave conditions to affect much of NSW until at least next Tuesday. This will increase the fire risk across much of state with Very High and Severe fire danger likely on the weekend. Plan and prepare now.

08.01.2022 Grass fires are unpredictable. They can start easily and spread quickly. In fact, grass fires can move three times faster than a bush fire, leaving you little time to get ready. Grass fires on farms can also destroy homes, crops and livelihoods.... There is an increased risk of grass fires this summer. It is important that you understand grass fires and how to protect yourself, your family and your property from the threat of fire. Even if you do not live near grassland, you may still be at risk of bush fire. You don't have to live right near the bush to be at risk. Even if your home is a few streets back, you may be at risk. Check if you live on bush fire prone land.

06.01.2022 After a week-long string of daily solar panel fires, Fire and Rescue NSW are urging the public to ensure that solar panel systems are maintained and installed b...y licensed, qualified tradespeople and comply with Australian standards. FRNSWs Fire Research and Investigation Unit visited homes across NSW this week to establish the cause of house fires and have determined that many solar panel fires are caused by faulty inverter and isolation switches, and installation that is not in line with Australian standards. Superintendent Graham Kingsland from the Fire Investigation and Research Unit stressed the importance of taking steps to ensure solar panels were as safe as possible. Over the last five years we have seen solar panel related fires increase five-fold. It is not uncommon to see solar panels cause house and building fires" By ensuring solar panels are installed by a licensed installer, and are well maintained by a professional, you can prevent a tragedy he said. It is essential that home owners check the validity of the licence of any tradespeople with NSW Fair Trading, before any work takes place on your home. For more information on solar panel safety, visit the Fair Trading website: https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au//during-th/solar-panels Images courtesy of Michael Forbes, Team Leader Investigation, FIRU.
